I recently married 6 years ago and my husband was in the military. His first wife died 7 years ago. I asked him why I don't a military card and he said I'm not suppose to. Everyone I asked say I'm suppose to have one. He don't won't be check on his military records. Any one know what steps I can take to get the right answers.

Hi Rabbit - Would you mind re-reading your post and clarifying a bit and fixing some typos? That might help us to offer you some suggestions.

When you got married 6 years ago (recently?) your husband was in the military -- is he STILL in the military? What branch?

You say that his first wife died 7 years ago and you married him 6 years ago. How long did you know him? Did you know his first wife?

Also - when you say "He don't won't be check on his military records", I'm sure that's a typo. Do you mean that he won't let you check on his records? What would you be looking for? Are you looking for verification that he was or is in the military?

Sorry for so many questions, but I'd like to offer suggestions but your message is a bit confusing to me. What are you trying to find out - if your husband is lying to you or if you should have a military card or something else?

No, I didn't realize I made the typos. Yes, I've been knowing him for about 25 year. He has always been a nice guy.He married his first wife in 1972 and she's been dead for a while now. I have been married to him for six years this december. He was in the army. He has three grown children. They are not close to me at all. I can count the times they have been to our house on one hand. I have no relationship with them and he knows it. He say they are grown and he can't make them have a relationhip with me and it may take a little time. All I want to know is why he say I'm not suppose to have a military card. No he was not in the military when I met him and he is not in military now. He is very close to his kids. His daughter is 30 years old and she get $203.00 from his bank account that he had with his first wife before I married him. She get this money every month. He told me several time he was going to have my name added to the account, but he keep putting it off. Should I just leave this matter alone? He just recentely got an american express card for one of his son who is 32 years old and gave him the closing cost for his home he just bought. I have one son. He's 29 and I have not done these things for him. Please give advice. He also paid his three chilren storage fee for 1 year ($98.00). They had some item stored together and he paid it out of our bank account we have together where we live. I told him he should not do this because they are grown as he said they were and he advised them to get their items out of storage and they did.

the silence is deafening. one serious issue is that while nc may not be responsible for man's promise to fiance, there is the potential issue of aids. this changes everything for me. someone's life could be at risk. of course the fiance needs to be told. when nurses are having unprotected sex, and they know all the dangers, it makes me wonder just how careful are most people? there's no way around the truth, even though it's inconvenient and ugly. you are treated by the world in the way you allow yourself to be treated. you must respect yourself and honor yourself. if you manipulate and lie and get "away" with it, as in, the unexpected pg wins you the man, guess what? you're not winning any prize. I wish this weren't true. But I would lay money on it. Be careful where you point your feet, because that's where you're gonna end up.

I have a pretty big rule in my marriage. NEVER say the "D" word. Once it's on the table.... I think clarity is crucial. I've met your husband before. I used to date him when I was 19 :) I was engaged to him at one time as well (my next boyfriend at 21). Then many years later I married him, (yet a different man) and had a baby. I finally divorced him. Sooooo.... obviously it didn't work out for me. And historically I have had really bad taste in men. But here's what I learned: 1. be absolutely clear on what you are going to say. This will prevent him from being able to tangle you up in your feelings so that you sound unsure, and, well, crazy. 2. pick your moment carefully. 3. do it lovingly. do not attack. 4. admit your faults. 5. tell it straight. Honey, can I talk to you for a minute? You remember the other day when I mentioned that I was upset that Ann broke our lunch date for the second time in a row? After we spoke about it I realized that what I really needed from you was for you to listen and empathize with me. I know that you want to fix my problems, but sometimes I just need you to listen. I know I didn't make that clear, and from now on I'm going to try to let you know what I need before telling you about a problem I'm having. When he plays devil's advocate, perhaps try to "get out" of your funk and as jokingly, light as you can, say "hey, whose side are you on, anyway?". If he tells you "it's not a big deal", tell him that you understand that he may feel that way, but you do think it's a big deal, and could he please help you work it out? If he's not willing to deal with you when you are not being defensive or hysterical but are presenting him with your issues calmly and rationally, then he's just not that into you, or he really has no skills in relationship maintenance. In that case you can either drag his sorry butt to a counselor, which most likely will not work because IMO most counselors do not do good unless they are really good and the person going really wants to be there... or you can live with an emotional cripple, but at least you will know what you're dealing with, and you can take your personal issues to girlfriends rather than to him, or you can find a mate who will treat you like the queen you are, emotions and all. I tried the first couple, and eventually ended up doing the last. And since my DH really wants me to be happy, he's willing to discuss just about anything with me, and help me work it out. And since he's willing to do that, I'm willing to drop my issue a lot faster and work through it quicker because I'm not having to defend myself and my thoughts every second. And because of both of those things, I am much happier and healthier. And I don't miss being called crazy at all.

