I've been married to my husband for 8 years and yesterday he told me he wants to go down to the beach with "the guys" by himself this weekend, he said he needed space from me and our pets (one of the dogs ate his sunglasses and bluetooth and I was the one who wanted the dogs, he is not an animal person). He's never asked for this before and it really hurt me that he would need to be away from me for the weekend. We kind of argued about it and he had this list of things about me he was fed up with, and I told him I had a list about him but he just doesn't want to admit that he is a very difficult person to live with. He wants me to be perfect while I have to put up with his faults every single day - ie. plays video games all day long, has no control of his anger, spends money like it's going out of style, snores loud enough to wake the dead etc... I know I have faults too - I'm messy, have no organizational skills, I have pets and I don't clean up after them, I'm forgetful. But I don't think I'm the only one that should change. If I did and everything was perfect, then I would start feeling like I've got a bad deal. Change is a two way street, am I wrong?

my mother always says she wishes dad goes somewhere for the weekend and lets her do her own stuff once in awhile. lol but he is always there for 43 yeas, every weekend. every man i knew wanted 24/7 relationship, want to be always there. they are just more needy than women.

i don't think that it is that bad he wants to go for a weekend, it is not like it is every week and not like he will cheat. let him go and you enjoy your weekend. and I don't blame him wanting to have a break from dogs. i am not a pet person and can relate.

but other than that yes you both should consider what to change not just you. in a meanwhile enjoy your freedom. go do girl stuff.

Alas, one can only change ones self. If it were me, I'd be finding myself something fun to do this weekend too. That's a two way street as well! My husband and I enjoy time together but we also enjoy the freedom to do things on our own. After all, we are adults and really don't need another person policing our actions. I've learned I really enjoy a bit of alone time even if I'm the one left at home. No snoring, no video games blasting, no 24-hour TV, I can watch a movie I've been wanting to see that he wouldn't like. I can have a girlfriend over for a leisurely visit, I don't have to cook, etc. You don't say, but are you thinking something else is going on? Or are you just feeling left out? I have to admit I wouldn't be feeling good about it if we'd just had an argument because that would be all I thought about all weekend. Being alone with just my thoughts is not always a good thing! :-) Good luck.

I live in a condo and my cold frame is on my patio. In the middle of winter, my husband and I got a notice saying that only things that "belonged" on a patio, ie: grills and patio furniture, were allowed on patios. Inspectors will follow up and a $50.00 fine would be attached to the monthly fees. YIKES! My husband and I spoke to the Assc. Pres. "Gary", he knew what we doing and told us not to worry. The first year I winter sowed, these were still apartments and we didn't have much of a problem. Back then I had offered Gary flowers for his small space, so he knew what I was doing. At the next HOA meeting after receiving the notice, I asked for permission to plant my Morning Glories on the fence around the pool area and it was granted. My suggestions... spread out your extras! Gorilla Garden in public areas, adding just a SMALL amount of color here and there. You will win over your neighbors and create allies at the same time. Give them flowers! Your close neighbors will probably the first ones to complain or to hear one. If they are given any extras, or offered extras, they will either NOT complain to your HOA or they will defend you if they hear a complaint from someone else, possibly preventing your HOA from hearing it! Stay on top of your HOA meetings, you want them to know you and to know that you really do care about the community. It's easier to "forgive" someone who's intentions have always been known to be good. It might also give you more warning if someone might be complaining or is unhappy with your "pot ghetto".

Ok let's talk about codes. I have found the CABO/ICC building codes to cover the critical design elements of a house very well with only a few exceptions because the minimum is often the optimum for such a lightly loaded short structure. If you designed joists using the formulas you were taught in school they would be the same as you would get using the code tables except in borderline cases the code always rounds upward and doesn't adjust for poorly graded lumber, etc. The IRC requires LVL's and I-joists to be designed by an engineer but in Maine the state law allows a builder to do that if he/she submits the manufacturer's sizing tables and the loading conditions with the drawings for the building permit. The state law was changed to exempt a builder from the prohibition of practicing engineering for a house in 07, so you can imagine what an architect's license means in Maine. I don't think Vermont even has a residential building code yet and there are other states that are similar or where the code is adopted or not adopted by each county and enforcement is not consistent due to lack of staff. Anyway, the biggest deficiency to the codes that I know of is the flexibility of floor joists. The deflection limit at maximum loading is intended to prevent ceiling plaster from cracking and is not very helpful. Many long span joists are legal but excessively bouncy and there are no simple rules of thumb that eliminate this problem. I tried to write one and a week later I couldn't understand it. Unfortunately bridging and blocking have been found to do little to stiffen typical joist sizes. I also find the ICC foundation section to be inadequate but the code allows the option to use ACI318 which is an excellent standard and design guide but any code standard must be limited to a maximum amount of unbalanced fill; an engineer would be needed to design a cantilevered retaining wall. The code deals with typical regional wind and snow loads pretty well but not high wind, drifted snow and earthquake loads. At any rate, I won't design anything without an engineer involved even if he isn't required to stamp the drawings. I like his insurance policy a lot. I think a contractor could use the building code as a defense in court but it would be of less use for a licensed design professional. For me the medical analogies are interesting but not realistic. It is still acceptable in certain parts of the US to build your own house without any oversight or control by anyone (except possibly the local electric coo-op) and this idea is considered a right to many. I think the practice of medicine has advanced considerably farther than the house building industry.

