In search of manual coffee grinder.

I am looking for a manual coffee grinder at a price of under $40 as a gift for a male friend who is often without electricity. Ideally it should be small, sturdy and have no glass, be attractive, efficient, not annoying, and grind enough coffee for at least two servings of strong coffee. I would sacrifice appearance for function and durability.

Any ideas?

I have a similar issue with a Bolens 8HP XL Chipper that only shows a model number of 47018 on a sticker with the serial number. When looking for the blade/knife when using this model number on the web it keeps wanting to use part number 981-0490 and what is shipped to you is 781-0490. Difference being that the machine blade hole spacing is 1 ½” or about 37mm using 5/16 screws and it’s about 3” long. The part shipped to me has spacing of about 1 7/8” and 3 3/8” long. So far in my search for blades some expert mentioned the fowling; “ Bolens went out of business and was purchased by troy-bilt, when troy-bilt went bankrupt they we sold off in three different directions. Most of the chipper shredder business was sold off to Murray; Who then went out of business twice. Most manuals and parts were thrown in the dumpsters. ONLY Two semi loads of parts went to Murray who is now owned by Briggs and Stratton by Name only” I then found that the model number of mine may have been MC2800 that was made with the Bolens name and just a tiny difference can be seen. Also notice that this W-W Grinder Renegade 250 Chipper was very much the same except the hammer heads for the shredder unlike my lose flails/hammers dangling ones. In short, I’m left searching for a misfiled part number as I need a blade that is Length: 3.00 inches Width: 1.25 inches Thickness: 0.25 inches and Hole Spacing: 1.50 inches and it seems the Troy-Bilt fits these model numbers too; 47057 47058 47024 47321 and others or these part numbers; 1764810, 1764810MA(Murray #), 1762645. The funny thing is, he usually PREFERS things that have to be done the "by hand" way. ThatÃ¯Â¿Â½s why we don't have a microwave (everything is done on the stove - including popcorn), and he NEVER uses our fancy food processor for chopping veggies. He also loves things that are compact so he can take them on his kayaking/camping trips. Usually our meals on camping trips are fancier then they are at home, so I thought this would be a handy tool: Turkish coffee to accompany our greek omelettes at breakfast. I appreciate all your recommendations. IÃ¯Â¿Â½ll certainly have a look at them. If manual labor werenÃ¯Â¿Â½t a concern, would the actual quality of the grind be any better from this little guy then the electronic units in the same price range?

I've used an electric Bosch Coffee/Spice mill, purchased off a clearance rack, for a lot of years (at least 10 years). I found one just like it recently and purchased it and put it away in storage because it's been such a workhorse in my kitchen and I know it works well. Friends who mill coffee beans complain they can't find one that will work well for coffee anymore, or they don't last long. If you are using it primarily for small amounts of spices, then I'd choose a small hopper. If you use it for flax seed for milling into flaxmeal, or other small seeds and grains, you may want a larger capacity hopper. The Bosch will grind spices, small grains and seeds. If you need rice flour in a recipe, it will make quick work of it. In fact, milling rice is a way to clean an electric Coffee/Spice mill, along with the cracker method arley mentioned. Once you use a mill frequently for something with strong-smelling oils, like coffee beans or flax, it will probably need to be used primarily for that item or your spices will pick up the smell of coffee or flax oil. I also use a suribachi with a pestle. A suribachi is different from a mortar because it's a larger serrated bowl instead of smooth. Great for small amounts of seedy spices or Gomashio (sesame-salt). I also have a manual Porkert Seed Mill which I use primarily for milling large amounts of small seeds into flour (amaranth and teff) because they can't be milled in my Nutrimill. The Porkert also does oily seeds (sesame, poppy, flax). It will mill more than you can easily mill in a coffee/spice mill. -Grainlady

Wash it well. Do not oil it, the oil will eventually go rancid and leave you with one hell of a stinky mess. Make sure that it is very very dry, (putting it in a low oven is one way of making sure it won't rust), and store in a heavy zip lock plastic bag. One trick I have for helping keep moisture at bay is to add a 1 pound bag of rice to the bag, just pour it in. If you do it during humid times, dry the rice in the oven first. Another trick is to put about half a dozen mothballs in a cloth bag and put them in the bag. As the mothballs sublimate, they slightly pressurize the bag, which prevents moist air from entering. Do NOT do that if you keep your grinder in a cabinet with food products, especially not those that will absorb odors.

I was hoping the cheaper Turkish ones (that Lars linked to on the peppermill thread) had better reviews, but they don't seem to.

I looked at the cheaper Turkish ones too and saw the same thing. :( They appear to be decorative only.

Take a look at the similar one that I posted. The one with a longer folding arm, which makes it much easier to crank.

The grinder was originally made for grinding coffee for troops in the field, not for grinding spices.

DC, do you have a specific link or brand name to share?

I'd like to stay in a budget. The better Turkish ones are in the $80+ range.

I had to make a decision and ordered the one in the link. It isn't pretty looking and it has a glass canister :( but it appears to be decent quality with conical ceramic burrs. The reviews are mostly positive and for the price I think it's a good option.

My parents gave us a "new" one that they'd won in a game at a party. It was brand new to them and came to us brand new. I have no idea the brand, but it was for RV'ers, so I assumed that perhaps it was sold at Camping World or similar.

It's tall, skinny, and is even skinnier where you hold your hand. You put the beans in it, place it firmly on a table, and turn the handle. And grind. And grind. And grind. And grind. And grind. Just when you think you may be done, you grind some more. My husband must be a sadist, he loves the thing and uses it every day. Not me. Give me the electric one. Dump beans in, push down, Whirrrrrrrrrr----, done.

Eileen, there is a coffee roaster/cafe I stop at on the way to work. They sell grinders. I'll check to see what brands they carry.

This cracked me up! This is for someone on a sailboat with little electricity. There are some solar panels but they don't provide a lot of power.

I didn't come across that one on Amazon. It looks good too.
