Personally I think it's a beautiful style of furniture, but then again I like traditional. I don't think you'd be making a bad investment with this furniture. It's classic in its' style.

Do you mind me asking how much they are pricing this set? As far as quality I can't comment because I can't see or touch it. Look inside the drawers and doors and try to shake the items to see if they are sturdy. Make sure no vaneer is coming off on the top or botton of the pieces.

I have been trying to find a headboard like that one to paint and cut out the panels, then cover with material and then I could pop them in and out for changing whenver the season or mood struck me.

It's very nice. Just be sure you have help as those armoires can weigh a few hundred lbs, the dresser too.

Do you know the manufacturer? It looks well made.

I like it. I could see it in an episode of Design Inc with that Sarah lady - I like her design style.

I agree with the idea of getting rid of that mirror. I'd find something different that hangs on the wall in stead of sitting on the dresser. Or even no mirror, and a picture instead, if you don't need it in that spot.

I also like the upholstered headboard idea, but the moulding at the top seems like it'd be a little hard to work with. I'd be considering cutting it down in height to get the top moulding off.

If it's just a headboard, it might be worth it to try to resell and instead buy an upholstered headboard. Do you have Millstores near you? They sell cheap pine headboards. I had one that I upholstered myself years ago and it looked great.

you might what to take detailed measurements of everything and make sure you can get it in your bedroom.

My neighbor bought a headboard and there is no way to get it up their stairs so they have to return it.

Thanks for your input so far. They're asking $1100 for the set, not sure of the type of wood or the manufacturer. I also wish they had a better pic of the armoire, but I hope it's not too boxy.

It looks nice. I'm not sure where you're from but $1100 is too rich for my blood. It better be EXACTLY what you want for that price and high quality.

I think it has a very classic look to it. But IMO it doesn't have a super expensive look to me. It could be, but without knowing the maker and the quality/type of wood it is as well as knowing how it's constructed, it's really hard to tell. I think it looks great!

I purchased a cherry sleigh bed, a large dresser and a tall boy chest of drawers off my CL for $50 each! they appear to be solid wood, I cannot see any veneer anywhere, but it turns out that after the fact I found out that they were purchased at a local discount /outlet type store, they may well have been higher end furniture, and I like how they look, but they actually are a really good "knock off of something much more expensive" so again without knowing, it can be really tricky to tell.

At my Antique Mall where I sell furniture, that set would probably bring about $900 full retail. That would be about $200-250 for the bed, $275-$325 for the dresser and about $250 for the armoire and probably $75 for the nightstand. (that would be all mahogany fully restored (if it was older and needed any work).

$1100 seems way too high on CL.

i think people who list on CL generally want more than what their used stuff is worth, but if it's better furniture store quality I think it's worth it. A dresser alone like that from Pottery Barn or Ethan Allen would easily be more than $1100.

I'd take good measurements, and search them as best I can for the quality. Let her know you need to take a drawer out and see the construction, etc. Look for a label if she doesn't know the manufacturer.

Then, tell her you're interested but need to see if the measurements will work - and go home and google the manufacturer to see if it's worth it.

You could try to bargain. My other neighbor listed a leather sofa and matching love seat for something like $3000. Someone offered her $1200 and she said sure, come get it out of here.

Very pretty, very classy. I agree you should bargain and search CL to see how long she has listed it, sometimes previous unsuccessful listing attempts show up if you search the poster's phone number, etc. Try to find out the manufacturer.

If it's not too late in the game, maybe you can ask her to measure it and send you the measurements, and also ask if she knows the name of the manufacturer. Otherwise, I would make sure to bring a measuring tape and know the dimensions of your room (and entrances) when you go. Also look for the manufacturers name -- it's usually inside oneof the upper drawers.

This set looks really nice in the pictures, but until you know who made it and what it's made of it's pretty hard to tell if it's worth $1100. I agree with the above posters that said people often overprice on CL because they think their stuff is worth more than it is. And keep in mind that CL prices differ by locality too....where I live in the NYC metro area, that price isn't out of the range for a six piece bdrm set; an armoire alone can be $400+. But I imagine that might seem an insane price in other areas of the country.

I like the set, however, I think that is a lot for a craigslist item. I only see one nightstand which would be a problem for me.

I would want to pay way less if I saw a need to alter the set. I like it the way it is, but if you don't, you need to factor that into your price.

The price is high for CL.

IF it is SOLID WOOD, not veneer, it might be worth $650 to $750.

IF it is pressboard that is veneered, it might be worth $300 to $400.

Take a look at the back of the armoire. If it is a cheap pressboard, or masonite or anything like that, and/or if it is in two sections held together by a long vertical plastic or vinyl connector piece (about 3/4 inch wide with two channels that the backing fits into) then the entire set is probably only worth $300 at most.

I've done some furniture shopping with my daughter, who as a young professional recently graduated from college is on a pretty tight budget. A lot of stuff that is for sale at the low end of retail is crazy cheap quality, but surprisingly expensive in price. CL is great, if you're buying something that was good quality to begin with.

I think $1100 is too much for something that is used, no matter what the quality. Some sellers have this notion that they should recoup most of what they paid for the item, but that is not the way to sell items.

I would ask where and when it was purchased and the brand name. Then still I would not pay more than say $800 and that's if it is solid wood and a name brand from a fine furniture store. Check drawers to see if they are dove tail or glued. If they are glued then the set is cheap furniture and I wouldn't pay more than $600 for everything.

UPDATE: Went and saw the set this morning. Disappointed actually, it is a set purchased from COSTCO and don't think it's a high quality set. Couldn't tell what kind of wood it was, drawers were a bit sticky. Was OK, but just OK. I'm going to wait to find something of better quality.

Well, you found what some suspected, that it wasn't an extremely "good" set. Now, Costco/Sam's Club furniture can be just what the doctor ordered and many people are quite pleased with their purchases. I have a tv armoire in my bedroom that was an 'assemble it yourself' piece from Sauder I bought ten years ago for like $99 new. It has worked fine for us for many years. But right now, I would love to find a good solid wood piece that will stand the test of time and fit my style better. For that, I must do used, like CL or estate sale or garage sale.

The great thing about going to check on something like that (overpriced!) bedroom suite, is, that it gives you a better feel for the next one you find. It helps you know what questions to ask and to price things out in your head better. I rarely feel a trip was not worthwhile, even when it's a No-Buy. Usually, if I spend the time to travel across town for craigslist stuff, I only feel cheated if the seller badly misrepresented or if I didn't ask enough questions first. And sometimes, I do ask, "So do you remember where you bought the armoire?" or "how long have you had this piece?" If someone tells me Costco or JCPenney, I know it's probably not just what I thought from the photo. If they just bought it, then, why are they selling it?
I hope your next set is the real deal. And while you do NOT want to haggle down the price on the phone, it's still ok to just ask, "Before I come see, is your price real firm?" or "I do want to see it, are you negotiable at all on the price?" Don't make an offer, just feel them out.

A good tip I recently learned is to check drawers for dovetailing at the front AND at the back. One way to distinguish good from better.

Course I then went home and pulled out every drawer in the house....

I didn't ask who the manufacturer was, that could have saved me a trip, although I agree with Red, this helps me better know what I want.

COSTCO, seems maybe they were trying to get the retail price for that set. Sorry it didn't work out, but something will come your way. I've bought many wonderful items on Craig's. It's all in the timing.
