I HATE snails and slugs..in fact I noticed a few extra nibbled bits on my garden flora...Time to get the bait out again....

How do you protect your veggies from that guy? I have something nibbling on my basil plants and don't have a clue about pest control that won't hurt us humans who are eating it too!

I did hear that they like beer, although I've never had a problem with them so i've not tried it. Put out a dish of beer, the slug crawls in and can't get out. I guess it would have to be a deep dish? Or maybe he drowns in beer? LOL

Beer works for ordinary, blue collar slugs. Escargot prefer a good chardonnay.

Beer works, you have to submerge the bowl to the rim so that they can dive in.

He can eat a whole hosta in a night!...and probably did, that's how he got so big!

No, I'm really not interested in killing him. I have so many hosta, I can certainly share with him. Really, I haven't noticed any damage so I don't know what s/he's been eating. The only veggie I grow is one tomato plant in a pot, so it isn't that. I noticed him/her when I was taking out the trash last night. I am so grateful I didn't step on him/her.

I have a friend that tried the beer method. She said it worked but wasn't worth dealing with the aftermath. A good chardonnay -- that might be more palatable.

I don't like slugs, either. And we get a deluge of slugs here, after a rain storm. We live very close to the ocean.. and we can actually smell them before we see them. It is a salty smell.

I can remember the first time I smelled this, not really understanding what it was.... I walked on to my small porch, barefoot, and immediately found myself grossed out.
Yes! If you think slugs are gross, try having one or two large ones squished between your toes!

That said, I would never, ever salt them. I think it is extremely cruel. My neighbor offered that solution to me and did a show and tell. It is horrifying to see and you can see that the slug is suffering.. burning, actually.

Slug bait is not a good idea, either. They don't die right away and they are a danger to any animal that comes in contact with them.
If you must kill them, the submerged container of beer will only kill them, not other animals. Keep in mind that this is not a painless method.. nor is it instant. Drowning is never easy.

Me? What do I do? I have many hosta plants. Some years are worse than others for slug damage. I let the hostas slug it out with the slugs. Hey, some years the hostas win and some years the slugs win. It all evens out in the end.

To make a sick joke about a very painful way to die is just that, IMO, sick.

There are bugs and slugs and there are chickens and fish and lobster and crabs...as well as bacteria, house flies and mosquitoes, cereal moths and cockroaches.. Perhaps it's the size that somehow makes you feel that salting them is cruel? More cruel than putting out ant traps? or spraying for cockroaches, eating chicken or beef?
I have almost 100 different hosta varieties and many many more plants...I am not willing to share my hosta with slugs nor my corn with borers.
As for slug bait, there are different kinds the iron sulfate isn't harmful to other animals. Don't know if the slug experiences more pain than salting causes....I don't follow them to see if they eat the bait and where they go.

The snails and slugs ate my hostas down to stumps so often they never returned. I gave up. The snails won.

That one is HUGE!

Potatoes! Put fresh raw potato slices in infested containers or gardens at dusk. Go back out 1-3 hours later with a flashlight. Slices will be covered in slugs. Pick 'em up and throw them away. No harm, no foul!

Slugs are easily defeated with either Sluggo or Escar-Go! (the latter from Gardens Alive). Both are perfectly safe around pets and safe in organic gardens. When I sow lettuces, I immediately sprinkly some around so the little seedlings are not eaten when they sprout.

And there are other less expensive iron sulfate baits as well. But the last time I bought some I couldn't find the cheap stuff and had to buy the high priced Escar-go! LOL!

a mixture of water and ammonia sprayed on them will take care of them . A one to one mixture will do the trick. Place it in a spray bottle and spray away.

That;s a Great Grey Slug / Tiger Slug. I don't think you want to kill it. It eats other slugs.

Becky, I never knew there is more than one kind of slug! I did not kill him. He happily slithered off into the pachysandra. Maybe that's why I don't have slug damage -- he's been eating all of them. Oh the humanity! Slugmanity??

I let the quail have them. Does that mean if you eat wild quail then you are eating through them slugs, snails, worms and bugs? You are what you eat!
