Schoolhouse pendant lights over kitchen table?

I love the look of schoolhouse lights. Pottery Barn currently has a light called Chase Pendant which is a 24" track with 2 36" hanging schoolhouse lights.

Our ceilings are 8ft. How would this light look over a kitchen table? Is it meant for an island instead?

Our table is 60" rectangle with an oak top and black distressed legs. Chairs are similar to the PB Schoolhouse chair.

I don't think it is only meant for an island. In fact, in one of PB's photos of the track lighting it is over a table. I also considered putting them over my table, but I needed a different fixture. I guess as long as it goes with the rest of the style of your kitchen, it would look fine!

Thanks gillylily! Not sure what the style of my kitchen at the moment, but I know what I like when I see it!

Isn't there a rule about the lights being 36" off the table? Or is it from the ceiling? I can never remember rules when it comes to meausrements!

This is the double that you speak of. They show it with a counter top height table and higher chairs - very casual. It could look nice in certain settings. It all depends on the space, and it's furnishing. Photos of your space would help discern if it would enhance the kitchen or look out of place.

David, If I had places to connect four or more orthagonal lines, I would do that. But the trees aren't well-situated for that, and I'm not sure about installing fee-standing poles. They might be a little too intrusive, visually. (If we went with slimmer metal poles, rather than redwood posts, they might not stand out as much. I may need to investigate how strong metal poles would have to be, and how I could get them fabricated.) The cantilevered umbrella system is a clever idea, but I think that would be too big and intrusive for what we have in mind. We have another outlet at the edge of the patio near the table. I suppose we could go with one of those under-umbrella lighting kits that would attach to the ribs of our existing market umbrella and run the cord from beneath the table to the outlet. We were hoping to have lighting that leaves the dining area open to the sky, but that may not be practical.

Any suggested measurement for a light would be from the surface it's lighting, since ceilings can vary so much. But I also considered the fact that when I move the table to clean or whatever, I don't want to walk into the light, so we put our schoolhouse pendant so that it was 6 ft off the floor, which is about 3 1/2 ft off the surface of the table. The directness of the light and wattage will make a difference in how high you want it, too.