First wanted to thank everyone that has responded. I agree that I should at least try the counseling before breaking up the marriage. I had asked my husband earlier this year to add SD to his health insurance so we can take her to a therapist, he finally agreed it was necessary (this was prior to the incident with my daughter). My husband briefly mentioned to BM that he wanted to take her to talk to someone and she was VERY against it. She said that if that was the case she wanted to be involved in every step, so we became sort of hesitant. However, I have come to realize that we both have to stop making concessions for the BM when she is at the root of most of my SD aggressions toward my family. I found a therapist that is experienced in handling both our marital problems & adolescent aggression and she works weekend hours which is perfect because she is in school and we could take her when she visits her father. Just to clarify I have made many efforts to form a relationship with my SD. However, I also believe that my husband is neither doing my SD or our family any good by ignoring the situation and not dealing with it head-on. Our role as parents is to guide our children to be good, loving human beings with a solid moral center and by not addressing the behavior we are giving her proper direction. I also think I need to take charge of my house and be more proactive when it comes to my SD's behavior. I hope therapy will facilitate this process and the BM will not make a huge issue of it and for once see that this would be cathartic for her. In addition, it would give my husband the opportunity to explain why he was not present for her birth, which her mother "kindly" told her version, in a controlled environment with the direction of a therapist. So, of course, I am hoping for the best and also know that this by no means will be a quick fix but instead a committment which my husband and I are willing to participate in (I have to start somewhere). drcinbd, like Karen, I'm sorry I didn't comment earlier. I wrote comments several times but deleted them because this is a very "hot-button" issue for me. Please do not end this relationship because your children object. If you do, you are abdicating responsibility for your own life to them and that is not healthy. I don't know when we shifted from a society that taught respect for the autonomy of other adults, including parents, to one that expected that life decisions should be made based on the opinions of others, particularly adult children. Before you were a husband or a father, you were most likely a fully-functioning, independent person in your own right. You got an education, built a career, entered into a long, successful marriage and parented five children into independent adulthood. While I suspect you sometimes sought the counsel of others, I doubt you did all of that so successfully by giving others a vote on every decision that you or you and your late wife made. If you end this relationship now, your children will most likely object to the next woman you want to marry, and so on. You will spend the rest of your life without the shared joy of a partner because your children are self-centered and don't want their lives to change in any way. Sadly, life has changed - your wife died and you did not. Have any of the five volunteered to give up their lives to live with you and be your companion for the rest of your life? If they aren't prepared to do that, what right do they have to expect you not to move forward with your life in the way that you choose? Why should you remain alone, because that is what they prefer? How would your remarriage harm them? It isn't like you could or would replace their mother. Employers replace people. Sports teams replace people. Families expand and grow in love because people join and leave them through many different avenues; birth, marriage, adoption, divorce, etc. What happened to loving your parent enough to both want their happiness and respect their autonomy? Please, talk to your love before just ending things. She should have a vote in this, not your children. This is her life, too. From experience, I can tell you that if you marry, there will be unhappy times when your children act on their feelings because you will not be able to shield her or your relationship completely and as their father, you will be hurt. Please remember that however difficult, it is only one part of your life, not the whole. I am married to the man I have loved since I was 17. We've been married for 5 years and in a relationship for 8. We were engaged at 21 but for reasons having nothing to do with our love for one another, he broke things off. He went on to have a very happy 30-year marriage until his wife died after a two-year battle with cancer. He contacted me through Classmates, 9 months after her death, and we built a friendship over months of email correspondence. Eventually, we fell in love again, met in person and began to talk about a future together. There were many challenges and obstacles, but we married 3 years after his late wife's death. My daughters love him and his youngest, while not thrilled, has been accepting and gracious. On the other hand, my husband's oldest daughter was unhappy from the beginning and behaved that way. She estranged herself from her father because she feels that by seeking me out and pursuing a relationship, he disrespected her mother. She has been awful to both of us and blamed me for many things that simply aren't true. I have tried to stay in the background and encouraged my husband to do things with her, without me. Individually and collectively we have tried everything we can think of to make things better. We gave her time and asked only that she be polite when we had to be in the same place. Her dad has spent many hours over the last 7 years listening to her feelings and opinions. He has apologized for his missteps and tried to make amends, but she prefers her version of things. He even agreed to therapy with a therapist of her choosing and went for about 9 months. Despite everything, she is adamant that he should have ended our relationship because she wanted him to and that she is perfectly right to estrange herself from her only living parent because he didn't. But, drcinbd, even with this sadness, we are happy and neither of us has regrets about marrying. Yes, there have been upsets and unhappiness surrounding his daughter's feelings and behavior, but they have not taken away from the joy of having found one another. I was with him this year when his cancer came back and he had to have radiation and chemo. He was my biggest supporter when I struggled to finally finish my degree and then found out (at 60) that I have serious ADHD. Yes, there have been MANY challenges as we worked to build a relationship, but it has been worth it! We are good for each other and to each other, and neither of us regrets our decision to marry, in any way. Yes, there are times when I weary of his daughter's toxicity and wonder why she is so awful to me, but every minute I get to spend with my husband brings me more happiness than all of the misery she has caused, put together. I have never been happier than I am in this marriage, with this man. We will continue to work to reconcile with with his daughter for as long as it takes, but cannot do more. Sorry to be so long-winded. Please do not deprive yourself of the possibility of a joyful and fulfilling marriage with someone who sounds perfect for you. Keep trying with your children, but don't sacrifice two other lives to their selfishness. At 57, you probably have many more years of life ahead. Grab this chance at happiness and hold on tight. HI again, Rabbit - I'm sorry, I guess I really don't know enough about the military to understand or give you advice about the military card.