Rosie: When I was growing up, my mother made me clean my room, help with the cooking, clean the kitchen after dinner and other miscellaneous chores (my mother didn't work). I did not however, mow the grass, scrub the floors, do the grocery shopping, wash the families (6 of us) laundry, help the others with their homework, pay the bills, plant the garden (although I did help weed and pick the vegetables), maintanin the cars and other household appliances. My mother worked very hard at home raising 4 kids while my father worked 12 hours, 7 days a week at Fords to provide for the family. I also went to school and got very good grades, participated in the band and played softball in the summer. At the time, I thought she was the meanest mother in the world, but when I got married at 20, I found out that I had no problem keeping a house, working full time, going to school at night and eventually having children. I was capable of doing all this because my mother prepared me for adulthood. I am very gratefully for that now. Take my stepdaughter for example. I entered her life when she was 15 (she is now 18). She lived with her mother for a few months in the beginning, but decided she preferred to live with her dad and I (and my boys)full time. She did not assist me in any way with anything to do with the house, but was very demanding about being driven here and there and asking for money as if it grew on trees. I asked for her help ie: taking her own dishes off the table and putting them in the dishwasher, etc, and she said she shouldn't have to do that because her mother made her do those things when she was 4 years old. This seemed to be a common excuse which her father and grandmother (who lived with them for 4 years) says did not happen. I didn't want to be a b**chy stepmother , so I didn't press the issue. She was getting good grades in school and was a cheerleader so I figured her time was better spent on those activities. Big mistake!!! She is now 18 and can't even make it out of bed for a 10:00 class at college. She has been late for work many times because she "just slept in" (I can't believe they haven't fired her). Her claim now is that she is 18 and is legally an adult and we cannot ask her to do anything. She began college in September and has now dropped out because she cannot balance, work (20 hrs wk), school 4 classes and socializing with her friends. She demands to be treated like an adult,but was never made to accept any responsibility, so she doesn't know how to act like an adult. I firmly believe that if she had been made to be a part of the family and take responsibility for helping in the running of the household, she would be better prepared for "adulthood". So now we have a disrespectful, inconsiderate, lazy 18 year old in our house that causes a terrible disruption to the rest of the family. How am I supposed to teach my boys how to be proper, respectful, considerate young men when they have an example just the opposite in the household? We have now thrown away $2500.00 in college tuition (which we can't afford) and she has forfeited a $2500.00 MEAP scholarship. What a waste!!! But let's not forget, she has lots of time to socialize with her friends now!!!!! That is really going to get her far in life. Kids need to know that life is not easy and having them help around the house is not going to cause them any harm.

Thanks to everyone that responded. The problem is not one of "aesthetics"; i.e., lateral branches that "overhang" our property. The multiple vertical trunks and attendant foliage of the tree have grown straight up..ENGULFING the wires over the last twelve years. ATT's phone lines/cable co.'s wires have literally been embedded in the top canopy of this tree. The main drop(s) for the shared phone/cable lines run fairly parallel to the street. The single drop to our house runs perpendicular to this st. line, and our drop had run through the canopy of said tree. The cable tech came out to inspect causes for cable service degradation. He id'd the completely abraded line in the tree. He then re-located the attachment point for our drop farther away from the tree canopy. SCE came by 6 weeks later, to trim any trees that had grown into SCE's 18" clearance requirements. SCE did use a cherry picker to trim the very apex of the problem tree's height to clear that 18" distance. The ATT/cable wires embedded in the vertical trunks is screamingly clear NOW to anyone. Still, we cannot sign a contract with any reputable arborist (to clean up the tree further) because the tree is on another homeowner's property. The overreaching problem is one of disregard for other people's property rights: i.e., trespassing and causing damage to property. Historically, this neighbor had hired casual workers to trim the lower part of the tree and hedges and he did not give us any warning so that we could move or protect our specimen plants. His workers let the branches smash our landscaping, and then dragged them over our property attempting to clean it up. When we showed him the damage, he laughed and made jokes about the worker's ethnicity. All the guy EVER HAD TO DO was act as a responsible property owner and hire an arborist to properly prune back his tree years ago.

