proper freezer temperature

we just received a hand-me-down chest freezer. we hooked it up this weekend but are not sure what the proper temp should be? we have a thermometer in it and it is reading 2 degrees F. is this okay?

Zero is recommended....but 2 degrees could be an inaccurate thermometer.

i have a whirlpool fridge freezer, it runs constsantly, and the freezer reading on the front will not go below 18, and the fridge is warm, could anyone help me solve the problem What should the correct emps show?

I would do some research. Its hard to believe the factory spec is 38-40 at its lowest setting or is this at a medium setting? I would have thought 32-34 s/b very achieveable. I had a nightmare of an experience with a fridge. The repair guy would come, look at it and say declare it working correctly. After several months and as many service calls, I finally told them food was spoiling (milk curdling well b4 expiration etc) and I had had enough. Same tech came back and really started digging into it and found that all of the vents except for the little pencil sized hole for the crisper were left blocked from the factory. Apparently they block them during construction and then remove the blocks only they forgot this time. Needless to say, the only cool air getting through to the fridge was through the crisper vent. Once unblocked, the fridge will freeze food, as it should, on its lowest setting and keeps drinks extremely cold (33-34 degrees)at moderate settings. So, after 4 months, a lot of spoiled food and arguably a few upset stomachs, the fridge cooled properly. That was but one of the issues with that lemon. Make??? Maytag. Manufacturer??? Whirlpool I believe. Manufacturer of Amana??? Again, Whirlpool. Good news is that they did fix it.

Re cookie sheets, it's the particular size and shape. One of the pros of my column freezer is that it takes the baking sheets that come with my oven. Some baking sheets won't fit anything. You can always find (or alter!) sheets to actually fit in the cooler. With an upright, clearing a single shelf for the baking sheet is easy. I have a pair of shelves that are only about 5-6" apart anyway, and I try to plan to have space, so I can just move a few things around. With drawers, you'd have to give over a whole drawer, at which point taking the sheet in and out might be an issue and you might want to put some kind of vertical lift handles on your sheet. If you put it on top of other stored frozen things, you have to make sure they're level enough, and insulate them somehow (maybe just putting in a layer of newspapers in a bag (previously chilled in fridge) ahead of time (or kept in the freezer for the purpose), so the room temperature sheet won't warm up what's it's stacked on. It can be done. Or maybe you have several quarter sheets and use a stacker in a corner. Or maybe you just don't worry about freezing meatballs and the like or put them in a container rather than a vacuum sealed bag. You can make anything work. Just offering up a potential con, not a deal breaker. :)

I keep a thermometer in two refrigerators and both their freezer compartments, one in my upright freezer. Refrigerators run between 36-38F, their freezers set to 0 although the KitchenAid in the kitchen will often be 5F, and the freezer compartment in the garage refrigerator as warm as 10F....but I only keep extra ice there and occasionally something very short term. My freezer holds steady at 0. Long term storage of food is recommended best at -10F to -5F up to 0 F, no warmer. BTW - I keep a thermometer in the oven too. Industry standard used to be 'off 25 degrees either way is acceptable' (it may still be the standard although I haven't worked in an appliance store in decades now ;0)), enough to make a difference when baking.

According to what they taught us when I went through refrigertions school the freezer compartment on a domestic rerefrigerator/freeze is classified as a short term storage facility and the freezer temp should be maintained at 0 to 20degF

A domestic deep freeze, whether chest type or upright is classified as a "long term storage facility" and the temp should be maintained from +10 to -20degF.

If you have a thermometer that you are unsure of you can easily test it. Fill a small container with equal parts of ice & water and allow it to set a few minutes to stabilize. The temperature of the water will then remain exactly at 32degF until the ice is melted. If you are using a small dial type probe thermometer look on the underside of the dial and you will see a hex nut on the top of the probe where it attaches to the back of the dial.
You can actually calibrate that type of thermometer by inserting the probe in the ice water and allow it about a minute to stabilize. If the needle is not on zero you can hold that nut with a small wrench or pliers and turn the dial head until the needle is centered over the zero.
