BASEBALL season has started. i'm listening to ds's 2nd ballgame

of the season.

he dh'd last night, and is today again too.

he called last night and said he went 2~4. Not bad for not seeing any live pitching for a long time! lol He said that they were his hallmard liners. And if the pitcher had been any taller, he'da been seriously injured.

today, they hit him on purpose in his first at bat.. first pitch, mid torso... and his second at bat, hit a sac fly. but as the kid announcing said, "That boy has power. That wasn't so much a sac fly as a sac linedrive, if it had been a fly (more air) it would have been out of here! lol

And they said that his second hit from last night would have killed the pitcher if it had been a little lower. That is SCARY! I always am nervous when HE pitches, and that is why.

anyway, I can't believe I'm listening to baseball.. lol

I have a little league rookie this year. My 6 y/o is playing for the first time. Practice starts next week for him. He is so excited!

Potatoes were my biggest miss! The Caribe potatoes harvested in July were just fine and are delicious - there's still a half box of them in the basement. Digging and replanting some of those same Caribe spuds worked not at all. Dad planted some organic spuds from the store about a week before my little "quick turn-around" on the Caribe. They produced lots of edible little potatoes. Must be "curing time" on the Caribe or somethin', shucks . . . David, these 2 Asian melons (Honda & Sun Jewel) are listed as hybrids. I just tasted a mystery melon from my garden at lunchtime. The vine came from a hill labeled "Honey Girl." At 1st, I thought these 3 small melons might be the seedless watermelons planted in the patch - they are that green! The plant didn't look like a watermelon so I must have been correct that all the seedless plants died in the Spring chill. I left the melons on the deck for a couple days figuring they weren't quite ripe. They were nearly just as green inside as out and had not the slightest resemblance, fragrance, nor taste to any Honey Girl, watermelon, nor anything else I've ever experienced! I think the hybridizers let something get past them. Heaven knows what this green melon vine is related to. I suspect that the intended male parent was left out of the equation. School system declares DS 'gifted' - now what?

