Sealing Over Dirt Floor in Basement - DIY?

Hi, I just posted below about sealing rubble walls. We also need to fill in a small area of the basement that still has a dirt floor. It's an old cistern, no more than 5" x 10" and the mason said he would charge $1500 to fill it in, which seems really expensive. Is this something I could do myself? If so, would you just pour pea gravel on top of the dirt and then cover that with cement? It doesn't have to be pretty, we just can't have exposed soil. Thanks.
