Wisdom Teeth - talk to me

A forum search found lots of info about Annie's Ashley who had her WT pulled earlier this year, but no specific threads for nutrition.

When I had mine out, back in dinosaur days, my future husband came over and made me applesauce from scratch. That's when I knew he was a keeper.

I'll take any and all food (and recovery!) suggestions, including the obvious yogurts, smoothies, pureed soups. I'm sure I can learn a new trick or two. I'm sure that the ideas I don't use (kosher stuff etc.) will be helpful to others, so bring it on even if you know I wouldn't feed DS ham and pea soup.

Stocking up on frozen peas. DS goes under the knife sometime in the next month.

I'm still healing from having one out. No swishing, no straws.

Soft meatloaf, mashed potatoes, macc n cheese, noodles in chicken broth, jello, ice cream, bananas, scrambled eggs, grits, deviled eggs (no relish), yogurt...

Nothing hard; popcorn, nuts, nothing crunchy.

Good Luck to your boy. My niece will have hers out at the end of this month; all 4 as well.

About two days was all Ashley paid any attentionm then she went somewhere with friends and ate venison steak!

The first day she was just groggy and didn't want much anyway, The second day she has mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, pudding, ice cream, yogurt, C of M soup. Yeah, from a can.

?Day three she started out OK, then went for the steak. After that, she was pretty much OK, but really liked the sloppy joes!

I just found the FL forum, I have been posting in the Tomato forum the whole time! lol. Steve, I am very close to you as well, right off 1-75 and Fletcher(USF exit), next exit down from David. I live on a cattle farm, and am only a 3rd year gardener, so I have much to learn as well. I am currently limiting myself to tomatoes and peppers, I love salsa and hot foods. I tried lettuce/broccoli/carrots/radishes, but the lettuce and broccoli didnt do too good. I have some pepper plants that are a couple years old now, I just cover them durring frost. This winter I am going to try using water jugs durring frost. The big Zepherhills water jugs, just cut off the bottom and put it over the plant. Its like a mini greenhouse. I start pepper seeds in November for a March 1st plant out. I currently have 3 bhut jolokia(ghost chili/current world record holder) seedlings going. And should have some more cool varieties from the tomato/pepper exchange. For tomatoes I try to follow the 2-season approach. I start seeds January 1st, plant out March 1st. Then I start seeds July 1st, plant out Sept 1st. I might try to get some shade cloth and try to get them through the summer next year. -Corey

Removing Wisdom Teeth after the age of 50

    Q

    Comments (7)
I'm not 50,but I still have ONE of my wisdom teeth left. I had them removed one at a time over the years when they seperately started bothering me. I have known two people who had them ALL removed at the same time, and they were MISERABLE for days and their faces swelled something awful. However, there is something to be said for getting it all over and done with in one time. The one I have left is turned completely side ways, and I'm pretty sure that might be a problem removing it.It doesnt bother me at all so I let it be. I have dreaded each time with the other teeth.I didnt get all the drugs and stuff, just novacaine. You may feel better with them out though. I felt like my mouth wasnt as crowded.

I need help, is the wisdom teeth coming out?

    Q

    Comments (4)
Hope you got your teeth problem solved. Best way to tell if wisdom tooth coming in sideways against tooth next to it is open your mouth & look with a flashlight, may need a friend to look if on top & see if there is a tooth part way through or top doesn't look like it should. If it is coming in sideways it can get very painfully. I had 1 like that. They can come in any age from around 17 to 40 or so. I was in late 30's when I had 3 taken out. There was no 4th 1. 2 had come in 1 looking fairly normal but hurting when I ate & other sideways. 3rd 1 was not out yet but in odd position so I was put under & had it all done same day. Then you have to have food & drink that is pretty much room temp for several days. I thought I could drink Iced Tea & I ended up looking like I had mumps, told dentist I thought ice was good for injury etc. He said, not in the mouth!!! So take a good look & see what is going on. If there is no tooth but gum is very painful something else may be going on. Good Luck!

