Painting my family room

When I bought my house, the family room was yellow but needed to be repainted. I painted one shorter wall a dark chocolate brown and then for two years thought about what else to do. I finally painted the opposite wall the same color and am now painting the two other walls a soft blue. I got area rugs to go with the colors and now just need to get fabric to make a couple of curtains. Here is what I have done with the walls.

Well, Linda...this is nice but I'd like to see the WHOLE room to get the WHOLE effect....ya know?

You've blended two colors I would not normally associate with the other and it is very pretty.

I can't show you the whole room yet Lori, it is a disaster. I still need to paint the opposite wall blue and then this spring my washer and dryer will be moved from the basement up to the main floor and have a closet built around them in this room. It has always been my catch-all room. My house is only 986 sq. ft. and I am not the most organized person. Help, I need a professional organizer to help me.

I love the room that yaya posted, and honestly think aqua would complement your coral kitchen. But I don't think the aqua works at all with your curtains or art. I am a little confused re: why you don't think you can replace the art; if you look for a poster or print on art.com or a similar site, you could just keep your existing frame and put in a different print, for less than you're likely to spend on paint. But you do need to find something that coordinates with the drapes. I think a pale green would complement your coral kitchen better than a blonde color; the kitchen is bright and cheerful and beachy (which is why the aquas would complement that well) whereas blonde is more muted and subdued. I don't have any paint decks, but for a green, I'd suggest something that is a pale celery color, vs. a more olive-y green. Maybe match the light green that is in the leaves on your curtains. I'd also consider replacing the olive velvet mat in your artwork with a white or off-white mat (you can order custom cut mat inexpensively at pictureframes.com), to make the picture work better with your new wall color, whether you choose gold or green.

Thank you for your kind comments. Trailrunner: I love that chair too. It was a wedding gift to my maternal grandparents which would date it back to the late 1920's. My mother had it recovered several years ago as it is now, and then gave it to me. It is so beautifully worn, IMO. As for the fireplace, juddgirl, I posted a couple of closer-ups so you can see the brick. It is also worn-looking, with undertones of tan, gold, red, brown, and grey. This house was pre-owned, and we didn't choose the brick, but it works.

Wow, colors and monitors are so weird! Thank you so much for doing that moonshadow! RSS looks almost exactly like the middle photo and not as yellow as the top one. GK5040, it does look a little too pinky peachy in the link compared to the actual color sample, I hesitated to put that link on here for that reason. I do like the second photo that moonshadow did. The lighting in the picture I took is awful. The carpet is actually a very light tan, not grayish green!

Color for my tray ceiling

Repaint. When you use the wall paint on the ceiling you have to cut the color by half or the ceiling will appear twice as dark as the walls.......which yours does. This is barely a tray, and I would have just painted the whole ceiling white to add some height to the room. Here is your room with the white color on the ceiling. I don't know what circumstances led you to select this paint color for your room, but it leans green and your stonework leans red. Revere Pewter would have been lighter and more neutral.

Leslie, it is an added on room about 12 x 20. It is supposed to be a dining room/family room combo. Since I want to move the laundry to the main floor, this room is the only one I can move it to. I will stack my front loaders and then have them enclosed. I also have my dining room table and hutch in here and my portable fireplace, tv and computer and a couple of easy chairs. Oh, and it is also my sewing room. I keep my sewing machine out on a desk here in front of the picture window that looks out into my back yard.
