Cooking with no refrigerator....:-(

Well, my 4 1/2 yr old French Door refrigerator seems to have developed a problem with the compressor - maybe.

It quit cooling last night and they can't get anyone to do a service call until the 22nd!!!!!!!!!!!

The compressor should be under warranty for 5 years, but...

I still can't even get anyone locally to look at it, although I will keep trying.

Scott is out of town this week, but how in the world are Will and I going to survive a week and a half with no refrigerator? I'm having a hard time imagining this.

A broken fridge is still like a big cooler. You can buy block ice in the grocery store (or dry ice, harder to find)and keep it in the fridge. Keep the milk close to the ice and replace every 2 days or so.

Or buy a small one at Target, then sell it to a college student. :)

Like Denise said...you really now have an old fashioned ice box without the nice drain system.
And call the store where you bought it and scream and holler! And take Will to the store when it will be most crowded and say in a loud voice "I want to talk to someone about my 4 year old refrigerator that you won't fix"...in a loud voice...so anyone else standing around hears.
A week and a half?? Not acceptable!!
What brand....so the rest of us will know.

Day three with the new Electrolux SxS and range. The SxS temp is spot on, I have a thremometer in the the freezer and the fridge and both are holding temps as indicated on the door read out. The sliding shelves are very nice, there is lots of room in this 26 CF unit. The freezer has good storage as well, even a place to put a frozen pizza on the right upper side of the freezer. Over all the frigerator is very nice, love the gallon door pockets for milk and orange juice. The range is just a very nice product, the glide out racks are so nice, much better then standard wire racks, the temp in the oven is also right on the money and checked with an oven thermometer. The top burners heat up real fast, the display flashes on the wave tough panel with the letters HE to remind you that the burner is still hot and dose not take to long to kool down at all, in fact about three times faster cool down then the Amana range this Electrolux replaced. The oven cooks very even, we cooked a roast the fist night with it and it came out perfect. We have never had a convection oven before and I must say that I am very impressed. Over all I would recommend Electrolux to others. I will update as we use these more.

My family is Italian on both sides and I have to say I've never in my life had this soup or had it served at a wedding!! We DO make chicken soup with little meatballs in it, but it's just regular ole chicken soup - with little meatballs in it! Never used the spinach. If we put a "green" in soup, it's escarole. Anyway - not knocking the soup - it sounds wonderful, but with my Italian background I just find it funny that no one in my family or any other Italians that I know of, actually make or eat Italian "wedding" soup lol!! The lemon zest in the meatballs sounds intriguing, however. That's not something I'd ever think of doing. I can't imagine what it tastes like? And that's a great idea to cook the meatballs separately - last time I made it I tried to cheat and instead of cooking the meatballs first, then adding them, I cooked them right in the soup. I have to say, the fat from the meatballs gave the soup a "meaty" taste that I didn't find pleasant. I'll have to remember to cook them first, then boil them a bit separately before I add them to the soup - great tip!! Lisa

