Bathroom Chandy/lights placement?

Today started off with a bang as our contractor started the demolition of our master bath and basement. Have to finalize lighting picks for the bathroom on Wednesday and I am having second thoughts. Hoping to get a spa like feel in the bath and wanted a chandelier with a little bling. H doesn't want a total girly feel. The contractor's designer suggested the Quoizel Hollister series for the lighting by the vanities...the four light bar above H's sink and the sconces on either side of my mirrors. The vanities are directly across from each other. Do you think it will look strange not to have the same lighting fixtures? The central light will be from the Quoizel Downtown line, a ceiling mount with a drum shade. Has anyone ever had a drum shade in their bathroom? Will it hold up to moisture/steam? I am not very good with this stuff so any help is much appreciated!

Thanks. If I do 4 lights over the vanity in the master, what size recessed lights should be used? I'm doing 4" lights throughout the house but would the lights over the vanity be smaller than that? The article doesn't mention what size to use. I can't center lights over the sinks because of ceiling joists but maybe I could place 4 small recessed lights similar to the digthisdesign article. For kids bath, it seems a bit overkill to do 4 recessed lights over the vanity. Will it really be that bad if I just center two recessed lights in the room for general illumination? I have 3 boys so no one should be putting make up on in there (most likely).

Placement of bathroom French doors

Thank you all so much for your feedback! I have incorporated a lot of your comments into the design. I am going to propose the following changes to the builder (we are mid framing): Increase French door width to 6 feet. Make the 3 foot door panel closest to sink fixed. Make the functional 3 foot door near tub swing inward. I will have him keep the doors pretty much centered on the bedroom vault but go over one foot longer to accommodate the extra foot (especially since really shouldn’t get closer to sink). This will also make the bathroom seem more balanced I think and the operable door with open to the chandelier in the bathroom. I will also place a large full length mirror on back wall next to linen closet which will reflect light from large bedroom window feature (and hopefully be more attractive than looking at plain wall or side of bathroom door) Change shower door swing and add a towel bar on door (this is brilliant!). Should the towel bar be on outside of door itself or to the left? Change WC door to be a pocket door to eliminate the look of so many doors and so don’t have to look at it when open (and we often would probably leave it open so this way it doesn’t block mirror). I will have to ask contractor about this but I suspect he could do pocket door into the open attic space. I will change the direction and swing of both closet doors and will also ask about cost to upgrade them to French doors (well single door but glass with divided panes— and will do white curtain on back like suggested). Do you think it’s worth it to upgrade linen closet to same door? Thank you for all the suggestions!!

I would consider putting the two sinks on the same wall, and a separate makeup vanity on teh wall wall where the sink in question i located -- or in the bedroom if there's space. Then you have lots of reasonable options. Otherwise, no lighting from one side of your face. Do single mirrors with lights above, or keep the long mirror.

Well, here in California, all the lights--traditional or modern--have to be LED. But I think you're asking more from a style perspective, yes? If you're planning to go more modern, the LED mirrors are nice, but personally I find them a bit clinical looking. I'd still go with modern sconces vs. LED mirrors.

I love the fixtures you have chosen. My favourite finish is chrome in the bathrooms, love the sparkle. I like the idea that the light fixtures are different. Doesnt look like the drum is fabric so imo it would be ok in the bathroom.

I like your selection a great deal, but the drum shade is linen and I can't imagine that standing up to moisture in a bathroom. Or at least I'd be worried about it.

I can't help you on how the drum shade would hold up in there but wow is it gorgeous! I think you will be fine with the different lights b/c they are totally different types of lights/placements and they coordinate. Good luck!

Thank you. Talked to designer about my concerns. Will stick with all of the lights as she explained the sconces on my side will be more feminine and the bar more masculine on H's side. She believes the linen shade will work but will replace if it gets damaged or doesn't hold up. I am such a worrier! ;)

I'll be the defending voice. You have a lot of shades with those...shade shade shade everywhere. And then another that does not match in the center? I actually think it's bad design. And with two vanities in eyes view, the lighting for those should match in both style and placement. I'd do the sconces on both and ditch the bar light and look to something non fabric nd non shade for the center...or go with no shades on the sconces...but lose some shades! Too much of a good thing is....well in this case, too much.

As to the drum shade idea...I'm assuming that you have checked code? Open fixtures (non water approved like the drum you are looking at) need to be at least eight feet up from the surface of the tub or sinks and three feet out (draw a box in your minds three feet outdated froall water and eight foot up from the faucets). Either way, that drum is cool, but fabric is a mistake and too many drums gets a bit noisy :)

I would be worried about the drum shades in the moisture. I also would wonder how much shadow you are going to get at your mirror with lights on either side, but not over the center?

I love great style, and I think your lights are very nice, but in the end, in a bathroom, practicality and utility matter the most.

What about using a couple of pendant lights over your vanity, something with a little more bling if you like? I think that would add a feminine touch, and give you light over the mirror. If you want to use the Hollister grouping, the shade on the pendants is glass, not fabric, another plus.
