Kitchen Layout w/corrections - comments please

Yesterdays posting was drawn incorrectly. Does this layout work? We are a family of three, two cooks. The island will be used for breakfast/lunches and homework. Look forward to comments.

I'm taking a quick look, and I didn't see yesterday's post.

My only thought is that this is a big kitchen, is there any possibility that you could do a prep sink in the island, on the fridge side? My kitchen is somewhat similar, and I am amazed at how much better the work flow in our kitchen is with a 2nd sink.
We even had company the other day (who are considering moving and were watching our "kitchen in action", and they also commented on this).

Thank you beekeeper and your kitchen is BEAUTIFUL. Would it make sense to move the microwave drawer to the right of the cooktop w/prep sink either on the island fridge side or would it work on the oven wall at the corner (easy access from the dining area and family room)?

Could the range go on the same wall as the sink? I think that could give you a more logical work flow, better prep space, and also, of course, it would make it easier and cheaper to vent the range. Speaking of the sink, a lot of people here have commented in various threads that unless you wash all your dishes by hand, a single-bowl sink is a lot more useful than a double-bowl sink. I agree, having lived with both. If you went with, say, a 25" or 27" single-bowl sink (which is LARGE--it's a lot of sink space to have; compare it to the dinky 14"-15" bowls you'd get on a 33" double-bowl)... anyway, with a 25" or 27" single-bowl, you would have a lot more room on that sink wall to put your range. And that would create a very logical work flow: food comes out of fridge, goes to sink if it needs to be washed (and to counter between sink and range if it doesn't), then on to the range to be cooked. If you have guests and want to talk with them while you cook, then food would be prepped on the island--for most people the prepping part takes longer than the actual cooking part, in the sense that you don't just stand there facing the range for half an hour. A lot of cooking time is just "leaving the food on the stove" time--you don't have to stand there watching pasta boil, for example--so it can be more sociable to have your prep space facing or beside guests than to have your range facing or beside them. So this layout would give you a lot more prep space on the island, as well as a more logical workflow. If this idea intrigues you, you would probably want to put the DW on the fridge wall (or if you have a basement so the plumbing is easy, maybe even in the island). Putting it on the fridge wall would mean moving that trash drawer and the cabinet beside it, but the trash drawer would be more useful if it were closer to the sink and/or range anyway. (Basically, trash is more useful the closer it is to where you prep or where you clean up.) And the cabinet beside it could go into the island.

