Did you watch this week's 'Harry's Law' (suing fast-food co's)?

If so, what did you think?

Do some neighborhoods really not have a choice of whether to eat fast food many times a week? Do you believe the fast-food companies target certain neighborhoods because they know people living there will go every day because a cheeseburger is 99 cents while the ingredients to make more healthful meals is several times that?

(I believe 'no' is the answer to the first question and 'yes' is the answer to the second. But there are many more questions and issues involved here.)

I did think this episode was a bit slimy, tho -- the lawyer's goal was just to squeeze some money out of the companies for his client. (This wasn't the lawyer played by Kathy Bates)

I agree with you that the lawyer without principles was looking like a real s.o.b. ~~~ however, then THEN ~~ his argument in court was David Kelly's writing at its best ~~ just outstanding ~~ and I believe it was all true; but, sadly, poverty *IS* a sad, sad situation in this wealthy country, isn't it ~~~

While the lawyer's argument was good, I'm really getting tired of the "blame the other guy" mentality of today's society. When I was poor, I never ate out--you can fix healthy meals at home for less money. Sure, a cheeseburger for 99 cents is cheap, but how many people get just a cheeseburger--they certainly will get fries and a coke to go with it. That increases the price dramatically (not to mention the health risks). It's no secret that fast food chains make their profits on sodas.

Unfortunately, too many people today are too lazy to cook. My son's widow and my stepson's wife do not know how to cook. Their mothers didn't cook. The kids have been raised on fast food. To me, that's akin to child abuse or neglect. It's very sad.

Back to Harry's Law...I like the series more each time I watch it. The writers are very good, and Kathy Bates is great.

Yes, DVR makes it more efficient. As a stay-at-home mom I have random bouts of free time. Nothing was ever on when I got the chance to watch. Plus since my kids are little I don't really like to watch Prime Time TV with them around-everything seems to have violence, curse words etc. I love how you can tape a whole series with the push of a button and of course fast forward through the commercials!!

You guys never cease to amaze me. I worked. You'd be surprised at how many people celebrate the 4th with Tex-mes. I mean Tex-Mex. Yup. Mex, not Mes. Just got back online after a week without a computer. Longest week in my life since I went online in 1988. Yup. 1988. Absolutely roto-routed my system with a Blackberry phone app (dropped old phone in potty, activated a new, 2-year old phone) which deleted all my communication drivers (WiFi, Bluetooth, and even ethernet) and caused my factory installed Windows to claim it was a counterfeit edition. Huh? Although back online, I am really disgusted with the frou-frou Windows 10. Can do very few functional things with it. Grrrr.... But here I am. Hot, sweaty, and online. We're in our first real heatwave.

Someone on Hot Topics has posted a video of Sasha Baron Cohen accepting an award from the Anti-Defamation League. It's worth looking up. Cohen makes the point that lies and hatred are being spread far and wide by Facebook and Google -- unchecked -- as some sort of 'entertainment'. I agree with him that these for profit companies should be held to the same regulations as newspapers, broadcasters, magazines, movies, etc. NOT to disseminate fake news and foment hate. "Free Speech" has bounds. Journalism slid into this when it began presuming that *everything* has 'two sides'. No, not everything is 'debatable'. Facts do not have 'alternative meanings'. A pound IS 16 ounces, not some alternative number. Regarding this thread, President Trump DID withhold aid to Ukraine while demanding that Ukraine announce an investigation that he could use to smear his political rival. It is not "OK" to so abuse the office of the President, nor to use taxpayer money for personal profit.

Our broccoli and collards look great. They stand up to freezes well. Last year I planted spigarello lisca broccoli. It doesn't make heads like broccoli, but it made wonderful greens that didn't mind our summer and laughed at bugs. I need to remember to plant it next year. Nancy, I've frozen mushrooms like that, but I thought you bought them frozen, LOL. Funny Rick I know the terms slave cylinder and master cylinder from a truck that sat in our front yard for a long time. Ron kept replacing parts on the clutch. He finally sold the truck. If I remember correctly Totally Tomatoes was a good company that was sold. Not so good since then. Seeds n Such has beefmaster. I think the owner used to own totally tomatoes. (I think this was a Đawn story.) I have purchased from Seeds n such. They're ok, and I think when someone had problems with germination they were quick to resolve the issue. We do buy canned soup, makes a quick lunch. I prefer Progresso brand. They have great tomato Basil soup. And every now and then I like old fashioned Campbell's tomato soup with grilled cheese sandwiches. That brings back memories. (I am very nostalgic today). Moni, native Ginger and what comes from the store are different. I tried to grow grocery store Ginger without success. I did grow it with a start from Companion Plants .https://www.companionplants.com/catalog/ Also turmeric. Turmeric is a beautiful plant. I even had it bloom. I don't know where Danny got his, which I believe he said was native wild ginger. Re: holidays...I've never been much of a Baker. Occasional cookies. But I realized when Travis was 2 he didn't understand the book with cookies coming out of the oven because he'd never seen it. I always felt overwhelmed taking care of kids and house, so Christmas added to my stress. I don't have those stresses now, but memories make me less then than enthusiastic. Of course Christmas morning is good, just not the lead up. Ok, this was done in "colornote" and the keyboard behaved. In Houzz I would type something and it would jump over to before the last letter of the previous word and type the next word there. Sometimes it skipped letters, usually vowels. It did the same when I changed keyboard apps. I changed to Firefox because chrome gave me trouble with Houzz. I suspect it is houzz, but I don't know where to go now. I don't have room for another app. Also, today FB won't let me paste. Instead of the paste option it says auto complete. If I press that, it asks for a password. In a comment. WTF? Enjoy your weekend.

We were pretty poor when I was a preteen. Fast food was out of the question! That was NOT considered a need-to-have. Neither was; peanut butter, paper towels/plates, juice, we NEVER bought soda, junk food.

Sadly, it does seem like healthier foods are much more expensive. You CAN eat healthy for the same price as a meal at BK, it just takes a little work.

Me too. I work with these people's kids. The girl works fast food, discount so runs through the drive through very morning on the way to school..she is CONSTIPATED to the point of an ER visit. I suggested she change her diet. Buy apples/cheese sticks if she is in a hurry. "We have that, for the day care kids" she said. The poor are very influenced by advertising. They make a lot of bad choices.

It's not like if fast food restaurants left the poor neighborhoods, healthy and cheap food purveyors would take their places. There is a reason that poor people can't get cheap groceries in their neighborhoods. There is very little margin in that business to begin with, and plenty of shoplifting in the nice areas, but it's just about impossible for grocers to make any money in poor neighborhoods without charging inflated prices. Who's fault is that?

when we had small kids we didn't have the cash to buy fast food for a family of 6...

on the other hand, when i grew up we never had fast food cause there wern't any! my first encounter with burger king was in 1970...at the age of 24...

our hs fast food was ihop!
