Nah I don't want to take the time and effort on them. I do love to see them get a double dose when my good friend Karma comes along. She's far more brutal can I could ever be. ;-)

Mariannese's comment is EXACTLY what the concept of my post (well, actually the WashPost blogger's post) is meant to imply. Not a book for someone who has never read a book, by his or her own choice. But a book that has moved you to some great extent -- whether by teaching you a lesson of compassion or love or understanding, or encouraging you to follow a dream, or simply by transporting you to a different world that you would probably never have the opportunity to experience. The kind of book that you know you always want on your bookshelf to reread over and over again -- one that you must own. And for a child, the ownership factor can mean a great deal, esp if that child comes from a poor (financially speaking) family. (The first book, for a child, that I thought of was Dr. Seuess's "Sneetches.")

Helen, my husband is over here coveting your kitchen. He's a big fan of Prairie, Deco, and Art Nouveau. I'm not sure how things are nationally, although I do know that locally white oak has suddenly gotten impossible to lay hands on, costs the Earth, and comes with lead times in excess of two months. You can have it, but you're going to both pay and wait for it. Just something to ask about when you order, because sometimes lead times can really mess up a reno. It might NOT be a problem with cabs, but yet turn out to BE a problem for flooring, or vice versa. Speaking of, does anybody know if Kohler is back up and running after their factory fire? I seem to recall the Whitehaven sink having a 9 month lead time for a while.

When my husband died, I had limited experience with the death of a loved one, so I didn't know what to expect, neither did I really know what was expected of me when others died. But I learned a LOT living through that time. When people die, others just show up. We didn't have a lot of relatives, but did have many, many friends. They just came. They brought food. Because so many people came and went, people were helping with memorial celebration items, my husband's family arrived from out of state (thankfully, housed by a next door neighbor), people just coming over to give me some love, etc. I was so grateful for the food that people brought because there were provisions to offer visitors or even have a meal myself that I hadn't had to cook or shop for. The outpouring was wonderful. I didn't know that before; I might have waited to be asked to come thinking that was the polite thing to do. One of the best things someone brought was a huge basket filled with non-perishables, like crackers and dried fruit and canned gourmet type foods - olives, pickles, smoked salmon, cookies, etc. I can't tell you how many times I was able to put together a little snack offering for someone visiting. Often it was because I was hungry, too. Since I wasn't really familiar with how nice that was, it hadn't been my way of behaving toward others previously, but now it is. I show up. I do what I can. I bring food, run errands. Give $ if it's needed. I learned a lot about what can help. The $ people sent me was almost always from his co-workers all around the state, few of them known to me. I did find it odd, but I knew it was given in love and caring for him and their admiration of him.

I have Meiwa, which I received as a free promo item a couple of years ago from our local insurance agent and will eat them though honestly there are a lot of citrus varieties that would be on my list ahead of it. To date I have only ever eaten them whole, sort of like eating a seeded grape, though a bit tougher, I have seen some interesting looking recipes that I want to try. Mine came from Saxon Becnel, I have bought a few other citrus trees from them, and this one by far has the poorest graft union, it was about 3 ft tall, in a 3 gallon growers pot and a bit thin, though I have to wonder if the insurance company made a deal with them to get seconds in a bulk buy (as I recall it was a choice between Owari Satsuma, Meyers Lemon or Meiwa kumquat, or some non citrus tree, since I had Owari and Meyers growing in ground already I opted for the Meiwa). Don't get me wrong, I do like them, it is just eating 1 or 2 at a time a couple of times per week and a pound of them would be about my yearly limit. By contrast something like a Cara Cara Orange might weigh a pound each, and I could eat one per day during prime season. This does not count the juicing potential of other citrus. Even Meyers lemon is higher on the list, as the perpetual year round supply of lemons is nice to have, even though 90% of them off my 5 year old Meyers tree go to waste.

I'm assuming you're referring to people who have done someone wrong.

I dont mind seeing them get a taste of their own medicine ... but try to refrain from being the person to dish it out to ensure that other people dont form an opinion that *I* need to be taught a lesson/manners, etc.

I generally leave that to the universe--most people do eventually reap what they so.

