TGIF 9-14-07 it's beginning to feel like fall:)

Boy is it chilly this morning, at 7:00 this morning it is 40 degrees. I had opened up the windows last night and it was 60 in the house. I even broke down and fired up the furnace this morning to see if it works and warm it up a bit.

It is homecoming week so will go up to the pep rally this afternoon and then volleyball, football and the crowning ceremony tonight. Feels like we are still in high school besides having 3 kids and even though it has been 15 years since I was a senior in high school.

This chilly weather makes me want to make an apple crisp:) I need to finish canning green beans, I have 16 quarts done and enough beans for 9 more quarts. Also have some cukes to make into dill pickles. Haven't done as much canning this year but don't have the energy.

Rhiannon has snacks on Monday and we are bringing grape tomatoes, peppers, cukes, carrots and celery and dip for snacks. We will have to see how the kids like them, but it is Rhiannon's favorite snack. We will make lots of snacks to watch the big NE vs USC football game tomorrow night. Some of the teachers are coming over to watch with us and have a few beers.

There's a fall chill in the air here but the weekend looks good.
Stacie, it sounds like you have a busy weekend ahead. Have fun!

No working for me this weekend....:)) No plans yet either. I may try to convince Kim we need to go to the Mall tomorrow and have dinner out. I haven't even looked at any fall clothes yet....or shoes!

Where the H@ll did summer go?

I'll be **clinking** right around 5pm when Kim gets home.

Lots to do and nothing planned - both of you sound like you've got a great weekend ahead. I love unplanned weekends, but busy weekends are satisfying, too.

We've had a bit of a cool down here, but everyone was excited that it got down to the sixties for the first time in months. It actually has been one of the coolest summers I remember ever having since I've lived in north Texas, but it still is nice for those cooler fall temps to arrive.

I have way too much planned for this weekend. Last weekend was devoted to helping my sister pack up to move to Arkansas, so this week I've got 2 weekends worth of work to accomplish. I need to get my fall veggies in, and I need to clean house. As nice as it's supposed to be this weekend, I'm thinking the house is going to stay dirty. :-)

Also, you might consider Chamblee's Roses. They are shipped in gallon pots and are more mature than roses of many own-root vendors. Chamblee's selection is not as extensive as some, but they do have nice roses. Another vendor with larger own-root plants is High Country Roses, though their selection is aimed at colder climates. Still, you might find some you like there; I have. Amity Heritage Roses used to sell the largest own-root bands around, just gorgeous plants, but I don't think they are currently active. It didn't look like it to me when I last visited their website. Probably there are others, but I'm only mentioning ones I have purchased from myself. My personal favorite vendor is Vintage, and I buy the majority of my roses there, but you do have to mature them in a gallon pot yourself. Rosefolly

Next to gardening, reading is my favorite thing to do. I read mostly non-fiction. This past summer I was reading about cooking, eating, and our food supply. I started with Ruth Reichl. She writes in sort of an autobiographal fashion from starting out working in restaurants ,to becoming the food critic for the New York Times, and then on to being editor of Gourmet magazine. I ended by reading Animal, Vegetable, Mineral by Barbara Kingsolver. This fall I read about Blackwater because I didn't know anything about it. That got me interested in reading books about the war in Iraq. From there I started reading history books about the period from World War 2 to the present. I particularly liked reading Arthur Schlesinger's books because he seems careful of his facts and also was present for much of the history he writes about. My sister reads mysteries and her all time favorite is Agatha Christie. She loves the series by Janet Evanovich. She even got me reading the Southern Sisters mystery series by Ann George. They are set in Birmingham Alabama and are quite funny. My personal favorite fiction is the Mitford series by Jan Karon. A little mystery, a little romance.... We just subscribed to Net Flixs so we will be watching movies for awhile. We watched Good Night and Good Luck last night as well as a documentary called God Has Forgotten Us. It was about some young men who'd spent ten years in refugee camps in northern africa and then they were brought to the United States. It showed their reactions to our fleniful food, electricity, and running water. It was very sad to watch as they were so homesick for their family and friends here in the midst of plentiful material things. I also enjoy Book TV on the weekends. I learn a lot there and get ideas for more must reads. We just got a gas wall furnace installed in our basement family room. Now we will have a source of heat if the electricity goes off. We hope we won't need it but I haven't forgotten the bone chilling cold from last years ice storms and want to be prepared.

