I would use shower curtain & rod until I have enough $$ to get the frameless shower door.

I have the metal frame door and I hate hate hate it. The stuff that got stuck underneath the metal frame gross me out. :-(

As someone who built a house last year, I feel your pain. I tried to cut back on some things and I regret it. I end up spending more money in the long run, trying to fix up things I don't like. I agree with bellaflora, use the shower curtain until you can save the money to get what you want!

I would go with the curtain as well.

I just purchased a fabric shower curtain Liner from Amazon and am delighted with it. Soft and silky, dries quickly, weighted bottom, and it says to toss in the washing machine to refresh. Only $9 so easy to replace and easy to add a sheer, lace of any fabric/trim to complement your decor.

Definitely the shower curtain. Keep getting estimates as well for the door, there was almost a $500 variation in the quotes I got.

I vote for using shower curtain temporarily. I love the frameless shower doors.

I, too, am feeling the pinch. I just went with a shower curtain in the master bath along with temporary counters in the kitchen. The counters work for now and so does the shower curtain! :)

or DIY the glass door. there are online sources such as wilsonglass.

I don't know if this is an option for you, but due to budget constraints we are going with a glass block.

If you go with the shower curtain, I have always used ceiling height curtains that go as a second rod outside the liner to make it look really pretty. you can use any kind of regular curtains as the shower liner is on the inside. The guys don't like that too much but, it may please your eye until you can do what you want. That is if you have the walls to mount the rods on.

Shower curtain! You have your entire future to finish your bath anyway you want and who is going to see it anyway! Your financial stability is way more important -- shower curtain, for now.

I vote for buying a shower curtain until you pay down your debt and then buying exactly what you really want for your shower door.

That must be quite the door, I received estimates of less than $1k. I am in the same situation, lots of things to do on the house, shower door not a priority. We've been using a curtain (due to the shower layout we really don't even need a curtain).

I vote shower curtain too. It can be replaced in the future.

Leahcate - I was thinking the same thing too and the response could have been either, well it depends or honey you are on the wrong board.

Dang I wish you lived here...I have a door I'd actually give you (you just have to tile to my specs). It's a $3,700 door :O( (Frameless, very thick glass) Our idiot first contractor didn't build to spec and I had to order a new one to fit the space...that hurt!!!

But my answer is going to be the same (unless you want to drive up and pick up mine LOL) go shower curtain and be sure to use tension rods. If you go with the framed door, they'll need to drill into your tile foundation to mount them so in addition to changing out the horrible framed door, you'll have some tough tile repair to do as well, a totally needless expense if a curtain will work.

I'd also do an inner curtain (not plastic please...they make nice cloth, waterproof cloth, liners for under $20 sold everywhere). Then hang a nice curtain that fills the space and matches your lovely new bath so you don't have to look at your temporary solution as a bad thing every day :)

I don't know what type of door you did end up going with, but I saw variations in the thousands between my very thick frameless (and bronze colored) door and what a thinner (or standard) door in clear would have cost. Keep in mind that it might be ok to get a few more bids as long as they have the look you want, unless a heavy door is your dream...then just hang on until you can afford it.

I vote curtain, and keep your eye on CL. You never know what might turn up. But meanwhile, you'll be getting out of debt and that's far more important than either a curtain or a door.

Same boat....only I am seriously considering sticking with the curtain long term, or at least until the economy turns around. (not holding breath...) I had a lot of glass in the last place and became a slave to it while the house was on the market. We put up a "temporary" curtain here and I am liking how it softens the feeling in the bathroom. I sure don't miss keeping the glass clean and there's a lot I can do with one or two thousand bucks in the meantime. I do have to get a new chrome rod and some nice rings...what I have now is leftover beige rod and $1.49 rings we picked up in a hurry.

I would do the curtain too. Overbudget is usually not a good place to be.
Igloo I use a clear plastic liner in order to get as much light into the shower. I have a white shower curtain. How does the fabric liner do with letting in the light?

Same situation here...paid cash for the bathroom and the cash bucket was empty by the time we were ready for frameless doors.

Because of our small-bath layout (be-windowed shower zone is opposite door) we do really want glass some day -- it opens up the space so much! But I've decided I'd rather have a cool 40th birthday trip than a shower door (so far the Extraneous Cash Bucket has $12.83 in it) so the curtain will be around a while, ha.

Because I did want to show off the tile AND -- most importantly -- keep as much weak natural light coming through as possible, I used a cheapo clear liner and topped it with a $20 super-sheer scrim-like Pottery Barn curtain panel in white. [Used their nickel curtain rings-with-clips things to hold everything on.] I push everything to the side once the curtain is dry.

The Wondertex is very bright White and also available in Beige. I can not comment on light as we have a large s/w window in the tub/shower exterior wall. We for years have use a clear liner but love how the fabric dries almost instantly and stacks back to practically nothing compared to the stiff non-breathing vinyl. Just no comparison in the pleasure of changing to fabric. I'm now looking for tiebacks to hold flat to each side of the tub.

We just did shower curtains in the new bathrooms as its the easiest way to refresh the bathroom into the future by switching them out over the years for a new look/color.

Shower curtain.
If you sew at all, make one yourself to hang outside the liner. If you hang the rod higher than usual, you can get an extra long liner at B B & Beyond (the cloth type, soft and washable...I've used them for years...). Then make your curtain with a 2 inch hem at the top, and bang in grommets. Make it long enough to hang almost to the floor, and give it a nice deep hand-sewn hem, so it looks and hangs more like a curtain. Use drapery material, if you can find something lovely you like and that meets your budget...in which case you need two widths. Split one in half and sew it to both sides of the center width, so that you don't have a seam in the middle, and the pattern, whatever it is, is balanced across the whole thing. You can certainly use dressmaker fabric, and if it's at least 40 inches wide, you can use two widths there, too. Very satisfying!
