Frig/Freezer Columns vs. Subzero side by side?
Comments (3)We have 30''/18'' Therm columns. For us, the SZ vs Therm decision was driven by appearance--we wanted totally integrated units that would disappear between our wall cabinets. The large overhead grill in the SZ made them unworkable. You look at a "fully integrated" SZ, see the grill, and say "oh there's a SubZero." You look at our cabinets and unless you know where, you can't find the Therms. It's an affectation, but one what works well with our moderately contemporary kitchen. Otherwise, they perform well, albeit with some minor concerns to date about reliability, see my other posts on that topic....See MoreMiele Columns vs. Sub-Zero Bi48SD Fridge/Freezer
Comments (29)Thanks Marcydc. Changing the first filter was hard because the installer used big honkin' working man muscles to tighten it so tight we needed tools to unscrew it (I had psychologist man muscles working on it, but he needed pliers for leverage). The real difficulty, however, is changing the filter, and fixing the filter code, without warming up the freezer. After my third change I've learned a few things: The book says that when the filter light first comes on it's just a warning, and when the light changes state (starts or stops blinking--can't remember which), it's time to change. Tech help told me I should change as soon as it comes on, and that the trouble I've had resetting the filter indicator comes from letting it go to the end. In that case, it has to be changed in program mode rather than customer mode. The other thing I've learned is not to even try to reset right after changing the filter. My unit won't go into customer mode if it's even a little warm, and if it loses too much cool, it won't go into program either. It's basically trying to say, "Shut the door, idiot!!!" It's easy enough to change the filter and wait a number of hours. I always set aside some ice, because you're supposed to throw away the first 24 hrs. worth, so waiting another 6-12 hours is no biggie. But what defines "hard"? For me, it's the procedure to get into customer mode or program mode. It's arcane in a way that only a German engineer could like. It's like looking for easter eggs in a computer game. I can't hold the instructions and do the routine at the same time. That's "hard"....See MoreSubzero vs Thermador refrigerator/freezer columns
Comments (2)Thermador has been at it far longer than subzero so I normally recommend them (or miele or gaggenau which come out of the same factory). They have been very reliable and are well priced. The only instance where the subzero has an advantage is the install with regards to the hinge. If you are installing in a tight space, the hinge on a subzero opens within the width of the unit. So you can put it up against a wall or hinge to handle. In the therm/miele/gag units the hinge is articulating and opens wider than the body of the unit by about 2"...See More2 drawer freezer option? KitchenAid vs Bosch? Which fridge to choose?
Comments (3)I ended up with the Bosch. To a great extent it came down to the look. (I know, many would belittle that reasoning.) I have an appliance wall that has the fridge, 15" landing space, a Bosch Induction range, 15" landing space and a Wolf Steam Oven. The handles on Kitchenaid looked like the lat-pull down bar at my gym, ugly in my opinion, and I didn't love the look of so much variation from appliance to appliance to appliance. (I also have a Bosch dishwasher which I love; it actually has a pocket type pull, no handle. Getting the three Bosch appliances maximized my rebate, which was a bonus but didn't really affect the decision.) The refrigerator is okay. I don't like it as much as my old Amana (which I think at the time was the same as the Jenn-Air french door fridge). Because I have a chest freezer I don't really need the second drawer for longer term storage; given the choice I'd prefer a single drawer. I'm also getting used to the loss of storage with the counter depth. To compensate a have a beverage cooler for the beer, wind and tonic which took up at least one shelf in the Amana. It's a trade-off. I'd probably do the same thing again, at least as long as the handles are the same. (You can't fully "appreciate" them unless you see them in person.)...See MoreHeather N