Well we don't know what happen in court but DH's uncle works in court not where she was. He told DH that she can't drop a DOV anymore. They had to have both appeared. The Felony Theif charge didn't go away on its own either but again we have no idea. All we know is the night before court they were all going out for Ice Cream like a big happy family! Social Service would be wonderful if it would help. The thing is when we called the police that night. Soc Ser said that they wouldn't open a case unless the police found reason to do so. I don't know maybe I should try again. We live in another county. If I do it I will look like a jeolous SM. DH will not do it because he is afraid of how it will effect the kids and how they might hold it against him and or me. Or that she will not allow him to see the kids. I think he needs to put her in her place because she is doing wrong by the kids. To top it all off, Last night SS told DH that he and his sister aren't planning on coming this weekend unless we have something good planned to do. Next weekend we was planning on taking them an extra weekend to go on a fishing trip. He don't think he wants to do that either. (I think they are afraid to come that they might spill BM beans) They don't know we know all but the details already.

The kid nixed scrambled eggs and egg salad [insert crying jpg] but wants my pea soup - I make it with turkey 'ham'.

He did request jamba juice type peanut butter and chocolate smoothies, I'll shoot for that, anyone want to type me out a recipe?

I had mine out on a Friday, took pain meds on Saturday and one on Sunday morning.... felt great. I had to go to work on Monday morning, so I couldn't take any --- I was the only pharmacist at work and couldn't be drugged! I felt terrible that morning and it just kept getting worse. Finally, one of the surgeons gave me something for the pain and they put me in one of the hospital beds and kept me at the hospital so that "officially" they had a pharmacist in the building. I was totally useless that day at work.

My daughter CHOSE to have them pulled two day before Thanksgiving. She pointed out to me that mashed potatoes and gravy, bread stuffing, jellied cranberry sauce, jello salad, deviled eggs, candied yams and the middle of the pumpkin pie were ALL soft foods. She even nibbled a tiny bit of turkey.

Same thing couple of days, no drugs, pretty much back to normal. Kids bounce back fast.

    DS #1 or #2?

Non food tip: Take a roll of paper towels with you and/or wet wash cloths. There can be pretty yucky drooling goin' on. Sorry...........I know this is a food site........

Food? He can have food? I don't remember eating at all! My nightmare experience involved too much numbing so I could only do 2 the first time and had to go back to get the other two out a different time. Dry socket from H@!! and gel fixes even on Sunday to keep the pain at bay. [[[[shudder]]]]

Sorry, I'm sure your boy will have it much easier, J. A milk shake sounds good to me!

The speed of recovery depends on the amount of trauma involved in the surgery. Badly impacted teeth involve a lot of digging and chipping...just yanking them out is a lot easier....and "sort of impacted" is also different.
I had mine out one at a time when I had kids to take care of. The first awful one first, for a dry socket antibiotics packed the tooth awful time....neighbors bring in food for my starving children....the other 3 were a piece of cake.
    So it all depends.

I don't know his food tastes, but I would definitely do some slightly overcooked risotto with his favorite flavors in it. I would leave it a little on the thin side. And I see no reason he couldn't have eggs over medium if they aren't browned. Popsickles, ice cream, potato soup with no lumps is very good. And homemade cream of most anything he likes soup would be terrific. Just no straws!

Good luck to both Mom and Pop!

Ashley and I both had impacted teeth, our dentist is the only man who has ever said our mouths aren't big enough!

I had mine out a million years ago, before they knocked you out, while they were still done in a dentist's office. Two at a time, one side at a time. I went back to work the next day both times because I was young and poor and didn't have any option. I felt like carp.

Ashley had them all out on a Friday and went back to school on Monday and felt "OK". The dissolving stitches did not dissolve, and she had to go back for that. Since she was driving back and forth to school she couldn't take the pain meds and drive, and she was still OK.

I think younger is easier, and if you're still at home and have Mom to take care of you, it's even easier!

I had mine out over 20 years ago, and mine were impacted and I have a small mouth. Getting the teeth out stressed my jaw muscles so much I couldn't actually open my mouth wide enough for anything but a straw for about two weeks. I had a lot of custard and pureed stew :-) I also remember going to a party where they had a spit roast and I cut really really thin slivers of meat so I could slip them in through my slit of a mouth :-(

Soft boiled eggs worked for me.

