Glen, DNA Gardens has a Brown Turkey fig on their website. They say it will produce fruit outside and can be brought in for the winter. It might be interesting to e-mail them. Connie

I think the common Cycas revoluta is common for a reason--it's a great plant with a fair degree of cold tolerance. Mine are too big (and valuable) to do zonal experimenting, but maybe I'll try one year with a smaller one (with some protection). Coonties are just more temperamental in my experience. Your Sago will be fine in a chilly garage as long as frosts are light--keep mine in the 28-60 F range over Winter with some light.--I also like Dioon (overwintered in similar conditions. P.S., Important to keep really DRY over cold season--I think I might water mine once while they're in the garage (December until mid March).

Gary...the lychee is pretty nice sized plant and should easily been ready to flower. I may have watered a bit more than I should have this winter. My head was in a dark place of my anatomy and I was not paying attention to the rules of lychee growing! My Kohala was getting quite tall and bushy at the top only. I may have mentioned this in another post...a very top heavy plant after losing all of the bottom branches. Nothing would/could induce the lower portion of the branches to push new growth. The top is/was growing like mad. So, in a bold, desperate, and quite peeved move, I whacked one of the three main branches to about 8 inches from the crotch. It was now either going to push new growth there or look goofier than it did! It worked. That cut portion is now pushing new growth in several spots. So this weekend I whacked a second branch. Once it starts pushing, I'll nail the third. Should give the plant a more balanced look and stronger too...also won't be so embarrassed when looking at it! Don't know what this will do for any chance of blooms next year but oh well. Had to be done. I tried a couple of times to graft an upper branch to a point down on the main trunk. All failed miserably. So either longans are resistant to grafting...or I'm just really poor at it! I'm leaning more towards being poor at it!

She has alkaline clay with rocks at bottom like mine & less snow in winter: "My hardiest roses are the Canadians. John Davis, John Cabot, Wm. Baffin, Morden Sunrise, Morden Blush and Morden Centennial, Victorian Memory aka Isabelle Skinner, also a Canadian rose. All these only have tiny bit of tip damage and bloom a lot with no special care. Also, my Hybrid Perpetuals only have tip damage after winter. Magna Charta, Mrs. John Laing, Black Prince and Marchesa Buccella. The only negative is they don’t have long enough cutting stems. All my Austins are very hardy. The one I just can not grow is Jude. Leonardo da Vinci is super hardy and always healthy. Quietness comes through winter very well. Even Rouge Royale survives beautifully. Cinderella Fairy Tale is very hardy. Gruss an Aachen also. Ballerina and Marjorie Fair are both hardy. Poseidon, Princess Charlene de Monaco and Crazy Love didn’t do as well as I’d hoped. The surprise losses this year are Quicksilver, and Dames de Chenonceau who is left with only 1 cane. Versigny is also reduced down to almost nothing. This was a mild winter with very little snow.
