Limestone Herringbone Backsplash... Too Much?

Thanks to everyone's input on backsplash ideas. I am not opposed to doing something more traditional, but still toying with the idea of something a little different.

I like the look of this backsplash. In this photo they have it only around the range. Do you think this would be "too much" or too busy to use along the entire backsplash of a galley kitchen? I am thinking about using 2x8 limestone.

Mine would not be that large scale. I have to keep the wonderful micrwave hood. My cabinets are 18" above countertops. Each side is approximately 8' long. Thanks!

what kind of countertop do you have? In the two pictures you posted, both the countertops are very calm. If you have a very busy granite then that back splash may not work. But if you have a calm countertop, it would probably look great.

So helpful, thank you! I was leaning towards staggered too because there's not too much backsplash space, but it was a difficult decision as herringbone looks so nice and elegant in other people's (larger!) kitchens. If nothing else, doing it offset will save on tile and labour, as my tiler quoted nearly double for the herringbone.

I would do white arabesque or white subway in a brick set pattern. I don't think your backsplash is large enough for herringbone. If you care about resale, choose with white over gray. A white kitchen is timeless, and gives the ability to paint the walls any color later on without having to rip out the back splash.

$1500 sounds cheap to me, and I am not in D.C. And herringbone tile backsplash is an installation that requires experience and skill, so it typically costs more that an easier tile backsplash. Please read this linked thread about a herringbone backsplash incorrectly installed by the GC’s subcontractor. There is a lot of instruction in the linked thread, so if you decide you want to stay with your GC’s subcontractor, at least you can educate yourself on what to look for, and stop the guy early if he is not doing it correctly. https://www.houzz.com/discussions/5886990/crooked-marble-herringbone-backsplash-install-acceptable

Tilebar gets mentioned a lot, but I prefer to support local brick and mortar independent tile stores. Tilebar doesn't manufacture their tile, they are a reseller, just like your local tile store. Find a few local tile stores and borrow some sample boards. When searching for my own backsplash tile, I found the same tile locally at a slightly better price than Tilebar. It isn't that quartz and marble can clash, any material can clash with another! Some here just believe that marble-look quartz and real marble should not be next to each other. Plenty of examples of it working too! You've done a nice job with the kitchen so far, so trust your judgement and the real colors you see in the space. Also no need to rush. It took me about 5 months to decide on a backsplash after we moved into our new house.

I literally said "oooooh" out loud when I saw that first picture. So pretty and elegant!

I like the herringbone as a focal point behind the stove, because it seems like the pattern needs some vertical space to really do it justice (at least with the size shown in the pictures.) Maybe you could mock up an image of how it would look between your counters and upper cabinets to see how it would look and to make sure it's not an excessive number of cuts.

I actuall did make a partial mock up of 2x8. I will take a picture of it and post. Yeah, I really like the first one, too. It is classy and striking. I think it does have a lot to do with the scale, though, so that's why I am questioning if it will work in my kitchen.

I love the first one too - I should b/c I posted it as an inspiration in one of my threads as well! I agree with you that the scale of your area will dictate if the size and pattern is a good choice. Were you thinking about doing the "relief" type approach as in the first photo? It is so understated and stunning. Good luck with your choice. I think the herringbone is a good classic choice - but still unexpected.

Do you have an elevation or photos of your kitchen?

That works beautifully on a large wall. But will you have space to reveal the whole pattern under your cabinets, say, or between windows and the countertop?

There are some smaller herringbone tiles that could work in a smaller space --
I agree that one needs room to develop...

Here is a rough floor plan of my kitchen. I have a microwave hood, so I cannot gain space over the range. Both walls are 8 feet long.