Get whey protein powder supplement - usually comes in vanilla, choc, strawberry flavors. I get the chocolate flavor and put it in smoothies. Lindberg nutrition usually has deals. TJs has their own brand as well.

Deanna, I was seriously looking at Thanksgiving as well, but one tooth on the xray looks like it's about to go laterally volcanic. He isn't symptomatic at all right now but this being his senior HS year - I'd rather him not risk emergency time out of school.

Awww Teresa! I hope he is OK too.

Annie 'younger is easier' - amen. I had mine out when I was 21 or 22, not living at home, my parents were out of the country and the doctor trusted me that they would pay when they got back (they did). My roomates and really hot, cute neighbor took care of me, grin.

Beverly - risotto - leads me to rice pudding! YES! Good one for the list. I'll have to talk more eggs with him, he really dissed that idea. Colleen's custard would fly.

Gina, great minds - I was going to check out TJ's protein powder. I've never looked at the stuff, much less ingested it. I'll have to go elsewhere for wheat germ if I want to add that to smoothies.

Did you all eat smoothies with a spoon?

Oh crud, I don't know how I could have not seen the "DS" in your first post and thought you were talking about your DH. I wouldn't not have mentioned a fried egg or risotto for a teenager, so I'm glad it lead you to rice pudding. I agree with the others since it's your DS, he's going to need as much protein as possible because he is going to need something to make him feel like he has eaten.

When my 4 were done by the 3rd day I felt fine but can say no matter how good one feels "NO POPCORN".

The most common movements to get a socket bleeding are smoking or using a straw so smoothies would have to be drunk from the cup.

For a different perspective, DD had two impacted wisdom teeth removed earlier this year. The Army relieved her of duty for 36 hours (it would have been 24 if they were not impacted) and she was given a list of suggestions of what she should or shouldn't eat from the mess hall or PX snack bar and a few cheese omelet MRE's in case none of the foods fit the bill that week. She said she did OK with scrambled eggs, tuna salad, milkshake without a straw, the broth of whatever soup they had, etc.

I'd stay away from things with "pieces" like rice for at least the first 2 days. His mouth won't work properly to get any pieces to go down properly.
Our dentist recommends, after an extraction, rinsing with salt water by holding it in your mouth and shaking your head. LOL! He says the important thing is to get rid of any food bits and blood without doing the swish thing.
    Linda C

LindaC, the doc gave Ashley a syringe to rinse out the back of her mouth, no swishing.

She drank milk shakes from the glass, but she let them melt a bit first.

Oh, and liquid jello, warm, before it sets up. Ugh, but she liked it, although I'm still confused as to how it adds any nutrition at all other than sugar...

    Annie

Whenever I have extensive dental work done, the ONLY thing I want is Swanson's chicken broth and buttered whole wheat toast.

Don't ask me why, but that's what I have always wanted.

I had a tooth out last year, and that's the only thing I wanted to eat for about 48 hours.

Meat cut into small bits like Colleen had. The idea is not to suck on anything that might pull out the blood clots. I was ordered not to smoke cigarettes for that reason... the second day I pulled the filter off one so I could get a nicotine fix with a light draw. Hopefully DS does not smoke but... well I was a stupid kid once upon a time.

A military dentist pulled all four of mine. He had to climb up on my chest to get at them but I was not hurt and he did an excellent job... no complications! Dentists are still amazed by the tooth in the middle of the roof of my mouth where it was pushed by my wisdom teeth. Silly military considers it cosmetic until they actually cause a problem. You would think enlisting thousands of young people that age they would plan to deal with it rather then avoid it.... funny the guys on the recruiting posters always have perfect smiles.

I lived on chicken nuggets for a few days. McD's had just come out with them. My sister lived on Dad's giant spatzel noodles. A bowl of raw eggs mix in enough flour to make a fairly stiff batter. A bit of parsley flakes for color/flavor. Drop by the spoonful into boiling water. They float when done... pick out with a slotted spoon. We always ate them with chicken gravy.

