Airplane Crash In Austin Texas

They just reported the small airplane crash in Austin Texas was done on purpose. The guy set his own house on fire before doing this. Still one person missing..

My brother's all-time favorite like this was a father&son team who were going to steal the catenary wire from the Long Island Railroad. These wires are energized to 11,000 volts with 1,500 ampere circuit breakers. (Home wiring is 110 volts with 15 ampere circuit breakers.) These two knuckleheads used aluminum ladders to cut down the wire. They figured the power was off because the employees of the railroad were on strike. But it was not off. They climbed a very tall chain-link fence with barbed wire at the top of it to accomplish their task. They got very badly fried, but miraculously did not get killed. When they got out of the hospital, they sued the railroad. The RR's defense was that the railroad was fenced in and that signs were posted every 50 feet (or something like that) warning of the danger. The judge asked if the signs were in Spanish. No. Judge awarded for the plaintiffs.

Suggestions for good roses for the Austin, TX area
Q

I used to live in Georgetown so know how hot it gets. I think Mike's suggestion of arbors is excellent. You could also consider a couple of crepe myrtle trees - White Natchez crepe myrtle is a tree that can take alot of punishment and survive well and bloom in the summer. The Natchez has a really pretty arching form and can give some height and interest to the wall and perhaps a bit of shade to the roses. In back of my horse barn in an area with all day hot sun, I have crepe myrtles and old garden roses [Maman Cochet, Mrs. BR Cant, Mon. Tillier, Mme. Berkeley, Georgetown Tea] planted together - the effect is beautiful. I have differing colors of the crepe myrtles - lavender [here is where you could include your lavender color], hot pink, light pink, white, red - really is striking in the hot summer when the roses are resting. I have also found that it really is true that mulching is important. I mulch my roses with horse compost then topdress with wood mulch from Home Depot. The roses thrive - the ones I didnt mulch dont look nearly as good. My suggestion would be to plant old garden roses first - and I also highly recommend the Antique Rose Emporium and Chamblees. I was just at ARE - bought several of the Pioneer roses that are supposed to be really tough. Also, I would like to recommend the Buck roses. Carefree Beauty is a good one. There are many other good ones - Eutin is a red that has literally hundreds of buds on it - really an eyecatcher. The noisettes - and I adore Crepuscule! - are very hardy. The ARE had a store in San Antonio, now closed, but I would call P.K. at the Independence store - tell her your growing conditions, and let her recommend. Get their color catalog and look that over. I think the really important thing for first year roses is to mulch and water. I did that with my above mentioned bed - now I never water them and they are fabulous. If you dont have much experience with roses, you will succeed with the old gardens - then branch out to the hybrid teas if you like. If you built an arbor, you might have some luck growing a couple of the Austin roses under it where they can get a bit of shade. A couple of tough reds are Cadenza and Cameron Bohls. I have both and love them. Dont forget about the Lady Banksia rose - both white and creamy yellow. They are marvelous in the spring. New Dawn should do well also. From what I recall of soil in your area - be sure and dig a big hole and incorporate good soil with the native soil. I have also heard - bought some, going to try it next time I plant - that a cupful of shale, which holds then releases water, is good to put in the hole of roses growing in dry hot areas. Good luck! Love the limestone on your house....

the terrible fires in Texas
Q
Comments (15)
Hi y'all. Yes, I'm in Houston and thank goodness, ok. But the fires are terrible. Karen is right, the worst of it is in Bastrop which is just southeast of Austin. But the destruction is going on statewide. There are fires just north of Houston (in our same county!) so no telling what will happen next. I've linked to a fire map below so you can see the fires just north of Houston and all those fires west of Houston which includes Bastrop. We got some cool weather yesterday and today which is a relief but the trouble is that the cool front just brought winds and no rain which made everything worse instead of better. We did get a tiny bit of rain early last week but it had been so long since we'd seen it before, we weren't even sure what it was! We need rain. Desperately. But we have to temper that wish because if we get too much all at once (which is almost sure to happen) it will only cause flooding since the ground is so dry. Doesn't it always seem like it's flooding in one place and bone dry in another? It's weird, isn't it? Here is a link that might be useful: fire map

Ben .. do you think with graces lawsuit and the rose debacle perhaps that will fall through? Can’t say if someone sued me I would still sell to them 😅 I don’t know why it rubs me the wrong way that any one entities should have exclusive rights to anything. ( perhaps it’s just graces wording that irks me ) But I always assumed that since palantine was in Canada they were exempt from the exclusion rule of the us . For example grace may be the exclusive vendor for so and so in the United States .. but palantine is in ca so they can sell too .

The plane crash was on our local noon news but no details like in this story here. How very sad if it was an accident but oh, so very sad/tragic if on purpose!

News reports are now saying that it was intentional. Apparently the pilot set his own home on fire before he took off in the plane.

That is NOT TRUE. Not true at all. Do not make up stuff.

A tragedy like this is bad enough without people making up different versions of the events in their head and posting it hoping people will believe it and cause a frenzy.

Everyone: READ the news reports. The facts are there.

Yes, it appears that he did set his house on fire before the flight. See the link below.

Dilly,

I'm curious as to why you assume something is made up as opposed to maybe asking for the source of the information or checking it out yourself.

Before you accuse someone of making stuff up, wouldn't it be best to check it out first?

Yes...see the link above....the facts are there. That was pretty common knowledge and all over the media just a couple of hours Thursday following the plane crash. I'm surprised you didn't hear of it.

Authorities believe that he did light the house on fire, but the reports I read in the Austin paper indicate the wife and daughter were NOT in the house at the time. The local news reported that they has not spent the previous night in the house. Initial reports may have read differently.

Thank you gardenspice for being a voice of reason. The facts are that his daughter was, (and still is) in Norway, and his wife was at a hotel when the house went ablaze. This was the official report.

And then, per Time.com, reported by Hilary Hylton:

"Neighbors managed to pull Stack's wife Sheryl aND 12 year old stepdaughter from the home after Stack allegedly set it on fire. Neighbors told local news that Stack's wife and her daughter had left home on Wednesday evening afer Stack became angry, staying overnite at a hotel and returning this morning".

I'm not sure what an "Official Report" at this early date is anyway The FBI's, the Austin, Tx Police Department's, the Austin, TX Fire Department's? If they don't agree, do they draw straws?
