I don't think so....just the thoughts of that floppy lobster with out it's shell gives me the willies!
I have no trouble extricating the meat from a lobster even in the most formal of circumstances.

Yea - sounds a little like soft shell crab which also gives me the willies. Not really without a shell, but so newly molted they are squishy.

Shudder.

I thought it was strange but apparently there must be a market for it. It's kind of spendy. If I'm going to spend alot on lobster I will buy just the claw meat.

It's from Nova Scotia - anyone from Canada familiar with this product.

Sounds awful - frozen lobsters are so rubbery, I learned that expensive lesson, I only buy whole fresh Maine lobster now.

I don't think I would mind the texture. Raw scallops, clams and oysters don't seem to bother me. But I have no intention of buying any. I'd rather have the giant claws I got last year from some company in Maine. They were huge.

I think there is a very special machine somehow using very high pressure to accomplish this.

I can't remember when and where I have seen it.

Given the RA pains in my hands and wrists, I love the idea. And it is no differant than canned oysters or crabmeat.

But then again, I have very, very few food "issues". With parents that went through wars and hunger, issues were not allowed. So if I were to have fussed over floppy lobster or squishy crabs, it was do without tonight. People and food were to be respected.

"With parents that went through wars and hunger, issues were not allowed. So if I were to have fussed over floppy lobster or squishy crabs, it was do without tonight. People and food were to be respected."

While I appreciate the idea that our access to abundance should be honored and respected there is no need to shame others for having preferences.

If I am paying the prices on that site for "naked lobster" it better not be anything like canned!
I think most of us of a "certain age" have had parents who went through war on one side of the Pond or the other and who respect food....but ?? If someone served me a previously frozen floppy lobster and I was truly hungry, my feelings would be very different than if I had just paid big bucks for that naked lobster.
Please leave my lobster in the shell, steam it, give me lots of lemon, some melted butter, a big napkin, a cracker and a warm wet napkin when I am through.

I donÂt understand. I looked for that Byerly (seems to be a home shopping grocery) advertisement couldnÂt find it. So they are whole lobster claws, body section, legs, and tail minus the shell? I donÂt see how that could be done. I have seen chunks of lobster meat in the tails shape. To simplify the process to me it looked like bits of lobster meat with some kind of binder mixed in then placed in a lobster tail mold ( like an ice cube tray ) then removed from the mold put into in freezer bags. If I was hungry during a time of war I eat them if not I save my money.

Tommy - really? I've never heard of anything like that... it sounds like lobster spam. I've been looking around to see if I could find anyone intentionally selling soft shell lobsters and every site I've found had basically the same comment:

Soft Shell: A lobster after it moults or sheds its hard shell to facilitate growth. During this soft-shell period, meat yield is low, and meat texture and flavour poor.

That said some people probably would eat something like lobster spam or soft shell lobster and not know the difference. I grew up in Maine eating lobster on a regular basis and I wouldn't touch either one.

There will always be those who like better the whole lobster in the shell. Obviously naked lobsters have a great advantage to many, especially restaurants in making lobster salad, bisque, lobster rolls, etc.

Also for shops not to have the expensive shipping costs and operating costs for water tanks for live lobsters. Lobster meat deteriorates rapidly in a dead lobster.

here ya go....I didn't find it on the Byerly's site...but on another one.
Sounds to be sort of like a cryo-vac wrapped baking potato ready for microwaving.
And you know who's buying stuff like that along with the package of meat carrots onion and a potato, don't you? Not the aging population, but the younger ones who never learned to cook.
those naked lobsters are marketed for those who have no idea how to get the meat out of a real lobster and don't want to learn.

The naked lobster looks and sounds interesting to me.
Like pkramer, it would be a boon for me.
For similar reasons.
And I would definitely try it if my budget could stand it.
Which it can't.

Also, like pkramer, I have very VERY few food 'issues'.
For the exact same reasons.

And that is in no way intended to "shame" anyone.
It is merely stating an opinion.
As others have done.

Rusty

Barnmom, it was a statement and in no way was it made to invoke a feeling of shame for you or anyone else. Had I meant that to be the case, I would have come right and said shame on you. Again,I am sorry you felt shame in my statement.

I felt no shame whatsoever. The shame was clearly implied in your statement and I have zero patience with that particular game, no matter to whom it is directed.

I got no impression of shaming in your post, pkramer. My first reaction to the idea of a shelled lobster was incredulity...why would someone pay extra for that?? But you brought up a very good point. There are physical ailments and conditions that would make cracking & digging difficult if not downright impossible for many folks.

Due to a vertebra problem, I went through a period when I could not even tie my own shoes, gripping anything small was so painful. Had I been given a lobster or crab at that point, I would have had to ask my husband to crack it for me.

Linda made a good point too, about younger people who have never learned to deal with a lobster, although I would suggest that it may not be as much a matter of not wanting to learn as a matter of 'so much to learn, so little time.' Young people who grew up without being taught how to cook have to learn everything on their own. And if you're working full time (perhaps with a long commute), trying to have time with your kids and spouse and yet put decent meals on the table instead of succumbing to the lure of quick, easy, crappy packaged or junk foods, taking the time to learn how to extract the meat from a lobster might be low on the priority list.

Personally, I don't think I'd use the product, not just for the expense but because the shell has a lot of flavor. No, I don't eat the shell, :D , but it does impart some of that flavor to the meat during cooking. AND, what would I make bisque out of???

This topic has blown my whole day due to all the links I am lost in internet land. I can believe the naked lobster picture. The upper lobster looks just like a space monster I remember seeing in the original Star Trek TV series. I was stationed in Rode Island in the navy in the early 70s we didnÂt get paid much but we use to eat at Custys ( think it was bit less than 20 dollar to eat back then all you could eat lobster restaurant) what a wonderful place. Now living it Texas we have to get every piece of meat out of the lobster to get our money worth. You donÂt how many hours I tried to get meat out of those legs I am still no good at it. I have never seen that much leg meat in my life much less the yield from that one single lobster. That machine looks like something that should be in a nuclear power plant. It also looks like I going to have to buy a book by Secret Lives of Lobsters. "I will not look at anymore of dcarch links"" I will not look at any more dcarch links" Oh http://www.amazon.com/Raw-Naked-Lobsters-Flash-Frozen/dp/B002Y1A7A. Look AMAZON (in HomerÂs voice) and I have a prime account hehe. Doh I bought the book. Stay away from the tails.... stay away from the tails DohÂ

HaHa, I may get some.

Deep fried whole bone-less lobsters. Me the first? :-)