Well, I just calmly asked DS when he got home about the math project, he started crying and said that he was afraid that if he didn't do well it would bring down his grade. I told him we'd email the teacher and ask, but I thought that this was an opportunity for extra credit, and that it wouldn't hurt his grade if he didn't do well. He agreed that it sounded interesting, and even after she emailed back that it would be graded, wouldn't tell us how much weight towards final it would be, he still thought he'd try it. We have never put much emphasis on grades, I don't know where he gets his anxiety and perfectionism from but as I said it's been from a very young age, well before school. But it's like anything he's afraid to do - once he tries it, and does well, it'll give him confidence. I told him if he doesn't do well on this project, he doesn't have to do any more "challenges" this year. I think DS did well on the tests and in school b/c we do take time to explain things to him (again from a young age), read to him (and now he reads by himself) all the time, and take the kids to places like the science museum and the art museum, not just "children's museums". Really I don't want to push him to take tests and do more work, but this was an opportunity to do a research project, gather data, analyze it, and draw conclusions from it - much more challenging and "real-world" than rote arithmetic. The teacher said that it would take the place of up to 2 nights' HW per week for the next 5 weeks, so it was not "extra" work piled on. My kids love learning and are definitely opinionated, but DS tends to be a bit "lazy" (maybe b/c he hasn't found his passion - except Pokemon?) and I'm just trying to challenge him to go beyond the bare minimum he needs to do in school - not that he does just "passing" work but it could easily slip into that as the coursework gets harder, if he doesn't get excited about *something*. If he never learns to study and research, what's he going to do in HS and college when he finds that he can't pass a test just by having done his HW up to that point? "Good enough" is good enough in some things, but there should be something that he can get passionate about (like when he was little and devoured the whole "100 Things You Should Know About..." series on his own). Maybe by extensions and modifications to the easy (boring - he never talks about school) classes he's taking now, he can *find* something to get excited about. Maybe not this year, but maybe in Jr High or HS? Maybe in a summer program? I don't know. I'm just afraid he's already gone on academic autopilot. He asked us to stop reading him bedtime stories when he was about 6-7. I have to screen a lot of the books in the Teen section of the library for him, b/c the content is too mature. But when I find a good book or series (he loves fantasy series) I get them for him. As I said, he found The Hobbit on his own, he read Narnia years ago, he's read Twain and T.H. White (was really into Merlin about 2-3 years ago). Occasionally I'll hand him a nonfiction book - he read A. Lincoln and Why Evolution is True this summer. He's still very interested in paleontology, archaeology, and astronomy, whenever I find an article in the WSJ on a new discovery or theory I point it out to him and sometimes we'll do research online to find out more. But it's not like he'll just pick up a nonfiction book on his own anymore. So I'm hoping that by requiring more research of him for his science and social studies classes, he can be motivated to explore more and maybe rekindle those interests (or find new ones) without me having to "find" interesting stuff for him. The kid is a walking encyclopedia - I don't think he forgets a single fact about nature or science or history once he's read it. It's just that "commitment to exploration" that's missing. And it's been creeping up on him for the past few years - seems like the longer he spends in public schools, the less interest and effort he puts into anything. When he was a toddler, preschooler, kindergartner, even 1st-2nd grade I'd say, he was just interested in *everything* and always wanted to find out "more". Now he seems apathetic about learning most of the time, unless DH or I point out something about a new scientific discovery and then help him research it. Most of the time he just wants to read (or re-read) fantasy books and play Gameboy. I hate that thing! My mom got him a used one at a yard sale last summer, then he begged us to let him use his own $ to buy a DS (but we gave it to him for Xmas instead), and now he takes it *everywhere* (except school). He plays it in the car on a 15-minute drive to go out to dinner, to my parents' house, etc. and plays it all weekend and nights after dinner, except for when he's reading. Of course I don't mind him reading LOTR, but I think he can stop re-reading Redwall and Warriors and other series that he read years ago and find something *new* and maybe a bit more advanced? I mean, I have my favorites I used to like to read over and over again (anything by Michener!) but I'd go a year or more before rereading a book - there were so many *new* books to read!