My husband's perfect, but I still like my space!

Well OK, he's not completely perfect -- But the idea is that "wanting a little space" and "can't stand you anymore" are two very different things, and when he says one, but you react like he says the other -- Well, then you're making a mountain out of a molehill.

Kalahari's got the right idea. Apologize and tell him you reacted like an idiot, and to go and have a great, relaxing, fun time and that you will do the same. Then get a great book or rent a chick flick, buy your favorite foods that he doesn't care for, play with your pups, and have a 'yourself weekend'. Don't call him more than once and be happy to see him when he gets home.

Oh, and clean up after your pets.
Asking a non-pet-lover to accept a dog is one thing, but making him put up with piddle and poop and half-eaten chew toys is not a fair compromise. A well-trained, well-behaved dog is the kind of pet that changes folks into dog-lovers. An under-trained dog can spoil the entire species...

Hmmm, well the only thing that bothers me about the exchange is the arguement, but that's done so let him have his weekend & you enjoy your weekend.

My DH loves animals but is not a pet person. I brought home a dog and she became "his" bay. So I got a second dog that's my baby, lol.. But I will say I am in charge of cleaning out the litter box and scoopig the poop and that's ok with me.

DH is gone much of the time so it really doesn't affect him much anyhow.

It's good for couples to have their seperate time too,maybe you could plan a girlfriends trip or activity every few months or so and get away yourself...

Hey guys, thanks so much for the responses. I agree I did totally overreact. I guess what bothered me was the long list of "marital problems" he felt the need to state as a reason why he was needing the weekend away. As if hanging out with his buddies for a couple of days is going to solve the problems. And I'll probably be thinking about it the whole weekend. I am willing to make some changes in myself but I just feel like he hates me and has given up :(

Living with someone you don't like living with is a drag. Sounds like family meeting time to me. Neither one of you are feeling good about things right now. Why not sort it out and get going again?

I totally agree, it is time to sit down and discuss everything. Everytime we try, though, it ends up being this blame game and finger pointing, like "you do this.." "yeah, but you do THAT" and then it makes him even more angry. I'm going to see if he will want to talk about things tonight.

There are different ways than that to talk/discuss/argue. I have little doubt you both know what they are. Suggest discussing that first. Trading blame doesn't go anywhere. Suggest agreeing in the beginning that anger has no place. There are problems to solve here. If he has a case to state, he should be allowed to state it....as should you. If he's deficient, he should own it....as you should also. Does he WANT to change this or does he just want out? How about you? If there's no goal, discussion is pointless.

Compromise is the goal. Say things like "I will clean up after the dogs if you vacuume the floor." I would find it difficult to deal with dogs, as I am not a dog person. I think you might be stretching things there.

Is he overweight, why does he snore ? Could be serious health issues here.

Improve your behavior, he may see that you are making the effort and act accordingly.

Agree with others, be happy for him to have a w/e away with his friends. Sounds like bliss to me ! (for you I mean lol).

Change is indeed a two way street in your marriage.

He was wrong to present his trip as a punishment for things that you and your pets have done. That is a bad precedent. Instead, he should have just said that he needed some time with his buddies.

Tell him that you are willing to make some immediate changes, and you are hoping that he can spend the weekend away thinking about some of the things he would like to change about his behavior. When he comes home, you both should discuss your new list of positive changes.

Count it as a blessing! Get out of the house while he's gone and do something for yourself. Reconnect with the world. When he comes back, thank him for giving you your space.

I can understand your dh wanting alone time. Before we had kids DH and often went our own ways and did things on the weekends, but now that we have 3 kids and one on the way we are pretty much homebodies and I kinda miss the freedom to just go and do what I want to do. So enjoy it.

As to your husband and your lists of things, are you sure you haven't been looking into my life??? We deal with much the same issues. If you need to vent feel free to email me. I know that it is frustrating and when both you and DH go through a list of faults it only serves to frustrate both of you and doesn't solve any problems.

Hi Jenn,

Please let us know how it is going with you. A weekend away is ok for your husband as long as it's done in a positive way.

The bigger issue is how you both are going to deal with the list of things that upset you about the other person.
Hopefully, you both are talking through these issues.
