Happy fast to all who do - I don't, I'm a wus. I end up in in the synagogue school helping fasting teachers feed the little kids.

We're breaking our fast (well DHs) at friends - I'm bringing a tray of spanakopita and a quiche.

Sunday we'll try to get our sukkah up!

I don't know what my or our plans are for today. I do have some shopping to do, as it's payday...Kellan has football practice, but can't participate to much as his throwing hand's thumb was jammed at school recess on Wednesday, and it's not pretty! He's the starting QB, and they have a huge important game tomorrow evening!!
But Saturday will be football, hopefully a trip to TJ's since I'll be so close, because of the games location..and Sunday, a day of rest. :o)

L'shanah tovah and an easy fast to all of you who do.

For those of you who don't, it's not all that hard. There's a rough couple of hours at the time your body is expecting its next meal when it keeps reminding you with low blood sugar and hunger pangs, but that passes. Thirst is annoying but tolerable (unless you eat a lot of salty food at the pre-fast meal). For me, the hardest part is the lack of caffeine, which is why I've spent the past month gradually switching to decaf. And the aftermath, which is why I break the fast with a high-fiber yogurt smoothie and plenty of water rather than solid food.

For a change, I'm actually organized. Tonight's dinner is partly prepared, and last night I finished baking for the break-the-fast party at our friends.

Sunday afternoon we'll have our annual tree-pruning and sukkah-building party. I still don't know what I'll be making, but I'll figure it out Sunday morning.

The first 20 to 22 hours usually are fine for me. It is that last bit when I get a headache that I find difficult.

Today I've got to make a rice pudding and a bread pudding for break fast. The raisins for the bread pudding are soaking in bourbon already. I'm making a quiche for tonight and I think I might do another bread pudding for dessert.

Our sukkah was designed to go up pretty easily. That will happen on Sunday. We have a bushy evergreen small tree in our yard that provides the covering each year. That one tree provides lots of covering and it will still look full after it is pruned. A week ago I made pickled beets (I like the way the golden ones came out) and turnips to serve when we have our Havurah over for sukkot.

TGIF, all. I've been gone for a couple of weeks, mired in a sea of green beans, tomatoes and peaches to can. And installing a new server and a bunch of new computers. And I fasted....for my colonoscopy...ugh!

Today I am taking a break from the long list of technical issues that I need to fix, scrubbing my sticky kitchen floor and canning the last of my chipotle ketchup. Fall hit us hard all of a sudden. It's a nice break from all the hot weather, think I'll make soup.

Tomorrow I get to work alone, which means a nice quiet day of sitting at my circ computer and ordering books between checkouts. A hard job but somebody's gotta do it.

Sunday we'll hopefully get the yard all picked up....we've had a bear that's been trying to get into our barbecue and making a mess scrounging for dog food. The other night DH turned on the porch light and was face to face with him on our back porch. Fortunately the dogs are smart/wimpy enough to go cower at the shop....our neighbor thinks he killed one of his bear hounds last month.

TGIF to all, boy did this week fly! For those that observe Yom Kippur, may you all be inscribed for another year, AND, I hope your fasts are easy. We will be in services for a good part of tomorrow, then breaking the fast with an easy dairy meal at our house. Just finished boiling the eggs for egg salad, and will do some prep later today for quiches, etc. I find fasting to be very difficult, I get light headed and very queasy. I usually cannot make it past 4:00 P.M. Sunday eve, we'll do a makeshift sukkah in our yard, using palm fronds and whatever else has blown down recently with all the tropical activity we've been having. It's a bit daunting to build a sukkah when hurricane season is in full swing, but we do it anyway, at least some semblance of a sukkah hut:-)

I've got fall garden chores to start -- trying to get ahead of the annual leaf dump so hopefully most of them will blow across the road & I'll end up with just barely enough to do my Nov mulching ( well I can wish anyway).

Another wishing a special weekend to all those who celebrate Yom Kippur. Will also be thinking of the Michigan gang and the PA gang.....lots going on.

This weekend we have a business commitment on Saturday night but a very special one! We are going to see Cirque de Soleil's Kooza performance. Suppose to be amazing.

Clive went to the one in Montreal and said the appetizers and drinks served before, at intermission and after were over the top. This is a very unusual troop who does things in unusual ways.

Clive said some of the appetizers were floating, within an easy reach, on the strings of helium balloons and as you picked your appetizer from the string the balloon floated to the top of the tent. He said all the presentations were very unusual and breathtaking...this from a guy who doesn't impress easily.

Can't wait to see it all...I'll take pictures if I feel comfortable doing that given lots of Clive's clients will be there.

Sunday is the garden, and a bushel of red peppers to roast and freeze.

Sharon, I love the Cirque de Soleil. I've seen multiple shows - starting when I got free tickets long ago when they had no money and had to trade tickets for ad space. We'll probably go in December to "Corteo" with friends.

We're supposed to get some much-needed rain tonight, but I just got back from my lunch walk and it's hot, hot, hot out.

boy--there really IS alot going on this weekend, isn't there? i'm looking forward to news of the gatherings! and for those who are celebrating yom kippur (the new year?) can you tell me the tradition of the fasting and when it begins and ends?

the weather has been absolutely beautiful this week and even though it gets dark earlier already, we have taken a couple rides around the lake. i really hate to see the summer end...but it was a good week at work! we had a really good pot luck at the office today, which i enjoyed alot and i more than accomplished my required workload. yep--a really good week!

ted brought home some of the most beautiful pears from one of his office mates and i've been looking at recipes. i may just end up baking a little something (wouldn't that be a surprise in this household?)! although i think the PA or MI gathering or gina's ping pong sounds like a LOT more fun, we'll either put the garden beds to rest or put the finishing touches on that pesky dining room. either would be a decent choice for us :)

San - I am by no means an expert on Judaism but this is my understanding -- Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement and is the holiest day of the year -the last of the 10 Days of Awe -- (the first day being Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year) -- Reform Judaism teaches there are at least 3 reasons to fast: (1) for self-discipline - to remember that we can be master, not slaves, of our desires; (2) for empathy, so we can think of those who go hungry not by choice; and (3) for penitence, as part of the atonement we are supposed to seek during this time -- during the days of Awe, Jews are supposed to ask those whom they have hurt for forgiveness - Yom Kippur itself is for Jews to atone for sins they have committed against God-- the fast begins after the evening meal the night of Yom Kippur and continues until after sundown on the next day (all Jewish holidays go from sundown to sundown) - so one actually misses only 2 meals -breakfast and lunch the day of Yom Kippur -I actually like to fast on Yom Kippur, as it distinguishes Yom Kippur from all other days of the year for me, but I think most of my friends don't fast -- even so, they are all happy to join us for break-fast however(I'm expecting 40+ tomorrow night) -so I need to do a little more cleaning, as I'll be at temple all tomorrow -hope all who are fasting have a good fast -Happy New Year and for all, have a good weekend!

Wishing our Jewish friends a great holiday! I have inside info that the MI gathering is off to a good start.....I'll leave it at that for now! I'm sure the PA gang will have a great time too.

Nothing big going on here this weekend. I'm watching College FB right now...go Sooners! Some more canning, washing windows, and general chores are in the plan. I'm sure a boat ride and a dip in the pond will happpen too. Hot and humid weekend here again.....

The big thing this week was helping my DS decide on my DN grad pics and all of the other stuff.....I remember changing his diapers and babysitting the little ____!! Man, time sure does fly by!
