Narrow Living Room: Furniture Layout
Comments (21)As usual I agree with groveraxle. Making a natural walkway behind the sofa allowing traffic to flow outside the main living area is always preferable to placing furniture against the wall. Longest tv console possible gives more storage for toys too. The tv between the windows eliminates some of the glare while giving someone sitting on the couch a view outside along with viewing the tv. If you were to use a sectional or more seating I would form the L so that the other side faces the front of the house. That will shield to a point the play area from the front door hiding kids clutter as the first thing you see When you walk in the door....See MoreCouch Help in Narrow Family Room
Comments (26)There are mounts that lower tv down over fireplace to eye level, for comfortable viewing. I recommend this one. There is also a motorized version. https://www.dynamicmounting.com/product/down-and-out-manual-mount/ Your sectional placement was fine to begin with. I do not recommend putting a sofa, much less a sectional, with back to windows, if it can at all be avoided. I look at placement from an Eastern Feng Shui perspective, and sofa with back to windows is not desirable. Many people do it. Folks often take the wall where the sofa should be and throw a tv on it - and they sit in all kinds of contorted, uncomfortable positions so they can watch tv. But there is a better way. Also, Eastern Feng Shui is not fond of floating sofa arrangements, either. And floating a sofa with back to entries is not desirable. Much of Feng Shui is based on nature and common sense. And you see how these principles operate in every day activities. For example, have you noticed how many people - and particularly men - do not like sitting with their back to entries in restaurants and other establishments? Same principles are operating - whatever you want to call it. Also, quite frankly, trying to float a huge sectional in what is already a narrow room - just doesn’t seem like a plan to me. The room is narrow, but your sectional was working fine where it was. However, if you want to float a sofa or sectional facing the fireplace, you need something on a smaller scale; and if you float a sofa, put a sofa table in back of sofa to anchor it, as well as provide a better view from behind. I would not do the sofa with back to windows, period. It’s an uncomfortable seating arrangement and closes in the room. In terms of your current furnishings, I would leave sectional where you had it originally and bring in a couple of swivel chairs, scaled for the space, instead of the current chairs. And get the tv mount I recommended above. The mount lowers as well as angles the tv....See MoreSomewhat narrow Living/Dining Room Layout help
Comments (2)Your rectangle is 18' 10" wide and about 24' long ? You'll have more options if you put your tv on a portable stand rather than hanging it on the wall or set atop a console. Then you could angle it in the corner and face your sofa toward the slider with one end of the sofa against an end table against one of the walls to create a room divider. You might invest in some graph paper for drawing the room to scale -- or print it out drawn to scale -- and then invest in some heavier card stock to cut out the size and shape of each piece of furniture you already have so you can move the pieces around on the floor plan without lifting furniture (and/or invest in sliders). A sectional limits the options for furniture placement and, if any part of it is stained or damaged then you're needing to replace a lot of seating or live with it....See MoreHow to layout a long narrow living room with a fireplace?
Comments (5)It's a lovely room with great furnishings except for one glaring problem--TV over fireplace. Solution: --Move your credenza to the wall where the white desk is. Put your TV over it. --Move art to fireplace. --Sell bay window seating bench Craiglist or FB Marketplace or put at the end of a bed for blankets in one of the bedrooms. --Move white desk in front of window. Put ottomans/or current desk seating underneath desk. (If this is entryway, then it's a useful spot for mail and key baskets/bowls.) --Get two comfortable leather or upholstered MCM chairs up on wood legs that match coffee table base to face TV (desk in bay window will be behind chairs). Choose a color from your art for upholstery. If you put ottomans under desk instead of those stools, you can pull them out in front of TV watching chairs as needed. (Alternatively, you can find a mate to your blue chair, move them to where I'm suggested new chairs would be. Both would face TV with maybe a small side table between them. There. Done. (Unless I'm not understanding where entryway is.) Without TV on fireplace, you can move sofa forward to create a walkway behind it as you show in one of your photos....See Morecelticmoon
