OT perhaps: Do you keep a journal on your computer?

I've kept a journal on my computer for years. I'm not talking about blogging online...I had a journal software program that worked like a diary on my computer. Now the computer with that program is being retired, and I'd like to get a somewhat better journal for my new machine. But which one?? There are many out there, one more feature-laden (and pricey) than the next.

So far I particularly like one called The Journal, but it costs $39.95 for a download and $54 for a CD-ROM version, and I want to put it on two or three computers.

Any ideas?

I'm curious, what do the journal programs do that a word processing program doesn't? (Just please don't make it sound too good or I'll want to buy one!)

What I've done is just use Word Pad, putting the newest entry on top so I don't have to scroll to the bottom of the document to start writing again. I make a new document for each year. If I want to go back and find something, it's easy to use the Edit/Find feature and find a keyword within a document.

I just use notepad which is on all Windows machines.
The easiest way to open notepad on Windows is to go to your Start menu, then select "run", then make sure field is totally blank and type in "notepad" and it will bring up a blank file. You can save this to any directory on your computer. You probably will want a shortcut on your desktop so it is easy to find next time.

I have a text file currently that is titled jour010105.txt. I started it on January 1 of this year. I enter ".LOG" on the first line at the top of the file. This causes a time stamp to be entered every time I open the file. I enter plain simple ordinary text. I have some "keywords" I use that help searching later.

For example: TODO: precedes every list of items I need to do. The good thing is I can enter these as I think of them. Then I can search back for any old ones to make sure I've done. There are many many other tricks, too numerous to enter here.

Eventually, on a file, you will get a message from notepad telling you "out of memory". This is because there is a limit on the size of the journal file. When this happens, I just start a new one using the date. I start in the same directory as all my other journal text files. They go back many years. I put phone calls I need to make. People I talk to , random thoughts, whatever. It is very free form but because I can search for anything it works. I do need to kind of think sometimes when I make an entry to use language that will make it easy to search for later if that is what I think I will need to do.

The really good thing about this system is that it can be used and read on any operating system whether Windows, Macintosh, Linux or IBM or even those little palm pilots. Plain ascii text is a universal language. Always has been and I would bet that it always will be.

I would be lost without my electronic journal. I make a shortcut so all I have to do is click once. The only hard part is when one journal file fills and you need to transition to a new journal file but not really very hard.

I highly recommend "plain text". Besides being universal, the file opens very quickly with "notepad.exe" on my Windows system. Not like Microsoft Word files which take much longer.

On other systems, there will be some other text reader. Worst case is that you may need to find out the name of the text reader and define it when you transfer your journal file to the new system. I think the hardest part of this system is that you have to be comfortable with the file structure on your computer whether Dos or Windows XP or Linux. Because you will probably be copying these journal files at some point, possibly even renameing them, etc. I don't think I'm assuming too much computer knowledge. I just love having it so simple. I use notepad files for lots of other things besides my journal, such as my big shopping list I check for shopping for groceries, my list of videos to choose from when we want to rent something, list of possible menus I use when I trying to plan dinner, on and on.

I have all the orchids together assigned a number. The number gets an * in front if it is gone for any reason and I don't reuse the number. I have a column for a species/hybrid indicator. The genus, the species, the whole tag contents, flower picture ID, plant picture ID, OrchidSpecies.com page ID, a collection/excess/for-sale indicator and what it is potted in. All that is sliced and diced and sorted with notes, which are separate files, depending on if the relate to the species or the specific plant. Printed lists are: one line per species (I take to buying opportunities so I don't get more), plants that need a flower picture, plants that need a plant picture. And of course the web plant list and individual plant web pages. I am still filling in the pictures. I had a lot of plants before I did the inventory, but every new plant now gets a picture. The flower pictures are only of that plant, not somebody elses plant, so I have to wait for a bloom for that.

Don't know if anyone is still following this thread. But I've gotten some good ideas. I started organizing my gardening stuff about 3 years ago.....out of necessity. I am forgetful. And I got sick and tired of having to stop, go back in the house get on the computer and look up stuff. So now I have one notebook where I keep general info like instructions on pruning and dividing perennials, fertilizing lawns, and clever ideas I see in garden magazines, just anything rather general. I have another notebook where there is a page for each plant that contains a picture and growing info, and a description of a location. In that notebook I also have a bar graph type chart of bloom times for the different plants in my yard. That let me see at a glance that I needed to plant something to bloom at a specific time of year. I also have started working on putting photos in there taking of different section of the garden on the first of each month. I also have made a rather detailed chart of actual locations of my plants that shows me how large the plant will eventually grow. It's not that I am organized, it's that I was driving myself crazy with forgetting information. I've also got a sheet in there to tell me what has to be pruned in the spring, summer, or deadheaded during the year, or cut back in the winter. I've also started a diagram to show where the shade/sun is in my yard during the year....again this is out of desperation because my tree is growing and I'm trying to figure out where it is a good idea to put another raised bed for veges. Along with this I am keeping a very simple journal where I just jot down info like when did I fertilize, what did I use, where I had a problem develop and what I think caused it, I'll note what plant I might want to rip out and what I might want to replace it with, what needs to be moved, general info on the rain (lots or little) and if the temps were unusual, when the hummers showed up. I'm actually pretty surprised at how incredibly useful the info is to me the next year. And I really wish I had started this many years ago. The two notebooks are something that basically only I work on in the winter when I can't be outside gardening. It keeps my mind going! And by the way, I'm not normally a terribly organized person by any stretch of definition, so this all surprises me. I think every person has to find the method that works for their own unique way of thinking. I don't think I could buy something someone else had developed and have it work for me. A nice "take with you to the garden" journal consists of using a recipe box (I prefer the 5"x8" size) and use two types of dividers (Alphabetical A-Z and Monthly Jan-Dec). I then file a card for each plant/tree/shrub by name of plant and also include plant detail/care/other information, where/when/price purchased, and where planted in the alabetical section. I also can place a photo protected by clear tape on the back of the card. In the monthly section, I file general cards noting "TO DO'S" that I would like to accomplish that month so I don't forget seasonal needs (fertilize, prune, etc). One could also add additional sets of alphabetal A-Z dividers in possibly different colors to use to further divide different groups (annuals, perennials, trees/shrubs, etc). You can also use the monthly section for other monthly reminders you may want to remember (birthdays, anniversaries, or special "to do" reminders). Hope this is helpful - Works for me!

I keep a journal, but I mostly use it to handle stressful times and occurrences, not to record daily life. The online one I tried was My Wonderful Days Lite, but I didn't love it. I prefer Paper which is the most realistic sketchbook/notebook that I've found. You can actually use a pen tool within the app to write on your pages. There's something about writing that's more therapeutic to me than typing. You also might like Clear which is great for list making.
