List of best prices - chicken, turkey, ham?

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could share some info on the best prices they regularly find for cuts of meat and poultry. My family has always lived on skinless, boneless chicken, so I don't have any pricepoints in mind for other meats.

I know it will vary by region - but I'm sure it will help me.

For example - is this a good deal?

Whole frying chicken - $.59/lb

I'd really like some ideas on price for whole hams (just plain, not honey) and some whole turkeys and just the turkey breast.

I am CERTAIN this will vary enormously by region. I am in Los Angeles county where food prices are going through the sky and getting higher every day! I buy most things, especially produce, meats and poultry when they are loss leaders at the local markets and stock up. On Tuesday I purchased 2 sale priced Honeysuckle White turkey breasts for .99/lb. London broil was $1.59/lb. This week fresh chicken breasts (not the boneless,skinless ones) in the value size package are .99/lb. Whole chickens are advertised at .89/lb., but last week they were selling for .67/lb. Boneless sirloin pork roasts are advertised at $2.99/lb. Hams are only on sale around Easter and Christmas. They currently sell for anywhere from 1.69/lb. to 2.29/lb. depending on brand. Ground beef with 20% fat is selling for 1.79/lb. for a value pack size of 3 lbs. or more. Boneless cross rib roast is 1.99/lb. It isn't cheap to eat even when everything is sale priced. I live in the vegetable basket of the U.S. and not the meat and dairy part of the country, which is hard to believe that when you see navel oranges selling for $2.49/lb. and I live on what was once an orange orchard!!!!!

Here in my area 59 cents per pound would be sale price and good. I live in a small town with four major markets and another one on it's way so they are very competitive. I too try to stick to what is on sale. I bought 2 fresh picnic butts for $1.49 per pound and have them both roasted already. I also bought a large 85% lean ground beef $1.59 per lb, a 6 lb bag of frozen boneless chicken breasts for $6 and some change. I also bought a large package of store brand Italian sausage.

In our saturday paper, we get one of our sale papers and I noticed they have shank portion hams for 89 cents per pound..that is a really good buy here so I am going to buy a couple at least..roasting chicken on sale this week for 79 per pound..gotta get a couple of those too. I need some seafood/fish but haven't seen any good buy yet..will watch the other papers.

Thanks for clearing that up. (Note to self, bigger freezer or consider...pressure power!) I went to the link but see that this recipe includes actual meat jarred up with the broth. "Chicken or turkey: Place large carcass bones with most of meat removed in a large stockpot, add enough water to cover bones, cover pot, and simmer 30 to 45 minutes or until remaining attached meat can be easily stripped from bones. Remove bones and pieces, cool broth, strip meat, discard excess fat, and return meat trimmings to broth. Reheat to boiling and fill jars, leaving 1-inch headspace. " I myself simmer turkey/chicken bones with a few veggies and herbs for a good 3 hours (ham hocks for maybe 4). There is little actual meat in the pot. The resulting (mostly) clear stock then jells up overnight in the fridge. At that point I usually freeze it. It would seem to me that a 30-45 minutes simmer as indicated above would most likely result in a really 'weeny' broth with little substance. Has anyone jarred up a meatless broth? I'm terrible with remembering the price of things, but I did just stock up because split chicken breasts were on sale for $1.29/lb. I almost exclusively buy BSCB because I cut them into chunks and use them for pad thai, put them in salads, make a few different pasta dishes with them, etc. I also grill them to have with salad or veggies just for me and hubby on nights it's just us eating. But it's been so long since I cooked chicken with the bone in, I wanted to get some and the price was right. I also bought a couple packages of leg quarters because hubby and son prefer dark meat, while daughter and I prefer the breast. Anyway, boy did they have so much more flavor grilled with the bone!! I took some of the skin off to avoid the fat and calories, but I did leave a little bit on and that added so much more flavor as well. And they didn't dry out the way the boneless often does. I don't bother with wings much as they're too much fat and skin. And I rarely buy a whole chicken - if I do buy one, I buy it already cut up into pieces. Most of the time I buy halved breasts and leg quarters. My BIL used to be a meat wholesaler and altho he doesn't do it for a living any longer, he still has all his "connections" so every now and then I'll buy 10 pounds or more thru him. I usually am buying steak tips and/or ribs and shrimp at the same time, so I can't really say what I'm paying individually for each. Yes, the first time I suggested lowering price to my agent -- when we had been on the market a few weeks and had had many showings and a few second showings -- she said I should wait. So I waited several weeks -- it was actually about this time of year -- and then when I did reduce it by then it was well into June and the spring market was starting to cool. What are search brackets in your MLS? If your house was below $475k would that put you into a new search bracket? Every market is different but when we were in the higher bracket we did get lots of showings but no offers. It wasn't just us -- almost everything was selling slowly. Look at sales in your price range/area? Are houses really selling or are there tons more houses on the market than sales? How long is it taking most houses to sell? And can you see a difference in prices for those that sell quickly? In our area, sales were slow and the houses that sold were either priced at what seemed like low prices or were taking 2 years to sell. We didn't want to wait 2 years so we lowered the price.

Are you grinding your own turkey or purchasing ground turkey burger to use? Something that might make a difference is the grind (fine - coarse) of the meat you are using, or try grinding turkey thighs yourself (thighs have more flavor, imo, and more like the color of pork sausage). For seasoning, you might try some of the offerings from Penzeys. I like the Breakfast Sausage Seasoning (https://www.penzeys.com/catalog/product.aspx?catalog=24&product=606), but I make a mild sausage since I can't eat things high in fructans (onions, garlic, etc. - so avoid mixtures with those in them). If you scroll the Penzeys page down you will see some other sausage mixtures. We also have a local meat processing plant that has some good spice mixtures for sausage. What I found we like is using a coarse grind of low-fat turkey breast. After I get it all mixed and flavored for sausage, I let the flavors meld in the refrigerator for a few hours, then I cook it in a scrambled fashion, not patties. The cooked scrambled turkey burger sausage can be used as a topping on pizza or added to egg dishes, and even reheated in a pan to serve with breakfast. I always keep it in user-friendly amounts in the freezer. Hubby liked it scrambled, but not as patties. Even the Honeysuckle Turkey Sausage he liked scrambled better than patties, so scrambled it is, if it gets him to eat it ;-). -Grainlady

Hi Kelly,
I think, based on your email addy, we are shopping at the same stores!? I'm in Spencerport, NY...therfore, Tops, Wegmans, Sam's Club etc.
Each week the stores rotate the specials but if you can stand the WalMart in Chili...the prices are the best for meats..or Sam's Club. If Wegmans or Tops run a SPECIAL...stock up (Buy 1 get 1 Free)...
I personally cannot stand the Wegman Sale Flyer I find it ridiculously disorganized!