Maybe we need a support group for parents of 6th grade boys. ;o) I have one, too. Also a smart kid with organizational challenges. ;o) It would take a lot to get me to take away his sport. He plays roller hockey (the current sport, he likes to try new things). The NHL isn't going to knock down his door, but that's not what it's about. As an adolescent boy, he needs the physical release of energy. It would take a lot to get me take away sports from my other sons or DD, too, though. It is such a part of who they are that taking it away is more than a punishment, it's almost an attack on who they are. For all of them, it's the thing that can turn a bad day around and make them feel like themselves again, capable of meeting goals. It's not about training for a profession. My kids would be different people without their sports (one per kid). So far, the people in their lives b/c of the sports (teammates, coaches, other parents) are also positive parts of my kids' lives. For me to take it away would take repeated failure with no attempt to improve or a problem that took so much focus to correct that there was really no time for the sport (OK, like drugs). I would take sports away IF I truly believed the sport had become part of the problem, not as a punishment intende to motivate. I honestly don't think it would motivate my kids. I think it would increase anxiety and mood swings to lose the activity and self-esteem that comes from that outlet. It is their down time most days. So, my 6th grader. He has more potential than he uses and it frustrates me and his teachers every year. He is a goofball. He is not typically motivated by grades, either. He is not a kid who gets proud of an A. A or B, occassional C, doesn't matter to him. Actually, once when he had all As, he didn't want me to tell a friend of mine who would tell her 6th grader. He didn't want others to know ("I have a reputation to keep" he joked to me. Yeah, goofball.) But, he will feel bad about an F. Last fall he goofed his way to an F in math, a subject that he excells at and teachers have always called him a "math whiz." That crushed him. He goofed his way into, all on his own, didn't turn in assignments, refused to show his work no matter how many times the teacher told him one-on-one she would take off points for not showing work. He was disorganized, got 0s on "notebook checks" b/c he couldn't/wouldn't keep papers in a notebook the way the teacher wanted (she was trying to teach them organizational skills they need!). He had it in his head he could do it "his way," tried to reinvent the wheel, just b/c he didn't want accept the method given to him. In the end, he really had no method. Or he'd try something and not maintain it, we went through a dozen "systems" devised by him that didn't work. I sub in his school, in November I subbed for one of his teachers. If I hadn't, I would not have known he had science fair project due in 10 days (he'd known for a month) and that he hadn't done any of the planning assignments. That day, I went to every teacher and said "What does this kid owe you?" It was mostly math (one teacher had no idea what I was talking about, he had a high A with her, it's just too many balls to juggle sometimes). I sat him down at home and told him how I really feel. Disappointed. I said if I thought this was all you are capable of, I would be fine. But I know you can do great things, you are smart and I'm upset b/c you are letting yourself down. We both cried. ;o) He said "I just want the world to stop so I can catch up." Once he got a little behind and disorganized, he had no idea how to get back on top of it. I made him go to his teacher and ask what was missing and could he still turn it in (she let him for partial credit), I made *him* talk to her. I did send an email to her saying he wanted to talk to her about his grade, in case he got cold feet she could kind of create a "right time" for him. But I wanted him to learn from the experience that he CAN do something about it, that he can be the one to communicate with his teachers, to be his own voice. She didn't have to take the lead, he went to her and started the conversation. I was proud of him for that, I know it was hard. The teacher was more impressed and willing to work with him b/c he showed that initiative and concern for his own grade. So she let him do the make-up work and she and I stayed in contact. But he really turned around after sort of "hitting bottom" so to speak. He knows how bad that feels and doesn't want to go there again. It's also cute, the teacher intentionally assigned him a seat next to a very organized girl that DS will listen to without getting all... oh, junior high-ish. LOL. So she will remind him "put that paper away now before you lose it." I've seen her in the classroom with DS and other kids, too. She rolls her eyes and says "Oh, like this!" She's cracks me up. I don't think DS quite has crush on her, but he does not seem to mind her telling him what to do. He will put a paper away so that girl doesn't get on him for it. LOL Gook luck talking with the teacher. If you don't already plan to, make your DS sit in on that conference and take an active role in it.

There was another kid in the video whom I don't know. Obviously someone was holding the IPOD... it was my ss. I guess I wasn't clear. My ss was holding the IPOD videoing his step brother and the other kid tearing up the house. He was also videoing while they were blowing up pop bottles in the driveway. The only time someone else was holding the IPOD was when they were saying swear words and It's clear in the video who said them and who didn't. Yes, my ss acts VERY differently when he is with his mother. BUT... he wasn't the one knocking the couch over. It doesn't matter how we raise him at our house. If his bm lets him get away with different things at her house he's going to act different with her. Just like when he's on the phone with us, he's nice and respectful because he knows he'll get in deep crap if he isn't. With her he's rude and demanding. She lets him speak to her this way. There were multiple times she's called my dh because she couldn't get him to get out of bed to go to school. We have NEVER EVER had that problem with him. At her house he won't eat green beans or broccoli, at our house he eats them. Kids do what they are allowed to get away with with each parent. Just because he might act up with her does not mean that's because of how we raised him. She lets him get away with it, we don't. I'll clear this up.... even if my ss is helping tear up HER house.... that's because she's letting him get away with it. OUR house does NOT get torn up because there would be hell to pay. Kids test their boundaries, if they have none then they are out of control. That's one of the reasons I'm so nervous about this summer visit. Nothing we can do though until he gets into big trouble, she sends him home or till he gets back and we have to break through the attitude.

Good grief, baseball already! Where are you? There is 2 feet of snow on the ground here. No ball playing till about mid March. I loved it when my 2 girls played on summer softball leagues and the high school teams. I miss those days too!

that is cool, kat, to listen to the game via the computer, that otherwise you'd only get bits of later in conversation. Good luck to your DS' team this season. (I'm from Ohio.)

