Advice on new driveway?

I'm not sure where to post this query.

We are renovating a 1920s brick two storey house in Columbia, SC, and want to put a new driveway in. It will extend into the back yard and join a nice pool deck. We want it to look good, to be relatively smooth and good for grandchildren to play on and grandparents to roll garbage cans over. We rejected the idea of a "tabby" style surface, which is popular in SC lowcountry (the oyster shell look is interesting, but impractical for us).

What can you recommend for a good looking, not outrageously expensive, durable, practical driveway surface. If poured concrete, what are the various ways to make this look interesting and attractive? Coloring, staining, scoring, stamping? I'm new to this and eager to learn more.

Thanks, Don