These are the things we love: cooking, being with friends, being with our dog. Things we don't like: the current kitchen. The current kitchen has: -limited counterspace -- we now have a kitchen cart that lives in the living room taking up space there. Regular use items are on top of fridge because of lack of counterspace. -microwave on the bottom shelf of cart so older family member can't use it and it is back-breaking to use/clean for everyone else, too (no counter space for it, no room for a second cart). -oven that is too close to the floor (the door actually lies on the floor when open) and opens directly into the main kitchen entrance. -Kitchen table with 2.5 foot clearance to counter -- we sit in this space and it is also a walkway (including use by person with walker). -People frequently have to exit kitchen to allow access to fridge doors or for other people to pass through. -26+ cu.ft fridge is packed to gills (plus we have a fridge and two freezers in the garage (a full height and a chest). -coffee grinder won't fit under current low cabinets so takes up a great deal of the prep space beside the sink. -When we grind grain, roast green coffee beans, dehydrate kale, or do the sausage making, folks are banished from the kitchen table interrupting meals. -We have a lot of fruit trees (orange, lemon, lime, pomegranite, apple ...). During each season, more implements compete for limited space. The pomegranite press juicer eats up more sink prep space, the apple mead sits out in the very limited stove area for months. Exasperated with friends? No -- their presence makes dealing with the kitchen oddities more than tolerable. The cramped space has never stopped the parade of fun cooking stuff like buying whole pigs and parting out to friends or making our own bacon and sausage (though it has sometimes been quite the circus: juggling the meat grinder, sausage stuffer, keeping lots of ice handy to keep everything icycold, shuffling people as trays of sausage are sent out to the garage fridges/freezers after being stuffed, etc). We love visiting the farms where we buy our food, learning how to kill and prep live chickens and I even once camped out at a Tenn farm for a week learning various fermentation methods (including making soy sauce). It's a pretty major part of our lives. Now, I was having trouble explaining to the master chef/homeowner front entry into kitchen was a bad idea. "It just isn't done" wasn't cutting it, and "it'll hurt resale" elicited a response of "well, can we get an estimate from a realtor as to how much it would devalue the house? Maybe it's worth it anyway". And there are financial and family connection reasons that the house will probably be his for the rest of his life. But I let him read your responses so he knows it's not just my opinion. :-) Cooking is a really big deal for us and is way fun. It will go on, no matter the size and layout of the kitchen. That said, the side south window may be on the chopping block and center hallway options are back.

