I posted on here last week about having my great room painted a dark brown. Thanks to you all and some great suggestions, I went with Devine Mocha. I love it! It's a warm brown. Very livable, I think. We are starting from scratch in this room, so now I need ideas for accent colors. Furniture and window treatments. Especially window treatments. The window next to the front door has me baffled. I had planned to hang panels on either side of the window, but thanks to dh messing with the window placement, there is now no room. I don't know what to hang here.

Yummy. don't forget to add the silver foil that your hershey chocolate was wrapped in.

Blues, aquas, happy greens and pinks are all good players with chocolate. Even the right red or orange can work.

Wow--that was over a year ago that I asked my question about a red with yellow reverses. Appreciate folks still making suggestions. For some reason, Ketchup & Mustard and some of the others just don't make my heart sing, but I will keep Smart and Sassy and Dark Night on a reserve list, for future reference. I don't remember why I did not dig up Gypsy Carnival last fall or this early spring--probably just got too busy with other things--but this year Gypsy has been shaping up a bit--not as many disease problems and its actually growing fuller so it looks more like the floribunda it is supposed to be. On the other hand, this past summer has been so hot (over 100 degrees almost ALL SUMMER) that most of my garden shut down, so I'm not exactly sure where things are. We are now moving into cooler fall temps, so maybe that will tell me if Gypsy is moving toward her full potential--definitely next spring should. I guess I'll wait and see. I do love her BIG FAT blooms and I've worried over her for so long--now that she seems to (maybe) be hitting her stride, I kinda want to be there to see how it turns out. But I do appreciate everyone's continuing interest. If next spring Gypsy once again becomes a BS mess, I've got my reserve list handy. Thanks. Kate

Checking back in again. I took the picture at the Dawes Arboretum in May and did some research at the time, trying to figure it out. Of course I've forgotten exactly where I searched but I searched a bit more today and found this in the Dawes Accession Records: D1996-0265 Picea pungens 'Blue Kiss' Accession data: source: Brotzman's Nursery, Inc. provenance: CGO yellow new growh date received: 1/31/1996 how received: SC quantity: 12 on grounds: YES So, I guess I was a bit out of line stating that Brotzman's introduced the plant since Tim says that they haven't. But it sounds like what I saw and what Dannaher's is selling is one and the same. I think that it is a nicer looking plant than 'Spring Ghost' because of finer quality foliage and goes a nice blue in summer. When I was just out of high school, I took a trip that passed by Brotzman's. Tim was kind enough to give me a tour of the nursery (plant collector's dream!) even though they were busy barerooting 3" 'Red Sunset' Maples, in early fall none-the-less. I remember a very dense, oval-shaped, blue, dwarf Colorado Spruce that he pointed out and that he was evaluating. I wonder if this is the same plant. 'Spring Ghost' can get large. Bailey Nurseries has a 25'-30' plant by their main office. Looks just like an ordinary Colorado in summer. One final thought, I told Bill Hendricks about 'Blue Kiss' and he was very interested in getting some wood from Tim. If things go well, Klyn may be putting out some plants on the market. goldgirl- I live in the middle of wheat country (Kansas) and have been around grain production all my life, have used wheat for making everything from wheatgrass to "wheat meat" and have many varieties in storage (hard winter, hard spring, soft spring, red and white varieties, durum, spelt, Kamut, einkorn, triticale- which is a cross of durum wheat and rye), and have studied the subject quite a bit. Genetically modified (GM) wheat (when a gene or partial gene sequence was inserted or deleted using gene-splicing technology for herbicide-resistance, or reduction of celiac disease-provoking sequences - as examples) is ONLY being produced in test patches and it's NOT sold or used commercially in the U.S. Nor is it in general production or sold as seed wheat, so your friend doesn't have all her facts straight. What she probably means is that the wheat has been hybridized (crossing different strains to generate new characteristics - such as higher protein, shorter straw, white wheat - which lacks the genes for bran color, etc.), and that is NOT the same as genetic modification, but still has some concerns surrounding it. Even so-called "heritage" or "heirloom" varieties (such as Turkey Red - which was the first hard winter wheat grown in the late 1870's in Kansas - brought here by German-Russian Mennonites - and Red Fife) have been hybridized through selection, and are different genetically from the early varieties of wheat or wheat-like grasses such as emmer, Kamut, einkorn, and even spelt. As if going gluten-free wasn't enough of a challenge, many people who avoid gluten also need to avoid dairy. You may want to try recipes using coconut flour, coconut milk, and dairy-free coconut yogurt for the probiotics, instead of almond flour/meal/milk. Coconut flour is a low-carb gluten-free alternative to wheat. I tend to avoid the high-glycemic flours and starches common to many gluten-free baking recipes since we are also trying to avoid diabetes (rampant in hubby's family) by being on a low-glycemic diet. If you can tolerate oats, there are all kinds of oat-based recipes. Buckwheat is another gluten-free choice for breakfast foods, along with quinoa, amaranth and flax. I also make waffles using sprouted lentils - and that's just a partial list of options. Coconut, oat, and rice milk can be made at home (along with other kinds of nut and seed milks). I would personally avoid the commercial brands due to sweeteners, stabilizers, thickeners, and other ingredients included in these non-dairy milk products. They are less expensive and easy-to-make at home if you have a high-speed blender. I recently found instructions for making "oat kefir" and "oat yogurt", so they are on my list of things-to-try (mostly out of curiosity). Check your local library (or through inter-library loan) for copies of: -Gluten, Wheat, & Dairy Free - a LOVE FOOD production. -The Spunky Coconut Cookbook - by Kelly V. Brozyna (gluten free, casein free, sugar free) -Cooking With Coconut Flour - Bruce Fife, N.D. -The Everything Coconut Diet Cookbook - Anji Sandage with Lorena Novak Bull, RD You can also find an enormous amount of recipes using coconut flour on-line (see link below). The one down-side to using coconut flour is the large amount of eggs you also need to use. I often make coconut flour muffins and coconut flour bread to use for breakfast. You may also find some recipes that would work for you by checking Paleo and Low-Carb sites since they both generally avoid grains. Low-Carb recipes often use a lot of protein powder, but I have to limit the amount of protein powders I consume (from all sources - whey, egg white, rice, pea, etc.) because they cause inflammation. -Grainlady Here is a link that might be useful: Tropical Traditions