Good morning from waiting SE Texas! It's 82 and mostly cloudy so far. It took forever for me to fall into a good sleep last night, so I slept in late. Woke up to hearing hubby outside the bedroom window running tape on them. Coffee and computer, then breathing treatment, then getting dressed for whatever this day may bring! I received the most comforting prayer from a 'net friend when I got up today. It just relaxed me to my toes when I read it. Isn't it strange that we each possess the ability to alter another person's way of feeling by a few chosen words? Dee, TGIF! What did you think of BB last night? All regular shows were pre-empted here for weather news, of course, but I stayed up to watch the beginning of BBAD and figured out very quickly that somebody left (YEA!) and my faves stayed. THank goodness for modern technology so that I can keep up when need be. It looks like Ike made another little change during the night and he's not weakening as I'd heard before bedtime. We're in as good a shape as we can be, so I'm confident that we'll be safe. Yes, I wish we had plywood on the windows, but we don't - this time! We have plenty of food, water, cooking methods (propane grill and Coleman stove), flashlights, fresh batteries, candles and matches, and I can't think what else right now. It's having so much time to prepare that's a blessing and a curse though. I keep thinking we're ready, then I think of something else to be done. If and when we lose power, know that I'm here in spirit because y'all are very special to me. Post interesting things so that when I do check in, I'll have good things to read! Have a great weekend!

TGIF for sure!! I've been on the road all week and I'm glad to be home FINALLY!! Stacie, hot as heck here too...but I LOVE summer so the heat doesn't bother me at all. I'll take it over winter and cold temps.....yuck. Linda, I know for sure you will have a great time with the girls....I still remember when I finally figured out your forum name. Katie, congrats to beating the big "C" pal! I'm still shocked at how you pulled that off at camp last year. I still love you stemless glass tip! Pat, I missed the culinary school thing. Too cool! I'd love to read your blog or at least follow up here on the forum. What a trooper you are with all you've been through the last couple of years. Lindac, I'm thinking you will be there reguardless....I know you love those Grandkids of yours. Stay cool whatever you decide. No fall nip in the air today. It's overcast and going up to 80.

Stacy -- Homecoming sounds like fun. My high school never did that.

Nancy-- enjoy doing nothing. I need fall shoes, too. I'm still wearing sandals but I won't be able to do that much longer.

I have a weekend of physical activity. A stone mason is coming next week to rebuild my patio and raised garden bed. I have to dig out all the plants from the bedto try to save them for replanting.

Sunday morning I am doing an American Heart Walk. I made a donation but I wish I could skip the walk. The president of my organization asked me to join her team -- in other words, a command performance. I have to drive 45 minutes to a park to walk around in circles. Total distance is three miles.

I hope I get a nap in there somewhere, and I have to read my book for book club, too.

Even a busy weekend beats the office!

Yes, definitely a slight chill in the air. Seems like the first day in a long time that I'm not sweating, so I'm really enjoying it. For me in recent year summer is just another season, one that happens to be annoyingly hot. So I think any sadness that it's over is just a remnant from school years past!

And I tell you, reading Linda C's apple thread got me in the mood for apple picking (which I've never done), making apple pies and other cool-weather meals, and that's got me pretty happy right now.

So I don't know about everyone else, but I'm hoping for a nice, long fall and then a dreadfully cold and snowy winter.

Between a joint 90th birthday party on Saturday and midday NASCAR on Sunday, I'm sure I'll figure out a way to get absolutely nothing done yet another weekend!

It's breezy here today, but we still aren't giving up the shorts yet!

Ended up with 25 for the holidays the first night and 14 for last night. I don't want to see another brisket for some time. Four of them, with only a little bit left over. Two turkeys, gave the carcasses away, and now I'm not sure that was a good idea, except I know they'll share the soup with me :)

Pam, my book club is meeting this week and once again I didn't read the book. I go anyway and still involve myself in the conversation, LOL! I hope you find some quiet time, between walking and planting!