Kitchen work zones, what are they? "Zones" are areas in your kitchen where the work occurs. Work in the kitchen is broken down into three primary work zones. Everyone has these three zones, everyone! Prep Zone...This is the zone where food prep takes place. Food prep can be anything from making a sandwich to preparing a multi-course meal. It includes cleaning/rinsing food, cutting, mixing, processing, etc. For many people, especially those with small kitchens, their Prep Zone is also their Baking Center for rolling out dough, etc. 70% of the work and time spent in the kitchen is spent prepping. It's the most often used and longest used zone in your kitchen! Cooking Zone...This is the zone where you take the food you've already prepped and apply heat...cooktop, oven, MW. Only 10% of the work and time spent in the kitchen is spent actually cooking. This is the least used Zone, relatively speaking. Think about it, you usually don't spend the entire time standing in front of your oven or cooktop watching it cook. Sure, there are some things that do have to be stirred constantly, but most things do not. And even then, you usually still spend more time prepping before you begin cooking. Cleanup Zone...This is the zone where the dirty dishes are handled! Dishes, pots, pans, etc. 20% of the work and time spent in the kitchen is spent cleaning up. ++++++++++++++ OK, now we know what the primary zones are. So, how do we design a kitchen keeping them in mind? Prep Zone...works best when it contains a water source and is next to or across an aisle no more than 48" wide or so from the Cooking Zone. Trash & recycle bins should also be in the Prep Zone. Cooking Zone...works best when next to/across from the Prep Zone (see Prep Zone). It's also nice to have a water source nearby as well as trash & recycling nearby. Cleanup Zone...works best when separated from the Prep & Cooking Zones. This can be on the opposite side of a one-sink kitchen from the Prep Zone or it could be in a completely separate location (the latter usually only works well if you have two sinks). Obviously, it also needs a water source and the DW. What else do we need to keep in mind regarding planning a kitchen and zones? Dish Storage...works best when it's near the DW and near the serving/eating locations (island, DR, Nook, etc.) Food Storage...works best when it's near the "action". It's nice to be able to store staples, etc. at their point-of-use, so food storage can be spread throughout the kitchen. E.g., flour, sugar, etc. in a "Baking Center", spices in the Prep or Cooking Zone, Cereal close to where breakfast is eaten, etc. If you have a dedicated pantry, it's nice to have the pantry near the point where the groceries enter the house as well. Refrigerator...works best on the periphery of the kitchen so it's easily accessed by people working in the kitchen as well as "outsiders" looking for a snack without the "outsiders" getting underfoot of those working in the kitchen. It should also be near the Prep & Cooking Zones inside the kitchen and, if possible, near the main meal location(s) for ease of access during mealtime. Microwave (MW)...this also works best on the periphery of the kitchen so it's easily accessed by people working in the kitchen as well as "outsiders" looking for a snack without the "outsiders" getting underfoot of those working in the kitchen. Zone-crossing - avoid!...When planning zones, etc., try to minimize zone-crossing. For example, if you can avoid it, don't put the refrigerator such that you have to cross through the Cleanup Zone to go b/w the refrigerator and the Prep or Cooking Zone. Protection...of all the zones, the Cooking Zone should be the most protected from through-traffic as well as general-kitchen traffic. The Cooking Zone contains the range/cooktop where you will be dealing with fire (if gas), hot foods, etc. You also do not want to have to cross a busy aisle when taking a pot of boiling water from the range/cooktop to the sink for emptying...or anything else hot, for that matter! Zones and Kitchen Workflow When designing your kitchen, ideally, the zones should follow the normal/usual workflow in a kitchen: Refrigerator => (Prep) Sink => Workspace => Cooktop/Range => Table OR (Cleanup) Sink => (Cleanup) Sink => Cabinets (dishes, pots/pans, etc.) Which translates to: Refrigerator => Prep Zone => Cooking Zone => Serving Zone => Cleanup Zone You don't necessarily have to have this exact flow, but something close. For example, you might have the Cooking Zone located between the Refrigerator and Prep Zone. This isn't necessarily bad b/c these two zones are tied so closely together. On the other hand (OTOH), it's not a good idea to put the Cleanup Zone between the Refrigerator and Prep or Cooking Zones on the same run or on the same aisle if it's a narrow aisle. In this case, the DW and someone cleaning up and/or unloading the DW will be in the way of anyone prepping or cooking because the refrigerator is an integral part of both prepping and cooking. And, of course, the reverse is true....someone prepping and/or cooking will get in the way of someone cleaning up! +++++++++++ Common Zones, Appliances In That Zone, and Suggestions For What To Store There: Storage--pantry & refrigerator--Tupperware, food, wraps & plastic bags Prep(aration)--sink & trash/recyclables--utensils, measuring cups/spoons, mixing bowls, colander, jello molds, cutting boards, knives, cook books, paper towels Cooking--cooktop/range & MW (and near a water source)--utensils, pot holders, trivets, pots & pans, serving dishes (platters, bowls, etc.), paper towels Baking--ovens/range--utensils, pot holders, trivets, pots & pans, casserole dishes, roasting rack, cooling racks, cookie sheets, foils, rolling pin, cookie cutters, pizza stone, muffin tins, paper towels [often combined with Cooking Zone] Cleanup--sink & DW & not too far from trash--detergents, linens, dishes & glasses, flatware Eating/Serving--island/peninsula/table/nook/DR--table linens, placemats, napkins, dishes & glasses, flatware Utility--broom, dustpan, swifter, mop, cleaning supplies, cloths, flashlights, batteries, extension cords Message/Communication/Command Center--keys, phones/answering machine, charging station, directories/phone books, calendar, desk supplies, dry erase board or chalkboard, pens/pencils, sticky notepaper Less Common Zones: Tea/Coffee Bar--tea/coffeemaker (and near a water source)--mugs, teas/coffees, sugar, teapot Snack/Beverage Center--near MW & refrigerator or small refrigerator--snacks, snack dishes, glasses [often combined with Tea/Coffee Bar] Pet Zone--feeding area--food, snacks, leashes, medicines (if no small children in the home), etc. Overlapping of Zones Due to space constraints, some zones often overlap. If this is the case in your kitchen, be sure there is enough work space in the overlap for both activities. Zones that commonly overlap... Prep & Cooking Zones--These zones should be adjacent to each other, so this is a common overlap and is generally not a problem. Just be sure you have enough room for prepping as well as landing space for the range/cooktop. (It is strongly advised you have enough room for emergency landing space on both sides of a range/cooktop.) Prep & Cleanup Zones--If there is only one sink in the kitchen, these zones will be adjacent to each other because of the need for a water source for both zones. However, true overlapping is not generally a good idea. Instead, try to keep the cleanup area separate from the prep area by putting the sink between them. E.g., DW on one side, Prep Zone on the other side. (You should strive to keep the DW out of the Prep Zone as well as out of the path between the sink and Prep & Cooking Zones and between the refrigerator and Prep & Cooking Zones.) The Sears store where we got it closed, and they are now a part of Kmart, where on most days you could go in and scream about anything and there isn't anyone else in the store...