However, I will say I do enjoy it when someone gets what they have coming to them. Just as an example--a bridal shop screwed over a good friend of mind who happened to be blind. How low is that? Well, when I heard the shop had their electric lights turned off for non-payment, a few months later, I have to admit, hearing about the payback kind of tickled me.

But it's not worth lowering yourself to their level--means you have to watch your back so that Karma doesn't start nipping at your heals, too.

Once in a while I dish it out, but like Wildchild, I'm a believer in Karma too. Think OJ. I like social pressure also.

I wouldn't call it giving someone a taste of their own medicine, but they may suddenly find that I drop them like a rock or suddenly pull back if I have to maintain some sort of civility.

I like to think Karma does a better job of that than I would, also. In general, know-it-alls, jerks and offenders don't recognize their negative behavior anyway . . . so they probably wouldn't "get it" if you did give them a return spoonful.

I hate tail gaters. One morning a guy was tailgaiting me. I let him pass then followed him and tailgated him for about a mile. I started to think, what if he hits the brakes? I'll be killed, probably not him. I stopped and never did that again.

Sometimes tempted.

But usually fairly successful at resisting.

In a congregation a number of years ago, a family had a daughter who was intellectually disadvantaged, another that died after a battle with cancer when her daughter was about 4, they had trouble with farming, though he was a good farmer, a close relative was killed in a vehicle-train accident ... (plus some other difficulties that I've forgotten) and their barn burned down.

People used to shake their heads and say that they had suffered far more than alomost everyone and that one might say that any family deserved.

I find it hard to believe, though frequently it may happen, that those that do nasty things usually or necessarily get their just deserts in the end.

I think (hope?) I've learned to treat others in a better way then perhaps they sometimes treat me/others. As a smart pastor once preached in a sermon, who is the potter? The point was to not let other people be my "potter" and craft my behavior, rather let God craft my behavior. So I try not to mirror others' bad behavior.

OJ, I think I'm missing your point. I don't quite understand. I don't think that those people in your former congregation had bad situations because of nasty things they'd done previously. But I'm not sure if you think so or not.

I think that nasty or impolite people are likely more unhappy than those who are the opposite. I know that when I have bad days and behave negatively, I'm unhappy both with the circumstances and with myself.

I won't bother to make sure someone gets a dose of their own medicine, but I can't resist pointing it out to them if it happens!
As Pixistix said, the jerks don't recognize their own behavior. However, if it is pointed out to them that they deserve what they have gotten, perhaps there is hope for them after all.

i came close just today...dil is forever "ditching" us, and ds ends up coming to family functions alone...she's having an avon party soon, and and while i'm not doing anything that night, i almost sent regrets...frankly i'm going for him not her.

Only with my kids growing up. I always felt it was a good learning lesson. Especially if they said something hurtful, or skipped their chores.
Daughter did not clean the kitty litter, but instead covered it with more litter. She slept with that box in her room for a week..whew!
Rooms were not cleaned, door knobs came off...
Stuff like that.
They are the cleanest kids ever now. Go figure.

I don't believe in karma, but there's a great bible verse, and it's come in handy for me many times. "Vengeance is Mine" Romans 12:19.

I don't give them a taste from myself and I don't know if I ever really believed in Karma...BUT...the lady at work that tried to get me and another girl fired and was really,really nasty to us for awhile....well,guess who's getting either laid off or fired tomorrow??? Yep! Her!I "sorta" feel bad for her because she just bought a new truck and is in the process of moving.BUT,she brought it on herself by being nasty and not doing her job...Karma is my friend!

i do believe in karma, i also believe you can make your own karma. i have believed that since i was a teenager and it has served me well. that said i do not dole out medicine but i do enjoy hearing of the consequences that happen to people via their own downfalls, like stupidity :-)

trinitytx, i have to say i have the utmost respect for your way of parenting! i truely believe people learn from lessons and consequences of actions. well most do and those who don't provide amusement lol ~ liz

Very few have wronged me in any tangible way, and all who have also had karma bite them in the b###. I try not to retaliate (and usually succeed, though I may fume for quite a while), because that creates my own bad karma, which may come to pass at any unexpected time.
