Great gift from Annie!

A few minutes ago my cousin showed up on my doorstep with a few tomatoes and she picked up a package for me that I didn't even know was at my door. The package was from Annie! Annie had sent me some fresh garlic which I have never in my life had. All I've had is that stuff in the grocery store that is old, old, old. And there in the box with the garlic was a beautiful jar of her homemade pear preserves! I can't wait to make something with the garlic and tuck into those beautiful preserves. Thanks you so much Annie, especially at a time when you are going through so much.

Wow, all that is going on in her life right now and Annie still makes time for a CF friend!

Fresh garlic in and of itself is a very cool gift, but the pear preserves takes it over the top!

hopefulauthor, I was really just doing my shopping for Christmas and birthdays. With those, and some other non-succulents (13 total plants) my wagon was completely full. I still got away for less than $50. I probably will keep the Cussonia. I bought one last time I was there--C. transvaalensis (also originally intended as a gift) and couldn't part with it. That one--during a 25% off sale--cost me less than $4. These are old pictures. More than half of the foliage has turned red, so it actually looks better: Cussonia transvaalensis from above: Cussonia transvaalensis from the side: You can probably see that the pot is bulging and the soil is also being pushed up on the top. I took a peek--the part you see above ground is only a fraction of the caudex. Hopefully I can get a picture when I repot it. It's the only one I saw that branched into two trunks at the base. I didn't pick it because I was planning on giving it as a gift and the snowflake appearance of the leaves wasn't as clear due to the proximity of the trunks. Oh, well. Here's another plant I regret not buying at my most recent trip. Just my 2 cents that last winter I kept a small Bantel's Sensation in a room where it was usually in the 50s, though sometimes on the weekends I turned the heat up. The only windows were west facing and mostly blocked by the neighbor's house. I did not water the plant until spring when the house was warmer. It survived. It's not the greatest looking specimen in the world, but it's alive. Come to think of it, it hasn't grown much this summer either. I guess my point is the plant can put up with some pretty dismal conditions as long as you're okay with it just sitting there like a stone (and treating it like one). That was more than 2 cents, sorry.

My Great Grandma Annie - Hard Time Getting Through It

PS. Another thing that really gets to me is that I have a child on the way. My first one, though it would have been my great-grandma's FIFTH great-great-grandchild. Family was more important and specail to her than anything else in the world. She was SO HAPPY when I told her that we were expecting. She was just thrilled. We found out ourselves a couple of weeks after she had broken her hip. However my great-grandma already knew! She tried to talk one of my aunts into believing that my wife was pregnant, and after my aunt kept telling her that wasn't the case, great-grandma said "we'll see" and had a very smug look on her face. She knew before we knew! Oh how I wish that Great Grandma Annie could have lived long enough to hold my baby in her arms at least once. It's not due til July, but I thought she might be able to hang in there. I really did. I thought she'd be up and walking again too after her hip healed. Even if only for a while. I thought she had months left, not just weeks. And the fact that she was taken from us right at the beginning of the holiday season also just kills me on the inside. We were so close to having just one more with her. So close. Why were we robbed of it? I know she'll be and is with us all in spirit, but I can't hug a spirit. The loss of the physical touch is the most painful of all. Oh what I'd give to see her smile, hear her laugh, hear her voice, and give her a great big hug just one more time.....

Well, whatcha gonna do? Beverly said she'd NEVER had fresh garlic and there it was, at my local farmer's market, just begging to be sent to Beverly. I needed some too, so some extra just jumped right into the bag.

She didn't tell you that it took me a week to get it mailed, LOL.

The pear preserves are my absolute favorite, Readinglady's recipe, it takes 3 days to make them but it's so worth it.

Enjoy, Beverly, you'll be surprised at the difference in fresh garlic, I think.

What's the best thing of all made with fresh garlic?

Probably too hot for soup now but this is a great recipe. I've halfed the recipe when I just wanted a couple of bowls for myself.

ROASTED GARLIC SOUP WITH PARMESAN CHEESE

26 garlic cloves (unpeeled)
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) butter
2 1/4 cups sliced onions
1 1/2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme
18 garlic cloves, peeled
3 1/2 cups chicken stock or canned low-salt chicken broth
1/2 cup whipping cream
1/2 cup finely grated Parmesan cheese (about 2 ounces)
4 lemon wedges

Preheat oven to 350Â°F. Place 26 garlic cloves in small glass baking dish. Add 2 tablespoons olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper; toss to coat. Cover baking dish tightly with foil and bake until garlic is golden brown and tender, about 45 minutes. Cool. Squeeze garlic between fingertips to release cloves. Transfer cloves to small bowl.

Melt butter in heavy large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onions and thyme and cook until onions are translucent, about 6 minutes. Add roasted garlic and 18 raw garlic cloves and cook 3 minutes. Add chicken stock; cover and simmer until garlic is very tender, about 20 minutes. Working in batches, purÃ©e soup in blender until smooth. Return soup to saucepan; add cream and bring to simmer. Season with salt and pepper. (Can be prepared 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate. Rewarm over medium heat, stirring occasionally.)

Divide grated cheese among 4 bowls and ladle soup over. Squeeze juice of 1 lemon wedge into each bowl and serve.

Serves 4.

Lakeguy, I've got your recipe close at hand and plan on making the soup this week. My husband grows garlic and we love it fresh. Hard to buy it in the store any longer.

I raised my first garlic crop this year. They are all now drying in the garage. I've used 2 heads up...I think I have 14 more. I just go out and pull a stalk out the braid and bring it in the house...they are getting dry enough where I can just snap off 3-4 cloves too..

The local farm I bought the 'seeds' from is where I buy my eating garlic usually too, and in the late fall and early winter she sells it sliced and dried in glass spice jars...OMG the best thing..I crumble the bits a bit in my hand before plopping into the pan/pot. I think if I try the dehdrayting myself...it'll have to go in the garage...I love garlic..LOL but I'm not sure about that amount of "perfume"..