Thanks! I appreciate alternative ideas since you don't know what you don't know! :) Pantry cabinets - I will see what kind of other options I have! I am replacing a pantry closet (34" wide x 24" deep), so I would like to have at least comparable storage space. I actually like the look of cabinets that come down to the counter as well. I'm just not sure it will provide me the same amount of storage. But I will look into it! Cabinets on side of window/sink -- once I get the estimate for my counter-height window, I can revisit the upper cabinets. The width of the window may change. 15" Drawer - I think the drawing may have been too small. The smallest drawer is a 19" drawer to the right of the cooktop. I went this route to get 30" uppers to the left/right of the hood. My other cabinet layout options had a 12" upper (along with 24" cabs to the left/right of the hood). I thought the 30" uppers was a better option??? I'm struggling with the cabinet layout though!! Beverage frig - my husband and I drink a lot of soda. We have 4 12 packs in the frig at any time. Since we are going with a counter-depth frig, we decided to move the soda to the bev frig. I think this might be nice when we have parties too. The people in the family room can just go to the bev frig for drinks (and put their cans in the recycle bin that's right there as well), rather than walking back to the main frig. Thanks for providing a full floor plan, however you didn't answer my questions about whether the window could move or a wall be removed. I realize the footprint can't change but perhaps the above structural changes are possible. I went ahead and drew up an idea based on that possibility. I moved the fridge to the top wall, shifted DW and sink over, widened the window and reduced the depth of the wall next to the fridge so that the fridge doors will be able to open wide enough to pull out fridge drawers. The range stayed where it was. I added a 36" pull-out pantry cab to its right, eliminating the bottom of the U. That move plus removing the wall at the lower end of the opening to the LR, allowed me to create a longer island, which made space for a larger prep sink. The size of sink that you'd be able to put in a 15" cab is a bar sink, not really useful for prep work, much less draining a pot of pasta. The longer island and deep curve should provide enough room for 3 stools at the counter. I did a little organizational labeling for you but feel free to change things as you need to fit your family's needs. I also shifted the entry from the foyer to the left, directing the view from the front door towards the LR windows and backyard. The aisle between the bottom end of the aisle and wall is 36", which is narrow than recommended (42" aisles for 1-butt kitchens, 48" aisles for 2-butt kitchens) but since there's only one narrow cab opening into this aisle, I decided it was likely workable. It wasn't until I was ready to post this plan that I realized I forgot to allow for a MW. You don't show one in your plan but I assume you intend to have one. I'll answer question 3 first: The first thing I see is that the ovens and the fridge are on a wall by themselves and you have nowhere to put things you take out of the oven or the fridge. The closest counter is almost 5' away on the wall where the cooktop is. The sink counter is 9' away. Without a counter, you will be making lots of needless trips back and forth to put stuff down. Also think about having to carry a large turkey, etc across the room in a hot pan, or carrying basting utensils, etc for the oven. Is there any way you can move the wall oven down and put a 24" base cabinet between the wall oven and fridge? That will give you a spot to put grocery bags, or take out items from the fridge or even just put pot holders down when cooking in the oven. Or if that's not doable, how about doing what I did with my kitchen and put the wall oven under the cooktop and add a counter where the oven is now? Specific Questions: 1) Are there too many upper cabs around the hood? 8 doors!!! All that dark wood! Should we remove some, change them, use glass/panels in all or only some? I was worried about the same thing in mine so put glass panels in my end cabinets. You do have the window and the range hood to break up the space, so I don't think you need them. I think you'll be fine the way the cooktop wall is. 2) Does the fridge/ oven wall protrude too much into the space thereby affecting the symmetrical feel of the cooktop wall? No, you won't even notice it. However to follow your symmetry I think I'd prefer to see the small cabinet next to the mw switched with the mw. This way the two small panels are on the ends.

Oh, this is far better. I'd still want a prep sink where you show the microwave. Your fridge to sink to prep to stove is a long path the way it is. On that corner, it would serve you in many ways...Not only for prep, but close to the island seating, helpful when baking, and nice if you ever have a buffet. Either as a water source, or a place to put ice and serve chilled items.

Have you not considered an island stovetop? I wonder if you'll be happy with that trip from the refrigerator...

Definitely put your prep sink on the island where you have the MW placed. Don't put it on the oven wall. When you put the prep sink there also put a pull-trash beside it.

You want it to form part of the work triangle between the range and the fridge. The way it is planned now you will probably be prepping between the main sink and range and it will be a bit of trek, especially walking right by the range if someone else is working there, to get to the fridge. PUtting a prep sink in the island will tighten up the triangle.

Depending on how often and what you use the MW for - what about putting it under the counter beside the double ovens.

Thanks for responses.

Okay - adding a prep sink to the island fridge side. Does it make sense to move microwave draw next to the prep sink on fridge side? If the island is squared off there should be room for two on the fridge and two on the end. Make sense?

Yes, that makes sense about squaring off the island and the seating. I think, though, that a better place for the microwave might be on the fridge end of the stove run...Either at the bottom of the upper or in the base cabs. Then others can use it, but it's also handy for the cook.

I totally agree with Blfenton...Sink where you have the microwave and a pullout trash next to it. I vote for it facing your main sink. We have ours that way and it serves the prep area, cooking area, and is handy for scraping plates when filling the dishwasher.

Also, you have the room to consider making your perimeter counters 30" deep, which can be nice. Some use deeper cabinets, but on our deeper run, we just pulled the cabinets out from the wall and put a cleat against the wall for the countertops.