Hey - that is the same model I have from 3 1/2 years ago ...

The ice maker died this summer.

They offered me an extended warranty when I called for service . $239 for 1 year, it covered all the parts and labor for replacing the icemaker. You might consider that and get them to replace the icemaker too.

Bummer Stacy! Only advice I can give you is to pretend you and Will are in Europe and eat and shop the way they do, make it an adventure. Each day pretend you are in a different country and go to the market to buy the things you need for the days meals. Baguettes, tomatoes, pasta, small amounts of cheese. France, Germany, Italy, Spain ......just trying to think of how this can be made an adventure. The other way would be to pitch a tent and pretend you are camping!

Another option is to make a challenge out of what you can make from staples on hand...beans, tuna, pasta. It's a way to use up the stockpiles.

Breakfast will be the big challenge but I'm sure you can keep some eggs, milk , yogurt etc cold in a small cooler.

Sorry pal, no matter how you cut it, it's a PIA!

PS: What the heck did you do with all the stuff in the fridge!!!

Stacy I feel your pain. My compressor also went in my (at the time) 3 yr old fridge. It's also a Sears Kenmore. They sure don't make em the way they used to.

When I called for service, I also had to wait something like 2 weeks just for an appt to see what was wrong with it.

When I was told how long it was going to be I panicked and called another local appliance repairman and he told me that it was definitely my compressor and that since it was under that 5 yr warranty, I'd be better off waiting for Sears to come out. So I waited the two weeks for them to get here. Then they had to order the compressor, another 2 weeks. When the compressor arrived at my house, in the mail, I had to call Sears and make yet another appt for the repairman to come out and install the compressor. All in all it took 6 weeks, If I recall correctly. I jsut asked hubs and he also said 6 weeks from start to finish.

The part that upset me the most was that after the local repairman told me it was the compressor, I called Sears and asked them to make sure they had a compressor on the truck when the repairman came here so he could install it right then and there. But sadly, he didnt have one on the truck and it had to be ordered. That really miffed me.

Don't ever EVER buy a Sears appliance....they don't make anything they sell and most of it's carp ( but not all!) and since it was made by whirlpool or RCA or Hobart or whoever....they don't stand behind their stuff.
10 days is totally unacceptable!!!!
I believe I would be walking in front of that store with a sign saying they won't repair what they sell!

oh Shaun, that's exactly what I'm afraid of. did you have a rental or loaner for that 6 weeks??? Do you remember how it was acting that you knew it was the compressor? Mine makes a loud buzzing noise about every 3 minutes...the compressor is hot after it's on awhile, and nothing is cooling.

Sharon, good idea, but if it drags on 6 weeks, I will be soooo over living like a European...lol.

yeah, Linda, I'm considering that.

yes, we got the fridge when they first came out with them, and they have a pretty poor reviews. Wish I had known then.

This is actually the first mechanical type problem we've had with it, but to be honest, after we got it, I was never that thrilled with the french door design. But don't tell Scott. :-)

I'm waiting til he lands in Houston, to find out which #'s he had already called before he left, so that I can pick up from there...

i just had my fridge break this summer too, only 18 months old... mine was a faulty circuit board. is your freezer cold, is it iced up? thats what happened to mine, fridge hot, freezer iced up. its the pits without a fridge, i had just done a costco shopping spree for $500 and LOST IT ALL, plus more... it was 105 that week, no way to keep food cold, i live in the country, driving in and out for ice wasn't going to happen... plus who has that many coolers or floor space to spread them around. just be super cautious with your food, if its hot in the fridge, your food is not be safe in these summer temps.
did you go online to sears to set up an appointment? they could see me in 48 hours, which i thought was too long... i called every single place on sunday, its tough on the weekend, but found many could get out in 2 days, tops. keep calling everyone in the phone book!
if sears comes, they first appraise the damage, then send out the repairman later, just start now with appliance stores and see what you can find tomorrow, warranty of not, huge slubs of time are so inconvenient!
if per chance you have a frozen freezer with condensation, just unplug you fridge, let the freezer defrost and then plug back in. it will work for a limited time, until it freezes over again in a few days, as you seek the repairman for the parts. my husband watched the repairman, then he bot the part in town for 1/4 of what the repairman wanted and just snapped in the new mother board... good luck, i know how horrid it is not to have a fridge, you never realize how dependent you are on them until they are gone!