Juellie, yes, the waffle cookies are made in the waffle iron. I've had the recipe forever (well 30 or 40 years) and hadn't made them for at least 6-8 years so decided it was time. I love them. We used to put ice cream between and just frost the top one to have homemade ice cream sandwiches! Mush, I had the oven at 300 degrees and left the Rolos in for 1 minute plus 10 to 20 additional seconds. I think you could have the oven a little lower and leave them in a little longer and that would soften the caramel a little more instead of just melting the chocolate. Casey, the pretzel ones are just round pretzels, laided out side by side on a foil covered cookie pan, then a Hershey's kiss placed in the middle. Heat for a couple of minutes in a 300 degree oven or until the kiss gets soft, then push a pretzel filled holiday M&M in the middle. Carla, this recipe didn't use cool whip in the lemon cookies, just cake mix, 2 eggs, and 1/3 cup of veggie oil. I'd love to try the recipe with the cool whip, though, if you ever come across it. Thanks everyone, for all the nice compliments. I just loved that White Gumdrop Fudge and the other quick candies. That's what turned my platters from kinda blah to something really pretty and festive!

Whoops, wrong color. I used Devine cocoa in here, not mocha.

Could I put a dark brownn leather couch in here or would that be overkill? I've been thinking a dark brown leather couch, and then some chairs/ottomans with lighter fabric. Maybe something w/ reds/creams/greens.

For accent colors, I would try picking out some other colors from the rocks in the fireplace, though I don't know for sure if it would work.

I keep thinking about looking down at that paint can, it must have been tempting to dip your finger in and taste it! :)

The color looks great! The tall ceilings can handle a color like that and especially with all those gorgeous windows. I would hesitate to bring in more brown in the bigger furniture pieces for fear of it becoming "cave-like". Lighter fabrics will offset the dark and bring in some balance. I "googled" brown rooms to see what how they were decorated and I saw either a subdued almost monochroatic rooms with zebra skin rugs and white sofa's and chairs or punches of unexpected color like acid green, pink and blue.. So don't think it all has to be earth tones from here on out. You have a great start! You achieved the color you were looking for, it will all come together. Some inspiration for color might come from a rug that has some brown in it. Usually there are many colors found with it, like gold, red, blue and so on. If you are planning on a rug, I might select that next and then move on from there.

I wonder what a light silver gray leather furniture would look like in your space. Cream leather would be more expected choice which would be a wonderful neutral.

The colors in your fireplace are beautiful, my first thought was to bring grays into the room, I think skypathway was onto something, a pretty silvery gray dramatic curtain or even in the furniture would be gorgeous. You could probably do brown leather as long as you follow the 60/30/10 rule and bring in more accent color in the room.

Okay, bear with me here, because it might sound a little... out there. But my fave combination with brown is orange and green. I know it *sounds* 70s, but I saw a magazine layout a few years ago around Thanksgiving that coordinated dark brown walls, light to medium pumpkin colors and a light gray-green. I thought it was SO so stunning. You've got all those beautiful windows and such a nice view of the trees outside, that shades of green and, at other times of the year, orange, are already going to be part of the color scheme in that room (whether you want them or not!!). It makes sense to work with them, rather than against them. I couldn't get my husband to agree on brown walls, or else I'd have pulled this combo off at my house. I think it seems very comforting.

Good job picking your color, by the way, it's beautiful! Follow the additional links on this webpage, there are pretty paint colors and the nicest velvet fabrics to inspire...

Scwren, I knew you would love that color once you saw it. It is my number 1 favorite right now, but I'm not so far gone that I've used it in more than one room!

I have golds and reds with the cocoa and it's great, but I really like amanda's idea of orange and green - I think that could be really fun!

Love the way your room turned out - the color looks amazing with your fireplace. Congrats!

You are not "out there" Amanda, or if you are - then I am too. :) My adjoining kitchen is painted a sagey green and the powder room around the corner is a burnt orange, pumpkin color. We were installing cabinets last night and I must say that I really like the colors. They are restful/soothing - something. (A celebratory sidenote: we had our first fire in the fireplace and it was delightful!)

Les - the ceilings are currently SW alabaster, a creamy white. Do you have other suggestions? I had thought of painting it a color - but haven't so far. I'd love to hear your ideas.