This rookie is my youngest, and the first to want to try baseball. He has a good swing, and throws well, but the catching part is still in progress. LOL! I am assured that is often the last skill kids get. We've been watching hockey for a while and this is DD's 2nd year competing in gymnastics. One has a black belt in tae kwon do, and they've meddled in soccer and basketball. I say my favorite sport to watch is the one my child is doing at the time! ;o) DD has a meet tomorrow. They are fun, but the older girls are more fun to watch. The younger girls all do exactly the same routine to exactly the same music... I hear the music in my sleep. But, they are still cute!

So, if you think of it, whisper "Make your squat-on" for my DD. ;o) It's the skill that is just giving her fits right now.

oh, yeah, catching! LOL can't tell you how many times you see the poor kids holding the glove up and the ball hitting the mitt and then bouncing up in to their face. Even when gettin hurt like that is still takes time for them to actually listen to the coach about holding the glove! LOL

Well I had a District Little League meeting this morning and a local meeting on Wednesday. I sit on both boards.
Baseball is the most important sport! Dontcha know...

Kat, that is sooooo cool that you can listen to Ry's game!!! That's good to know for when my egg head leaves the nest!

Stephanie, they are so fun at that age to watch. They want to do it right so bad..but it's alot to learn and figure out...takes a few years for most kids...Some, sadly never get it..

The big kid's been working out 3 days a week with his NEW (finally) HS coach..who happens to be an Alum..who happened to have been drafted into the MLB..but got hurt and had to leave...who happened to be a pitcher...so I'm so so grateful for the "real life" experience he has to offer the boys...and last week he had one of his college buddies, who's from Anacortes, who plays for the Wa Nationals...hang out with the boys and give them pointers.

I soooo know what you mean about worrying when your boy is on the mound..all three of mine pitch..and I pace..and pace...and pace...
Kee got to pitch last year against one of the Everett HS teams at the Aqua Sox field...He was soooooooo soooooo pysch'd! He did well from the report I got.

man, Terri! You need to tell us if they get to do that again!

Ds is batting .500 for all three games. WE lost the second game... were ahead by 8, but our pitching isn't very deep. Ry was DH in all three games.. we won the first, and the 3rd is on now. DH got on base last inning, and, well, lets just say, he's not the fastest one on the team! lol so we are behind, and even though they need his bat, they put in a pinch runner cause they needed him to score! and the guy that ran for him DID come in a score.. so he is done for the day. darn!~ lol

Kat, Hubby got to go to that game...and a few guys from his work came too...(since they live or work in Bothell)..
One or both of the younger two had a LL game..hence why I didn't get to go..

I'll remember to come "tell you" if he gets that rotation again.
For the few days before that game that he knew he was starting...he kept muttering "I'm gonna pitch on the same mound Felix has pitched on"...LOL He ended up going about 6 innings...but threw ALOT of pitches...over 80..I was a little peeved about that! He ended up pitching over 80 again only a few days later...and then couldn't barely throw a ball for 3 weeks! I was really peeved after the second game!!! oh and then about a week later the catcher got cleated across the hand..and had to come out..Kian went in and was told not to make the throw to second...Yeah like that's gonna happen...He ended up having to "make the throw" twice...and he was dead on..but it was VERY painful!

I'm going to have a "little" talk with the new coach.. Those pitching situations are NOT to happen again!

They had their preseason meeting for Baseball..one of the "slots" was what position do you play..Kian wrote "all"..the new coach pulled him aside at a work out and said..what do you mean all...Kian said I can play all the spots (doesn't happen to much that kids can do that) He's not that great at 2nd because he's got a hell of an arm..and easily over throws..and he doesn't like to "chase" stuff down in outfield...so the Coach says..okay if I was going to pay you to play what position would it be..Pitcher was Kees reply...Okay good...that's what I wanted to hear...But likely he'll play 1st when not pitching, because our 1st baseman is out this year, he dislocated his shoulder AGAIN.
But he's a great catcher too.

GS decided instead of Little League, he'd go for Middle School team. He tried out and didn't make it. They said he was TOO LITTLE!
Asked him if he told them he was pitcher for two years and AllStar every year. duh to them!
