A stick of butter over a bite of steamed rice (exaggeration, but not by much! LOL) and left over sweet and sour chicken.

Our school lunches are $2.65. The lunches here seem decent. They offer 3 main meals each day. Everyday there is also a choice of Yogurt, Hummus or PB&J sandwich. With the above you get a choice of fruit, veggie or starch. There is also a salad bar option. I have checked the lunch menus all year and was THRILLED to see NO FRENCH FRIES EVER. I think that's great! Although there is pizza every Friday, but the portions are small and kid appropiate. We also have a credit system, where I place money on her account. Kids don't handle money at all if they don't want to. I can also get an itemized list of what she has bought. My DD brings her lunch 95% of the time. Once a month they serve "Breakfast for Lunch" (Pancakes, turkey sausage & milk) which she absolutely loves. But I am very happy to pack her lunch since I know it's healthy and foods she enjoys and will eat. Normal day she gets turkey, carrot sticks, fruit (like apple slices, grapes) and popcorn. Kids are not allowed to "trade" or bring Candy for the snack, but I'm sure it goes on. My DD is picky, so she would not eat a school lunch each day-heaven forbid the sauce touch the pasta!! LOL My issue is that kids may take the veggie or fruit option but not eat it. Or just choose the starches and ala carte "junkier" items. I think our school system does the best they can with foods most kids like (Baked chicken tenders instead of fried) Most of the breads are Whole grains each day etc. Nice selection of fresh fruits. When I was in school the lunches were so/so. I knew my mom's fresh food was better then the mass produced, waiting under a heat lamp school lunch. I normally brought my lunch as it was MUCH quicker too. But you could have spent your "lunch" money on a meal of Twinkies and chips! I could strangle the 15 year old me, for all the junk I ate and NEVER thought twice about!!! Here is a link that might be useful: Lunch menu for the month

I am having a small get together next weekend on the Sunday at lunchtime, hopefully outside. It’s sort of an early family Christmas because others in the family will be going away. There will be 12-14 adults with two small children and a baby. I’ve been thinking and planning what to do and have changed my mind a couple of times. At the moment I’m thinking for a starter I will make a tray of appertisers consisting of smoked salmon on cucumber, rare roast beef on pumpernickel labneh balls rolled in dill and sesame seeds My stepdaughter will take the tray around to serve the others while all having a drink and chatting. For the main course I was thinking of making a cold meat platter with rolled ham slices, prosciutto, salami and mortadella A large turned out Russian salad A tomato, red pimento and green split olive salad Small dinner rolls Some flat bread (I’ll buy these both) DH will cook some sausages on the BarBQ… perhaps this isn’t necessary. A small plate of organic chicken nuggets for the children. For Dessert I will buy a couple cakes from the bakery and decorate them with raspberries. Have a bowl of whipped cream available. I thought I’d have tables for sitting and eating in the garden but the food at a self serve buffet inside.Bread, cutlery and condiments out on the table(s) What do you think??? What have I missed.???

Thanks to Petalique for providing me with my own thread. Goodness I hope the glitch with Houzz gets sorted pretty quick. You’re right of course floral, the spread needs something green and instead of lettuce I shall make a Cole slaw with lots of parsley( which I have growing ) to freshen it up. Meat heavy is not really a problem as there are 5 youngish men who will wolf down any sort of meat. One of the younger women is vegetarian but with 3 salads she should be OK. And of course cheese. I think I’ll put some on the meat platter. The children are 2 and half and 5 and the baby is 10 months old… all eat basically what the adults eat. Which is great isn’t it. Plllog, temperature supposed to be 25’C so quite a nice temperature. We have some shade under a pergola and trees so should be nice for a sit down lunch. The dinner rolls/ flat breads are really to have with the meal not to make sandwiches. I still can’t decide if we will need the BarBQ’d sausages but then it is Australia and we always have a BBQ. (smile). Haven’t had this many ( now 16 ) since well before Covid and feel out of practice… still it is fun and DH is lovely and supportive, mending tables and de - spidering stored chairs.

Coming from CT, if they take the train it would be into Grand Central. From GCT to the NYPL is about 2 blocks, assuming you exit from the correct door. That said, I think they shared a limo last time? My concern about BPG is not that they will be non-existent, but that the best people will have left, and a restaurant that may close (not just relocate) is tempted to cut corners and not care about reputation/reviews. I say "no." Uber in NYC is a mixed bag. Moreso than any other place I use it, I get time quotes that are then drastically increased when I actually select a mode, and i get cancellations after waiting for some time. All this while I watch taxis pass. My experience is mostly rush hour Midtown so YMMV.

Two perfect avacados. Made guacamole with some lemon, tomato, purple onion, and cilantro, Tony's seasoning and a few tortilla chips.

It was more than I needed but the avacados were perfectly ripe and tomorrow would have been over ripe, if I had just used one.

I had a couple of hotdogs and chips. Went out and got some stuff to make cream of potatoe soup for dinner. When I was stationed over in Germany, I ate a soup similar to this in a restaurant and went home to try and duplicate it. It has shredded carrots and finely chopped onions, heavy cream and real butter. YUM!

I stopped at my fav Chinese restaurant and brought home beef & peppers with white rice. I always get a large order and have enough for three days lunches. MMMMMM good! Dottie

When on cruise Christmas, I had for breakfast daily pb on whole grain toast with bacon.
I'm satisfied until the next cruise :o)

Caroline, I just peeled a bunch of potatoes, maybe 5 lbs? Cut them into little cubes. Finely chopped onions (about 1 1/2 medium onions), shredded some carrots and put everything into a big pot of water to cook. After the potatoes were soft, I scooped some of the water out to make room for chicken broth and the cream. Before I added them to the pot, I took out about half the potatoes and mashed them up and put them back into the pot to help thicken the soup.

Added the cream and chicken broth, salt pepper and a whole stick of butter. It didn't seem thick enough so I added some flour and water mixed together and put through a little sieve to keep the lumps out. I then added two chicken buillion cubes for flavor since it didn't taste quite right. I hadn't made this soup in a long time so I had to try and remember what I did the last time.

Today's lunch, leftover hot-and-sour soup from last night's Chinese bring-in. I worked yesterday, and was WHIPPED! We always order soup for lunch later, as it's a long way to the restaurant and it's cheap! Worked today too, in a different business, and had some of office-mate's Special K crackers with the soup..they were yummy! Tomorrow I'm feeding the remodelling crew of one along with DH, and they will have Reuben sandwiches. I will find some other leftovers which appeal to me. I love Reuben sandwiches, when someone serves them to me.