It's like the "begats" in Genesis. Whirlpool owns Maytag. Maytag owns Amana. Amana makes French-Door refrigerators for Amana, Kenmore, Viking, Jennair, Kitchenaid, Dacor, Maytag. (Of course, that was yesterday. Today someone else may own them.) They're all the same barring slight design differences and a different badge on the front.

You might want to visit the appliance forum. Lots of information over there about Sears appliance repair. That way you'll be well-armed when a repairman does appear.

Remembering back on the repairs this summer....

It was VERY inconvenient. The refrigerator took a series of 3 visits from various repairmen with a week plus in between each visit. The dishwasher only took 2 visits, but with a long time in between to get the parts. Then you have to be there from 8-12 or 1-5 (not 9-3 like I suggested I could be available) , then you get the call that they are running way ahead of schedule or behind.

Only a tiny, little suggestion... after it sets unpluged overnight, try plugging it in...it might reset itself. We had a cooler at the store that would be fine for months after doing that.

In 2004 I was without electricity for 2 weeks in 95 degree weather due to a hurricane. I feel for you. My Kitchenaid refrigerator is 7 years old. I'm wishing it dies. Loud (in an open floorplan) but never a problem. On the otherhand, the 4 year old Kitchenaid washer is on its extended warranty until 2009. Its had four transmissions and is getting ready for another one. Trash stuff! We won't replace the washer until its off warranty. Don't know what we will use as a replacement.

Oh Stacy, that just stinks! Granola bars and Pop Tarts for everyone! I think most pasta dishes would be fine. You just can't have any leftovers or it you have a separate freezer, you could put leftovers in there.

We have an extra fridge in our basement that I could never live without. We've had it for 3 years, and it was just a cheapo from Home Depot that works great. We entertain a lot, and it frees up my kitchen fridge. I hate crowded fridges! If you have room for an extra fridge, maybe you could buy a used one from the classified ads in the newspaper.

Stacy, mine was making a buzzing noise like an electric razor and then a click. Then one day I noticed water on the floor and saw that everything was thawing out in the freezer.

I have another fridge in the garage and another freezer chest so we were okay.

But you don't! What are you gonna do??

Oh, boy would I be screaming at them, from store manage on down. Two weeks in summer heat without a fridge is not acceptable. Just not!

Can you beg or borrow an electric cooler? Looks like a regular cooler but you can plug them in to house currentor your car adapter for trips. They also can heat if "switched". They are great for long road trips or more space if company is comming.

That is horrible customer service!! Very typical today of many large companies. Do you have neighbors, friends or relatives that might have freezer space so you could store some of your frozen foods in their freezers? I would buy a small mini fridge to keep the basics cold and use coolers with block/bag ice and replenish as necessary for produce, veggies, etc..I hope that you will be able to get the problem resolved this week! The electric cooler sounds like it might solve some immediate problems...

thanks for all the sympathy. I am sorry for all of you who have gone through something similar!

Shaun, that is the EXACT noise that mine was making. I heard it Fri afternoon, and by evening, I knew things weren't cooling. I do have a small chest freezer in the laundry room, so I cleared some things out of it, and threw a bunch of stuff away, and saved what I could. When plugged in Sat AM, it worked fine all day til 6 PM, then the noise started again...so now I have had to ditch all the ketchup mustard condiments, etc...in addition to milk and eggs.

My friend up the street remembered she had a small fridge and she and I brought it up this morning. It seems to be working and I should be able to keep milk and eggs in it. wWonder if I have any ice cube trays in the cupboard?