Pea soup makes just fine with a couple drops of liquid hickory smoke! No need for meat at all. Meat is nice but sometimes I'm lazy enough to just do peas, water, and a bit of smoke... makes pretty good soup for being so simple. Just be careful with that liquid smoke... it is strong and comes out quick... half drop a quart. About a buck a bottle that will last a long time.

No recipes but he needs lots of protien.

My girls had their WT pulled their senior year in HS. Lot's of drama for about 3 days, but, they are girls ;-) Logan had no WT...I hear that is becoming more and more common. Evolution?

Jess, We have yogurt and fruit smoothies almost every day. I started adding protein to mine because I needed it for working out and ping pong. I need more energy to last through the workout and also as the post-workout replenishment. We add some milk or juice to the smoothie to make it drinkable - no straw needed.

Karen I had only 3, and still have them. Although 2 other teeth were pulled when I got braces. Interesting about the evolution.

Mine were impacted and I was swollen like a chipmunk for at least 5 days. Honestly, the first few days, food was the last thing on my mind. I took my pain pills religiously and slept with the frozen peas on my face. I had no idea the whole process was going to be so traumatic so I had scheduled it the week of Christmas. I think the only thing I ate that Christmas was a few bites of mashed potatoes. Not fun. Hope everything goes smoothly for DS. Good luck!

I've got no advice here - all my wisdom teeth are still firmly impacted in-situ.

I had a dentist way back when I was about 30 who mentioned at every appointment that I really should have them taken out, as it would cause me much pain and discomfort if I had to have them taken out when I was older.

I finally shut him up by explaining that he was asking me to exchange possible future pain and suffering for certain present pain and suffering, and the logic just didn't make sense, especially when I would have to pay $$$ for it!

My mom kept hers until she was past 90, and needed all her teeth extracted for dentures. I don't think the wisdom teeth added any extra to her ordeal.

I had all four of mine pulled out in early May, 2 were impacted. I had an applesauce, rice pudding, chocolate pudding, and vicodin diet for almost 3 days. On the night of the 3rd day, DH was having some friends over. I was soo hungry and just wanted "real" food. DH texted his two friends and one of them pulled through and brought me a can of Spaghettio's that he had kindly picked up on his way over. I felt so much better and it was the best can of Spaghettio's ever.
I had a syringe to rinse with too, I would definatly suggest asking for one if you don't recieve it in your after care package. I also suggest avoiding lettuce until things are mostly healed up. I tried it after about a week and it was the worst thing to get out.

I've had 3 out; 1 single and 2 others at the same time. Believe it or not--NO pain!

I had mine taken out about a million years ago... About the only things I remember is that I stuffed myself before the surgery, the dentist told me not to eat anything that was really hot or really cold for the rest of the week, took pain pills as soon as I got home then sleep until the next afternoon, that I had a very short fuse for about 3 days and that I ended up with dry socket in the lower right... ( I guess dry socket is when you get a calcium deposit in the spot the tooth was in... ? )

Jessica, I hope your son makes it through without ANY problems...

    Hugs,
    Rita

A dry socket is caused by losing the blood clot that forms where the tooth was....allowing bacteria in and infection to develop.
    Don't suck on a straw!

I love all the stories, and thanks for all the advice. The surgeon's office was impressed with my breadth of knowledge and questions (like syringes etc.).

He had it done this morning and he was texting in the car on the way home to his friends and calling to 'talk' to them before the slur wore off, the brat.

Rotton kid...he won't be talking so much when the novacane wears off!

Figures. It huirts us more than it hurts them, I think.

Jessica, to heck with the kid, have a glass of wine yourself!

    Annie

I hope your son heals quickly - and that he is not one of the 2-3% of the population that have supernumerary teeth. That is there are extra teeth buds behind/under your original set of 32 teeth.

I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed when I was 18. I had to have all 4 removed again when I was in my mid 20's. And at the age of 37 my jaw started to hurt and 2 more very small mollers were coming in on my lower jaw.

Fortunetely, I never had any trouble with the removal - all 3 times it was clear sailing.

It was done TODAY?? Oh my gosh. I thought we had another month. haha!!

So how is he now that the numbness has worn off? Hope all is well.