I don't, for example, understand why you should have (or think you should have) a military card if your husband is no longer in the military. But my lack of understanding is only because I don't know what the cards are for or if a person retains them and whatever benefit they allow if the person, or spouse, is no longer in the military.

It sounds, though, as though your issues and mistrust go far beyond the mere matter of a military card. He's giving his grown children money (his 30 year old daughter gets $203 every month. That's a strange amount, isn't it?) I don't understand how your husband got a credit card FOR his son; do you mean that it's in both of their names? Is yur husband charging things on it and paying on it, too, or is your husband paying his son's bills?

Regarding the $98 storage fee, if your husband and his children had things stored together, it sounds as though that (the $98) might have been his share - did they also pay?

It sounds from your message that you're concerned that he's spending a lot of money on his already grown children. Do his children have problems or are they takers?

I'm sure that there's more to this, of course. But the point seems to be that you mistrust your husband and wonder if he is cheating you.

Let's see...you said that you've known him for 25 years, which must have been about 8 years after he married his first wife. Were you friendly with her, too? You must've also known his children as they were growing up. Were they friendly with you? Or did you just know him (perhaps through work?). If his first wife died 7 years ago that would've been 1998. Was he good to her and share money with her or do you get the sense that she might've had reason to mistrust him, too?

Sorry for all of the questions - I don't mean to be nosy, just trying to help. I guess my advice, at this point and with the information that you've already given, would be to put together a list of all of the reasons you mistrust him (the ones you've listed here and any others), look at them closely to see if they can be explained or if perhaps you're misinterpreting them, and then maybe talk to him, talk to a friend, talk to a clergy person, or perhaps even suggest marriage counseling.

I wouldn't want to be in a relationship where I had so many things that I was questioning.

Are you worrying about being the beneficiary of his military pension if he dies?

As far as him giving his children money for this and that, and you not being put on his bank account - money issues are very important in a relationship. It's time for you to sit down with him and express your concerns, if you don't feel secure in the financial aspect of your marriage.

He is under no obligation to help your adult children however.

I'll address the primary question : Are you entitled to a military ID card? The answer is yes. As a veteran your husband should have a retirees card. Your card would indicate that you are the spouse of a veteran.

There may exceptions to this rule that I'm unaware of such as husband having spent a very short time in military or dishonorable discharge.

Having this card would enable you to enter a military post and shop at the PX as well as participate in some post activities. Also online shopping. Check out AAFES Homepage.

There is a problem for you here. He has to take you to a military post or office and show his ID card and sign the papers.

In the event of his death, you should contact the nearest office of Veterans Affairs* concerning his military pension or any surviving spouses benefits that you may be entitled to.

If your husband becomes ill or disabled he might be entitled to some health care at a Veterans hospital or clinic or to receive reduced price medications.

If you contact Veterans Affairs have ready his social security number, branch of service (Army, navy, etc), rank at retirement, place of seperation (the last post where he worked and signed seperation papers) and the date that he left the service, at least the year, the month and year if possible.

*Veterans Affairs - you should be able to find a listing in the Government section of your phone book, usually blue pages. I'm sure that you could also find something online.

As a retired military person let me clarify this for you. You are only entitled to a military dependent ID only if your husband RETIRED from the military. A lot of people confuse veterans with retirees. A retired veteran has served 20 year or more. A veteran is anyone who has served in the military for less than 20 years. They have no privileges once they are discharged. Those of us who have served 20 or more years retire with full use of the commissary, base exchange and so on.

I'm confused. My husband served for 17 1/2 years. He has a retirees card and I have a card as well. We have full access to the local military base as well as the Commissary/ PX. What gives?

There are or could be many reasons your husband of 17 1/2 years in the service has ut... ...early out...but as a general rule only retirees are allowed military ID cards and the priviledge to use them for shopping or services...

I was in the military for 12 yrs and if your husband did not retire, there are no cards for any of you to have, they give him px and commissary priveleges for a short duration once out the military but thats it, i cant remember now i think its like 6 months. You should have had a dependent ID card while he was in the military which gives you access to the px and commissary and other dependent benefits because you are married to a military person. If he is out now there is no ID card for you to have, you dont get one now