Fenworth, the local papers all had the U-pick articles this week! We'll be going out east one of these days to pick some! Good luck on your walk!

Stacie, sounds like a great weekend, busy and fun! Homecoming is always a fun time I remember those days! Great snacks you're sending in, the kids will love it!

Happy Friday, everyone!

Another one whose weekend is yet unplanned. I have to work tomorrow morning 8-noon, but after that anything goes!

If it's nice out (which it isn't right now, BRRRRRR), I may run into the Minneapolis or St Paul farmers market and see what looks good.

Yes I agree with everyone that fall is in the air! I love this season.

After a long summer of moving 4 dump truck loads of dirt by hand with hubby and always complaining that we should rent a bobcat and get it done....he would complain that it is cheaper for us to do it ourselves. Well I told him last weekend was my last weekend of shoveling 15 yards of dirt that fall baseball and sunday school was upon up and I am going to be dutiful mom and take DS to them. Guess that got to him because first phone this morning was order more dirt (suprise!), next call was did I order the bobcat (after falling off my chair) I got right on it and it arrives tonight til monday morning. Last call was as long as we have the bobcat we need more dirt to finish. We will finish this weekend. I am so excited about this I can't stand it.

So I will be clinking tonight sitting on that bobcat smiling like the cheshire cat!

A late clink to everyone from me too! It's Football season now, so it's Friday night H.S. Football for my group. College games tomorrow and the NFL on Sunday....I know I'm one of the few but I'm loving it!!

No big plans here for the weekend. We have cooler temps and no humidity again, I've got the windows open and I'm loving it. I wanted to do some more pickles this weekend but the farmers market told me their next field of cukes wouldn't be ready until next week.

Fall is coming for sure but I'll pass on winter....thank you very much!

It's been chilly here all week but last night we had our first frost. I am usually looking forward to Winter but this year, I'm not quite ready yet.

I've got a busy weekend here. I have to bring in some more boxes from the barn and get them unpacked and put away.

Yesterday I discovered a Woodman's Grocery Store not too far from our home and also Caputo's Market. So we are going to explore them this morning. And tomorrow is the Bear's Opening Home Game......YEA! Weather is supposed to be perfect football weather and it will be fun. I've got to find my Pink Bears Hat!

Yep....our west pasture was about 3/4 covered with frost this morning.

I know it got to around freezing last night. I went out to my makeshift greenhouse to bring in my African Violets about 11:00 pm and it was 40 degrees at that point. Last year was the same with our first frost about the 3rd week in Sept.

i gotta meet this elery guy! it has to be one intrepid soul that will attempt making an "honest woman" out of annie! sending hugs and best wishes for a very long and happy life together, girl!

i have a million things i should be doing but don't want to open up the cans of paint too fast, you know...not only do i hate painting but it's sort of gray and wet out there. perfect napping weather but my conscience would nag me too much to allow for such a thing. but i bet if i pulled out a book i could block out that nagging :) hoope everyone enjoys their weekend!

LOL San...Well it's our only bye weekend for Youth Football..so it's a lazy day..Hubby was going to go into work..but apparently the bed was to comfy..and he couldn't pull himself out...~Darn it kinda..coulda used that overtime $$~

I've been out in the garage rummaging and trying to figure what I can get myself into. LOL...
I, like San, know what should and needs to be done..but I'm sure I can find something that will make me forget..

I have a few doors to knock on, to see if they will allow me to remove apples from their property that just are falling to the ground..if so that'll keep me a bit busy for a while. LOL

The dog and I have been taking walks in the am...and she's been my shadow all day..she's like hey...I'm ready..where's the leash..I guess it won't hurt to put on the socks and shoes, grab the leash and get a quick stroll in...

Have a wonderful weekend everyone...Football is always on here...but I only like to watch if I can watch my children..They don't play on tv YET......

Our first cool front is supposed to come in tonight. Looks like it already passed by David. First time in the sixties since May? It won't last but it will sure be a relief.

I woke up around 4:30 this morning and I think I actually heard and felt the cold front come in.

And Annie - ooh, that's marvelous news and I absolutely loved the wedding narrative. So much more interesting than a stuffy affair.
