Sliding doors for main entrance?

The entrance to our home is very cramped, with a coat closet and a stairway right in your face as you enter. I'm thinking of eliminating that door entirely (replacing part of it with a window), and using an existing set of sliders as the main entrance instead. The sliders in question are on the same face of the house as the front door, and we don't use them much, as there are 2 more sets of sliders on the adjacent face of the house, which is a more natural place to use for going onto the deck or out to the yard.

There is currently no walkway, stairs, or overhang at either the front door or the sliders, so we have to create an entry sequence in any event. Also, we really need storage space, so we want to create an exterior entrance hall/mudroom in any event.

So--since we have a good bit of work to do to make a proper entrance to our home, is there any reason not to change the entranceway so that a new front door opens into an entranceway/mudroom, and then one enters the home itself via sliding doors??

I hope you can get a picture of this set-up. If you have any questions, please ask!