Just a reminder........
Many things in our fridges don't REALLY need to be there.
Ketchup and mustard are a couple.
You don't need to throw them away. They'll be fine for weeks on the counter. Same for vinegars, BBQ sauce, etc. Check the labels. If it doesn't say to refrigerate after opening, it's probably going to be fine!
No point in making this any more expensive than necessary.
I'm sorry you're going through this. It sounds like the summer I had last year!

Stacy where do you live? Even in our small town we have places that have 24 hour emergency service. I'd call them and if your frig is under warrenty bill them. We have a second frig in our garage. It's mostly for beer and soda in the summer and holiday over flow in the winter months. And also if we are hit by hurricanes or other bad weather and lose power, we plug it in to our generator and it has saved us many times!
I have a Maytag french door, freezer on the bottom and the compressor went, the week before Christmas,it was only 10 months old! They came out the same day at 8 or 9 at night. I wouldn't stop bugging them until you are satisfied! Good Luck!

I could not go 2 hours without a fridge. Where do you live? We've always had good response from Sears but it seems that has really changed since everything is thrown together in China. I would quickly buy a small apartment or office size fridge and keep it in the garage (or where you have the room) or sell it afterwards but sounds like you may just need a backup system. I can do a good job of complaining to the top brass but sounds like these large companies are too busy counting their profits to consider their customer needs. What good are warranty plans if they can't come out for weeks?

Sorry to be reading this tonight Stacy. Glad to hear that your friend had a small one to lend you. I agree that most of your condiments should be fine without the fridge. When I was waiting tables many years ago we never kept the basics in the fridge....ketchup, mustards, and steak sauces.

I live in the country and the few times I've needed service on an appliance I've never waited that long. My fridge is a Sears and still going strong after 19 years... I'm not sure I'd never buy from Sears again. Heck, who knows who makes anything anymore these days....even Maytag is not what it use to be after their downfall. Another sad story IMHO!! DM still says here best appliances were GM I think that was the original Fridgidaire line..we are talking early sixties with that one. LOL

Just spoke with a Sears rep again, and that is exactly what they are doing. They can't even order a part until the person comeson the 22nd.

The "good" news is that if the estimated cost is more than $500 (which it will be with a faulty compressor) then I may choose to accept a $500 credit towards a NEW refrigerator and avoid the longer wait of ordering the compressor. WHAT?!?!?!?!

Oh my....not good at all! I'll never buy a Sears appliance again.....

May be worth telling them (the big guys not the CS agents) that you belong to a gourmet cooking, appliance and kitchen forum ( ok a bit of a stretch) and that their service policy is getting a lot of attention and not the kind they would like. Maybe even cop[y them on this thread....or start a new one that we can really lay into them on LOL

As I said my experience is the big guys want everything nicey nicey and they sure dont want to deal directly with customers.

Stacy, I'd be raising he** like you wouldn't believe if I were you. That is the worst service I've heard of and I live in the sticks! Sheesh. Of course, Sears is also the place that wouldn't repair or replace my digital camera after 30 days, even after I told them it was a gift and I hadn't even RECEIVED it before the 30 days was up.

It seems that big corporations don't really care whether their customers are happy and new appliances are not meant to last more than 4 or 5 years. Planned obsolescense, I suppose.

Still, I'd be throwing a fit that you wouldn't believe, everywhere from your local Sears to their headquarters, to the Better Business Bureau and the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division!

Carbon copy every darned one of them too. In the meantime, I'm glad you've found a small refrigerator. Now is the time of year to live on fresh produce anyway, I suppose. Sigh. I'm sorry...

By the way, I belong to a heavily trafficked gourmet cooking, appliance and kitchen internet forum where your customer service policy regarding this issue is capable of gathering a lot of attention. I believe that people should be aware if this is your standard practice.

I am also prepared to contact the New York State Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division and the Better Business Bureau.

Again, and as usual - thanks for your words of wisdom. Even if I get nowhere, at least I feel better...:-)

OH and to those who asked, I'm in a very small town 1 1/2 hrs south of Buffalo, NY. I love the small town - ness of it, but hate it at times like this...

Stacy, tell them I said hello! They may remember me. roflmao!!!! I did kick and scream and it got me no where. Sears doesnt care. Bottom Line. They're too big fer their britches.
