Another Mouse - Computer Kind.

I bought myself a laptop for Christmas and the last few days the mouse has gone wonky. (I bought an external mouse for it as I don't like the mouse scroll on the laptop) My external mouse doesn't go where I want it to go and wanders around the page on its own. The mouse on the laptop keyboard automatically clicks on any link I happen to hover over for more than a second.

Anybody had these issues and know what to do to fix them?

I have a laptop mouse (love those little things!) but sometimes when the cord is pulled out all the way or is tangled, it does that. Make sure the mouse is pointed properly. It will do that if it is pointed upside down.

Check your scroll-lock key to be sure it isn't on. Make sure the mouse is plugged into the correct port or port-type. You may try re-booting w/o the mouse and then plugging it in again afterwards to be sure it is picking up the correct accessory. I do know there are settings you can change in the Control Panel, can't remember from when I had that problem long ago.

Maybe someone else has some info - good luck!

When mine does that, I know it is time to replace the batteries.

ditnc, They are Jack Russell Terriers. Very small and cute and also extremely active and prey driven. They are great if you have an active lifestyle and most importantly a sense of humor...LOL Yea, not spoiled at all. They sleep in the bed, sideways and stretched out, mind you. They turn their head to the side and look at me like I am crazy when I tell them that some dogs sleep outside...LOL. They get home prepared food every day. They have 2 freezers full of meat in the garage. I have only one fridge for us in the kitchen. I think they eat better than we do. Extensive collection of collars and winter coats...I can go on...LOL. They are my children. Sadie, the one in the first pic, has her own strawberry pot as well. My current foster dog, not pictured, is very fond of apricots and ate every one that fell off the tree this year. Ania

DH laid it in the back floor of the car and then forgot about it. He moved the seat back and squished it (the screen was against the seat and the actual computer part was "possibly" protected since the screen was between it and the seat. I may just have to invest in a hard side case instead of a soft side one. So far I have gotten everything off- still need to dig out the internet bookmarks. I am actually using it right now to send this. The right side of the screen scrolls very quickly by itself (think old B/W TVs where you had to adjust the connected rabbit ears) then there is a giant white section and then the left 1/3 of the screen works but has black sports the size of a silver dollar. I just ran my statistical software and the analysis is coming out like it did this morning. This is a snapshot of the laptop screen (I added the red square to show that is supposed to be my desktop. When I do an "Alt+PrtSc" and save it as a picture, I get the whole desktop (hope I do not offend anyone with my pic, it is from LOL-Cat and so cute!) I just used my level and it appears to NOT be warped... tried it on the desk and the floor because the house and desk are both over 100 years old and not that level, themselves... but the button in the level appears to be in the same spot where it is sitting directly on the desk or on the laptop sitting on the desk. Since the alt-print screen show everything and the software appears to be working, am I fairly safe that the computer is okay? What else should I do to check the hard drive? THANK YOU!!!!

With a reboot, change of port and the like that suggests it's the mouse itself. If it's a wireless mouse, it might need new batteries. My experience with wireless ones is that batteries need to be fresh and they don't last long anyway so be sure you get new, fresh batteries - don't try pulling them from the remote control or a clock on the wall... I don't like wireless ones for these reasons. It's a good idea to have an extra mouse anyway. And I'd suggest trying a different mouse. You shouldn't have to install new software with a current operating system unless you're using some special features. It will automatically detect and set it up for you. The other thing that has not been mentioned is whether she's scanned for malware lately. This is one classic symptom of a malware issue but this symptom can be caused by a variety of issues. I think you should try to go into the control panel and change your mouse settings. Your computer may not be recognizing an external mouse.

If this is a wired mouse...

---> If it has a round connector, that's a PS2 connector, and the computer must be turned off when it's plugged in. Then turn it on and boot up. Or, if the machine is already on when you plug in a PS2 mouse, you'll have to restart (reboot) it, in order for the mouse to be recognized.

---> If it has a flat, USB connector, it can be plugged into any available USB port; and the machine can be turned on when the mouse is plugged in. USB equipment should be recognized right away when it's plugged in.

As Dilly_Dally said, you probably should go into Control Panel and click on the icon for "Mouse" and make sure all of the settings are correct.

Also, bear in mind that when an external mouse is plugged into a laptop, it doesn't automatically disable the built-in touchpad on the laptop. If your thumb, or shirt sleeve, etc., brushes across the touchpad, that will affect what the pointer does and where it ends up.

I assume it's an optical mouse. Try wiping off the bottom where the light is. Dirt will make it do strange things. And I'd suggest you turn off the touchpad mouse on the computer since you don't use it.

Thanks for all that advice, muchly appreciated. I did clean the light and I turned up the mouse speed. It seems to be a little better.
I don't see how to turn off the keyboard mouse, I'll have to get my computer tech neighbour to show me that. Actually I'd be happy to just turn off the automatic click on it, as that is very annoying.

I did not see in your first post that you are talking about an optical mouse and not a corded one.

One thing that can affect an optical mouse it the surface you use it on. Use a mouse pad. A shiny reflective surface can make an optical mouse behave erratically.

After trying my neighbour's mouse we came to the conclusion that the optical eye in mine was dead - took it back to Wally World today and got a new one, which works just great!
