SE FL Get-together (Picture heavy!)

YAY! What a fun day it was yesterday!

The visit with Nita and Vivian and Marion was absolutely delightful! The weather was nice, the restaurant was cozy, and the company couldn't be beat :-) I *think* I got my fix of Nita hugs for the year, but we'll have to see :-P.

I brought along my Aunt Lexie, picked up Marion, and away we went, zooming down US1.

We got to the restaurant

to find not only Nita but her oh-so-sweet Aunt Vivian

So we moseyed on inside, and sat down to enjoy ourselves

The tables had the cutest centerpieces, and most of us (4 out of 5) had the Crab Quesadillas (in case anyone's wondering) which were fabulous

For about 1/10 of a second it appeared that we might be bored

...so Aunt Vivian regaled us with a salty tale about ribbons and unmentionables...

it went over well :-)

All in all, a good time was had by all, and I can't wait to (hopefully!!!) do it again next year.

Though we were there for 3 hours, it seemed far too short. Carol and Margaret, you were with us in spirit, I promise, and quite a few of you here at the KT should have heard your ears ringing (all good, I swear!). I can't think of a better way to have spent my afternoon, thanks gals, for getting together :-)

Sumognat You are on the right path. I live in Delray Beach. The thrips here are 11 months a year. I have discovered the hard way that if you spray chemicals for disease you will have major thrip problems. It kills the beneficial insects that eat the thrips. On the other hand if you don't spray for disease the roses are a diseased mess. So it's a pick your problems situation. I have discovered that if you go with old roses that are disease resistant you can have beautiful roses without disease or without insect damage, atleast it is mimimal. I would highly recommend the china rose, Vincent Godsiff. It stays small and blooms it's head off 12 months a year. My Don Juans, grafted on fortuniana are about the only modern roses that haven't bit the dust with disease. Best of luck.

Wow, sumognat! You have your own horse manure factory!!! When I dig my beds, I take out the depth of a shovel and replace it with everything you mentioned. Perhaps if I were younger and stronger, I'd go 2 feet deep, but I feel like a wacko as it is. Though the soil does become black in several months from all the added organics, my big question has always been "what happens when the roots extend beyond the amended area into the native sand?" So I guess I'm saying to go for the 2 feet if your back and pocketbook can hold up. I'm sure you can get good topsoil & compost in bulk. It's cheaper that way. I get my horse manure compost for free from a horse farm down the road. This year she said she "sanded" her stalls more which made the compost very heavy. I know she thought it was a good thing (and I don't know for sure that it wasn't), but I gasped at the word 'sand'. After all, I worked hard to get rid of the sand, and now I'm adding more! I don't know anything about horses or their bedding needs, but I do know the straw will pull nitrogen from the soil so you need to add extra nitrogen. I use a lot of Milorganite. The worms love it. I use Rose-Tone or Holly-Tone because that's what Lowe's carries, but I occasionally get a big bag of Purely Organic from a man in the local rose society. I use cottonseed meal, blood meal on occasion and lots of alfalfa in preparing the bed. Last year I used up a 50 lb bag of greensand in the beds I dug. It adds potassium (N-P-K: 0-1-6). Florida sand is typically very deficient in K. I found a company called Fertrell who had a local rep who sold their organic products out of his home so that's where I got it. I use Mycorrhizae - microorganisms that you add at planting that greatly enhance root growth. I sprinkle them directly on the roots before I put the plant in the hole. I also use "Vitamin B-1 Plant Starter" by Lilly Miller (from Lowe's.) This is very unscientific, but I forgot to use it once and several of my potted up roses withered and died. :(( At least it's cheap. I have limey sand so I use soil sulphur. I mostly grow own-root Old Garden Roses. I have a few on Fortuniana but 20 times as many on their own roots - Chinas, Teas and Noisettes. Hope this helps. Sherry

Awesome pics of beautiful plants. Thanks for sharing! I've always known pothos as Scindapsus in the rare occasions a latin name is mentioned for this plant. Seems to be like coleus, there's rarely any confusion with these common names. But you had been told "Epipremnum" so I googled to see if this was one of the plants recently renamed or if there are actually 2 kinds of pothos from different genuses? My research was inconclusive although I didn't go too long, figuring someone more knowledgeable than me will let us know. L_in_FL there are several different passion vines, but I think most are hardy to zone 8. Just wanted to warn you the caterpillars of the gulf fritillary butterflies will likely eat every shred of leaf and even the buds/flowers off of this vine if a mama lays her eggs on it. You mentioned this is on the front of your house, so this may not be the look you're after on a front wall even if you are in full favor of feeding some butterfly caterpillars. If it's new this year, without nectar-source plants nearby, that's probably why you haven't had this happen this year.

I was supposed to go to the Texas Get-together at Buzzard's...Nita said that was like 5 years ago! Couldn't believe. Judy and I found our local connections; Bbabers was a librarian, I've been on our town's library board and Friend's board. Nita's folks and my folks all lived in Naples, FL and, of course, felt like I've known her for years...guess I have. I've been busy, but have been lurking, thanks for keeping my phone number all these years, Nita. Judy and I decided for the next get-together...we're driving there together! Had a wonderful time yesterday, looking forward to the next one.

Oh, fun, fun, fun! What restaurant/town were you in? Short-sleeved weather, boy, does that sound nice! Aunt Lexie looks a little bit suspicious of all you nuts, though, April! Are you sure you didn't kidnap her along the way? lololol

Everyone looks great and it's obvious you had fun, yay for girl-time!

What wonderful happy pictures to look at. I was there is spirit with you...I could even hear your beautiful voices. Really! That phone call was the highlight of my week! Thank you for thinking of me. I am so glad that I was home to answer. You are all the greatest. Maybe next year a phone call won't be needed for me to hear all that laughter and fun.

I want a Nita hug too! It seems Nita gets around LOL. Where do you guys get together? Are you all in Florida? I do go to Florida at least once a year.....

What fun we had. The lunch was delish and the company was wonderful. Can't wait till next year.

Good36 this group met on the east coast (Hobe Sound) this year. Last year we met at Nita's parent's home in Naples.
