In search of manual coffee grinder.

I am looking for a manual coffee grinder at a price of under $40 as a gift for a male friend who is often without electricity. Ideally it should be small, sturdy and have no glass, be attractive, efficient, not annoying, and grind enough coffee for at least two servings of strong coffee. I would sacrifice appearance for function and durability.

Any ideas?

I have a similar issue with a Bolens 8HP XL Chipper that only shows a model number of 47018 on a sticker with the serial number. When looking for the blade/knife when using this model number on the web it keeps wanting to use part number 981-0490 and what is shipped to you is 781-0490. Difference being that the machine blade hole spacing is 1 ½” or about 37mm using 5/16 screws and it’s about 3” long. The part shipped to me has spacing of about 1 7/8” and 3 3/8” long. So far in my search for blades some expert mentioned the fowling; “ Bolens went out of business and was purchased by troy-bilt, when troy-bilt went bankrupt they we sold off in three different directions. Most of the chipper shredder business was sold off to Murray; Who then went out of business twice. Most manuals and parts were thrown in the dumpsters. ONLY Two semi loads of parts went to Murray who is now owned by Briggs and Stratton by Name only” I then found that the model number of mine may have been MC2800 that was made with the Bolens name and just a tiny difference can be seen. Also notice that this W-W Grinder Renegade 250 Chipper was very much the same except the hammer heads for the shredder unlike my lose flails/hammers dangling ones. In short, I’m left searching for a misfiled part number as I need a blade that is Length: 3.00 inches Width: 1.25 inches Thickness: 0.25 inches and Hole Spacing: 1.50 inches and it seems the Troy-Bilt fits these model numbers too; 47057 47058 47024 47321 and others or these part numbers; 1764810, 1764810MA(Murray #), 1762645. Thanks again everyone. I'll let you all know if/when I decide or what I get. You all have certainly given me a lot of food for thought. Cherryfizz, no you didn't get off topic at all, since I'm looking for whatever it takes for a good cup of coffee. I 'had' a coffee press, (got it used in a box from an auction) and gave it away without even trying it. Maybe I need another one, even if it is just for those rare occasions when the power is out, yet I can still heat things because I have a gas range. Maybe before getting a grinder I'll try some various coffees freshly ground in the store and invest in a vacuum sealing coffee canister. hmmmm.............

I have just about every knife imaginable. When I do squash, I wash it first, then microwave it for a minute or two, depending on the size. Cuts SO much easier. I've used my Wusthoff cleaver, my 8" Wusthoff chef's knife, a chinese cleaver and even resorted to DH bringing in the wood-mallet thingie. Microwaving makes it MUCH easier. I have the Solis Maestro burr grinder. I guess after 10+ years, they are discontinuing it and the newer version will be the Baratza. I spent about $130-50 (can't recall now) for it but it has been a JOY to use. I too am the only coffee drinker in my house. I have every gadget for coffee and tea. Love this thing. I guess these days, anything that lasts 10 years is considered golden, IMHO.

I use the Oxo Good Grips salt grinder, but we seldom add salt at the table, and the same is true of pepper. I have a brass Turkish coffee grinder that I use most of the time, but it is not adjustable and only makes a medium-fine grind. I also have a Trudeau pepper mill that I like and have had for many years, as well as a Kuhn Rikon vase grinder for pepper, which goes well with the Oxo salt grinder, although they do not match exactly, although I do put those on the dining table. I tend to use chilies instead of black pepper, and so I do not go through a lot of black pepper. I do use black pepper with dill and lemon when I do not want the flavors or dill and lemon to be overpowered, and I use it in other more delicately flavored dishes, such as hummus, potatoes, vegetables, and vinaigrette salad dressing. For intensely flavored dishes, I prefer to use the Habanero sauce I make or chilies from my yard. Lars Here is a link that might be useful: Oxo salt grinder

I was hoping the cheaper Turkish ones (that Lars linked to on the peppermill thread) had better reviews, but they don't seem to.

I looked at the cheaper Turkish ones too and saw the same thing. :( They appear to be decorative only.

Take a look at the similar one that I posted. The one with a longer folding arm, which makes it much easier to crank.

The grinder was originally made for grinding coffee for troops in the field, not for grinding spices.

DC, do you have a specific link or brand name to share?

I'd like to stay in a budget. The better Turkish ones are in the $80+ range.

I had to make a decision and ordered the one in the link. It isn't pretty looking and it has a glass canister :( but it appears to be decent quality with conical ceramic burrs. The reviews are mostly positive and for the price I think it's a good option.

My parents gave us a "new" one that they'd won in a game at a party. It was brand new to them and came to us brand new. I have no idea the brand, but it was for RV'ers, so I assumed that perhaps it was sold at Camping World or similar.

It's tall, skinny, and is even skinnier where you hold your hand. You put the beans in it, place it firmly on a table, and turn the handle. And grind. And grind. And grind. And grind. And grind. Just when you think you may be done, you grind some more. My husband must be a sadist, he loves the thing and uses it every day. Not me. Give me the electric one. Dump beans in, push down, Whirrrrrrrrrr----, done.

Eileen, there is a coffee roaster/cafe I stop at on the way to work. They sell grinders. I'll check to see what brands they carry.

This cracked me up! This is for someone on a sailboat with little electricity. There are some solar panels but they don't provide a lot of power.

I didn't come across that one on Amazon. It looks good too.