Teresa you are one for the medical books...very VERY rare to have supernumerary teeth in all 4 quadrants....and to have them emerge! And then have 2 more emerge!
Were you near a teaching hospital associated with a dental school? I'll bet they would have love to see your Xrays!!...didn't they know about the extra teeth before they emerged?
Do you have other jaw issues too? Cleft palate? That very often goes with supernumerary teeth.
I'll bet you were about ready to have it over with!!
What a thing to tell Jessie when she just has gone through one bout...but I am sure they did a panoramic xray on her baby boy...but maybe they are just not telling!!

I was told about 20 years ago that I have additional teeth "buds" in the roof of my mouth. Fortunately they remain buds.

I had TMJ the third time around. That's why the jaw hurt. When they exrayed for jaw damage they noticed the new mollers. And more pics showed the buds in the roof of my mouth. The TMJ vanished when the two extra mollers were removed.

Both the 2nd and 3rd extractions were done at the University of Minnesota Dental School. At that time they told me that as much as 4% of the population have extra teeth buds.

Current info on the condition say it's more like 1-3%.

Was I ready to be done with it? I was more concerned with the cost if I continued to sprout more! And for someone that can sprout teeth left and right it has not kept the early stages of osteo at bay. That's why I took up lifting weights and running. Need those weight bearing exercises.

OMG! Extra teeth! I've never ever heard of that. Missing teeth but not extra teeth! Whoa!

Jessica, I hope DS is doing well and this will all be a distant memory soon.

It was soooo funny to watch him get the Jamba juice down - I woke him up to take his first round of meds. Dripping Choco-Moo everywhere and he wasn't still awake. He also had some chocolate pudding, he said it tasted funny. I'll put that down to his tongue feeling three times its size and any residual chemicals in his mouth.

At 6:00ish he was ravenous - so much for not wanting to eat the first day (he went under the knife around 10:30ish) - so he did eat two scrambled eggs with butter, Tuscan Sunset (Penzeys), shredded mozzarella and a bit of salt - he thought I was going to serve him plain, unseasoned eggs, ugh. He then ate a small container of applesauce, and wanted more - so I made and he ate most of one pound of Yukon gold mashed potatoes with lots of butter and whole milk. So much for lots of smoothies!

Yep, he is a man! LOL! Loving those carbs!

Glad he is up to eating!

    LOL!! Remember what they said....protein!!
Glad he's not feeling horrible...is he texting now or sleeping?
    Linda C

Puree some kind of meat on the next round of taters.
That'll get some protein down him.
Yogurt, cheese and milk all have some.

What about refried beans 'n' cheese?

And is that pea soup made yet? Lots of protein in peas. It's one we don't always think about.

    Feel better DS#1!!

    Deanna

Good idea Deanna, I have refried beans and cheese.

Pea soup is on the menu for lunch tomorrow, and I'll blend in some turkey.

I'll add dried non-fat dried milk in where I can as well, I forgot about how high protein that stuff is.

I'm glad that he's eating and not feeling too badly. But how did I miss that it was now-- thought you said next month!
Ice and protein is the way to get through it! Give him a healing hug from me!

Very glad to hear he is on the mend. Keep pushing that protein!

    Alexa

So glad he's doing well. It wasn't so bad afterall. You just never know which way it's going to go though.

    Beverly

Sounds like he's doing good. Yay! In another day he'll be back to normal...what ever that is.

    Healing hugs to all.

    Nancy

He's good for now, I suspect he might follow dlynn's footsteps - third or fourth day might be tough. Thats what the vicodin is for, LOL.

Shaun I grabbed a cancellation spot since school starts soon.

Another question for y'all.....for those who know the um er 'anti-digestive' effects of pain killers....should I take any precautions?

    Colace?

Docusate sodium....which maybe the generic for colace.
And if he starts hurting more on the 3rd day...that indicates he has infection somewhere and get him back to the surgeon.
He should feel better each day...unless he does something dumb like chew a wad of bubble gum.
Oh and give him the minimum dosage of the stuff...I took it when I was doing chemo, and they initially prescribed too large a dose....and it comes in capsules, so you can't take half....but if you get the smallest dosage, you CAN take 2 if needed.
