Can you 'boil' frozen hamburger?

i'm one of those converted "boil the hamburger" cooks - talk about easy!!! however, i wonder if you could do it with packages of frozen hamburger?

Do you mean thaw it out first or just boil it? I think my MIL throws it into a pan with water and lets it cook apart and then when the water evaporates all out of the pan they brown it in the pan. Don't know if this is what you were wondering about exactly, but it's an idea.

hi lesley - i meant can you just throw it - frozen - into the pot of water to cook it like you would unfrozen hamburger :)
when i brown it in a frying pan, i usually throw it in frozen and keep turning it over, scraping off the cooked bits as they cook. but i was thinking it would be faster/easier to boil it :)

Sure you can! I wouldn't use them in things like Habanero Gold where you'd want "pretty pieces" of pepper that show, but in anything cooked, I wouldn't hesitate a minute! I freeze my cilantro for my salsa because the darned stuff is ready months before the tomatoes and peppers! Frozen hot peppers are also good for regular cooked dishes (not canned) like enchiladas, soups, spaghetti sauce, etc. Enjoy them! Deanna

Just a suggestion - large cutting board over washtub? We got one from ikea that had a counter edge lip (so it couldn't be pushed off). Our very long time in purgatory (turned out to be 7-8 months when originally guestimated as 2-4 weeks) was mostly over the cold months, so zero hamburgers here. Vegiburgers, on the other hand, microwave fairly well. Rotisserie chicken, bagged salads, frozen veg, occasionally nice entrees from nice delis that just needed reheat, carryout, eat out. I got a lot of experience in everything you can make in one pot at a time. Stews, braises, etc. I had a portable induction plate that was a life saver. So, think of the easiest way to make meals. Buy bottled dressing, premixed salad and forgive yourself later. Cook the entire bag of potatoes and refrigerate the leftovers so you can just heat in the micro on demand. Maybe think of it more as camping... And consider that the cost of an electric griddle or whatever you miss having most is less than dinners out. I kept staring at this thing from camp chef. dh kept telling me it was for outdoors - introduced a little bit of sense for which he got some rather pithy stares. Both the slight fantasies that you can buy something that will give you the ability to be normal during the remodel and the raw edges of stress poking out in unaccustomed ways might also need forgiveness.

There is no such thing as medium-well with no pink. No pink means well done. And well done does not mean dried out nor does it mean cooked to leather texture or black throughout as some people I know insist on cooking it. Coincidently they like to rant that well done is dried out... (sigh) Personally I like a touch of char and crispness on some of the outside but not so it's completely burned. I like it best at medium well, slight pink, but still hot enough that it will actually continue cooking a bit, even if it procedes to well done. I like it cooked in bacon fat and or butter but few places will do that. Sometimes I like a thick burger and other times I like a thin burger. The bun (preferably wheat or better yet, multigrain) should be toasted and I like a couple very thin slices of red onion a dab of mayo/salad dressing or Ranch dressing along with a touch of BBQ sauce or maybe Heinz 57. A lot depends on the mood and the accompanying dishes. Sometimes cheese, sometimes not. Sometimes topped with pepperoni or ham, and sometimes I just want burger and bun! And you can keep your preformed frozen meatloaf patties they pass off as hamburger patties. Especially the ones they make an odd wavy shape to simulate hand formed. Getting a burger, well, any meat cooked past medium without being overcooked isn't easy, much like getting eggs cooked hard without being rubbery. There's a very fine line between right and overdone. A cook with talent can do it but unfortunately there's not a lot of people who really have talent cooking at these places. There's also a fear of food poisoning so they want to cook it to cover for poor food handling methods. Sad, really. Here is a link that might be useful: How would you like that?

Been doing PBBs (peanut butter burgers) for a long time. For some reason I tend to do it more when I reheat one. Not sure why. I'll occasionally put peanut butter on a hot dog too. An old roommate got me going on that. For burgers, it really varies a lot. One bar I like to go to has a nice thick hand-patted patty and I usually like to go minimal and enjoy the good quality meat. Bun untoasted is a big detraction and I don't care what kind of bun it is. I'll occasionally use a bagel or a toasted English muffin at home. Another bar has a great burger too but there I tend to get a little bit of raw onion on it. They have a special now, 1/2# burger and (good crisp) fries for $5 and a 3/4# for $6. I like a couple extremely thin slices of onion rather than a thick slab. I just like the way it crackles apart and the flavor seems to spread better. Occasionally some bacon but admittedly, I often pick it off and eat it as an appetizer! Occasionally some cheese but only a Swiss, pepper jack, mozzarella or provalone. No cheddar and absolutely no plastic American cheese. For a run of the mill place, I like mayo/salad dressing, BBQ sauce. No pickles, and only occasionally tomato IF and only if it's fresh and "beefy". Not these stringy things they pass off as tomatoes at so many places. I'll usually pass on the lettuce, but I will go for some slaw on there at times. I kind of like the "onion straws" on a Red Robin burger at times. There used to be a restaurant chain around here called Mr. Steak that had a lunch special called the "Olde English". Open face burger on an English Muffin, onion, BBQ sauce and swiss cheese. Fantastic. I miss that place. For a drive through, I like a Baconator and Sonic has a double bacon burger that's pretty darn good too. So there's not a one way for a burger with me. And after the lesson learned at the Five Disappointments, I really appreciate a good burger and fries so much more lately! LOL

I throw the frozen hamburger into a pan with water, not enough to cover it and put the lid on and let it go. Just as with frying, it's a good idea to turn it and stir it. Once it is all loose, I let it boil well to make sure it's cooked thru and then drain.

I throw frozen hunks of hamburger in the water all the time, because I don't plan meals ahead of time usually. What I want to know, is what are boiled hamburgers?

Try using the water off your vegetables, tomato juice, or broth in your boiled burger. When you chill the meat the fat comes to the top and it can be skimmed, that's if you don't want to throw out the liquid, otherwise just drain as usual. It changes the flavor too.

I am with Michelle on this one. I tried to find the original instructions on boiling the chopped meat but was not able to. Could someone please explain the boiling chopped meat? Thanks!

I have boiled the hamburger several times, as it is very quick. Last time I threw it in frozen, and stirred it up a bit as it cooked. I skim the fat off the top, and am ready to add it to my recipe. It doesn't change the taste of the dish, just makes it quicker.

OK here it is. Instead of the messy job of frying ground beef you just put a pot of water on to boil and add any spices (ony if you want to) and when it reaches a boil, toss the hamburger in and cook it just like you were throwing it in a soup pot...When it loses it's color and looks done, drain off the liquid, cool and package to use in tacos, enchiladas, stuffed peppers, casseroles etc etc etc. You can save the cooking water , skim the fat and save it for soup or stew.
