My rays of sunshine (pic)

It's -13 right now . . . not a great pic, but these blooms sure keep me going when I look at them in front of my snow-covered pool. Within a day or two, that tall amaryllis will pop.

OK, I admit it: I've had enough winter :)

I've never seen that sign but it sure sounds awesome. I'm guessing the names hanging down are childrens/grandchildrens' names. What a fantastic idea. Since my first grandchild was born, I have said "You Are My Sunshine." I would love to have one of these. Ohhhh my friends, did I mention that I'm going to be a Babci again come next April. Dorph, I was amazed when I went googling solar ovens just how much of the world depends on this cheap, nearly free cooking resource in the poorest sectors. Parabolic would be good, but a bit more 'dangerous' if not used correctly. There was an excellent site on building a parabolic curve from just the right sized umbrella, rofl, and also one on an Indian site to do with cardboard, broken down exactly in measurements. You'd almost need eye protection to use one or go blind. LOL. Yes, passive solar hot water heat can be fairly easily rigged, but our roofline is very prohibitive, given the heigth of this structure. I can't think of anyone I love I'd want up there and if I paid to rig up a homemade system, the cost would outweigh the benefits. I have twelve and fourteen foot high ceilings, an attic and this is a two story building and the old roof was wood shake and then shingle and pitched steeply. I lived in fear when the roofers replaced it with shingle, and you literally need a bucket truck to clean the gutters. My step son used to bring his over for the job. I do the hot water by hose routine in my g'houses. Get buckets of hot water for things like scrubbing outside. In fact since it's under a heat retaining structure anyway running at over 100 degrees ambient, the water in the hoses on a sunny day are so hot, you can't touch it, and would damage my plants if I didn't drain the hoses first. We have so many areas of energy potential we haven't even begun to tap. I have been reading on wave energy trials done in England. It's endless, its almost constant and always in motion. I think it has high potential for coastal cities and that happens to be where the majority of our population are located.

Bungee - The original house on the lot burned to the ground about 5 years ago. This house/lot was in the previous owners family for nearly 100 years. This area is still considered the "country" even tho we are not far from the city. Lots of people on this hill don't even have city water. Our lot just got it a few years ago. The owner told us he rented out the house for a while before it burned and in exchange for rent they told him they would put in a septic, prior to that who knows what they flushed into. He had no idea where the septic was, he never saw it, and the city had no record of permits for the septic so we thought they probably just dug a hole or just let "it" flow over the hillside which unfortunately is not uncommon for the rural areas around here. When we were having the old concrete foundation removed the guy ran over a bunch of brush/dirt with his gigantic piece of equipiment and felt the lid crack underneath him. Voila, there was the septic tank. We're lucky he didn't fall in it. ewwwww!

I also read that it can get 8-10 feet tall... but I wasn’t sure if that was own root or not. If it can do that own root... I would need to keep that in mind and grow it as a climber if I successfully graft/bud it. Or maybe just grow it own root. So any experience with this one is very helpful! Especially in CA. I noticed in previous threads that Kittymoonbeam and a few others have grown this rose, but not a lot mentioned recently. Any experiences or advice would be helpful. :-) Thank you!

What's the name of the orange amaryllis? I use have lots of indoor plants when I lived in Illinois. Like you, it helped me get through the winter. Since moving to CA I don't have time for house plants, I have too much outside yard work to do year around. (Which I love!)

Very nice display Pixi. All of our plants are being wintered over in the garage except for my palm. I enjoy seeing the blooms this time of year.

The sun is out and we have a whopping 19 degrees here! We won't talk about the 5 inches of snow we had and how it blinds ya going outside! :)

Gayle, the room with the plants is not screened, just has the southern side full of windows and a patio door . . . which leads to that screened-in area on the left side. The screened room runs the full length of the pool and has furniture and my gas grill, and a soft swing that's perfect for sipping margaritas . . . when it's a LOT warmer :)

Clare, the orange flower is a lily, and doesn't have a big bulb like the amaryllis - but it's weird! It grows new little tiny bulbs off the main bulb, which I just break off and stick in dirt and they grow into these beautiful flowers! I've given away hundreds of them . . . can hardly keep up with them.

The sun's out here now too, Connie . . . my computer's in this 'flower room' and it's downright hot! I've got a shipment of canna bulbs coming next month . . . hope it warms up soon so I don't have to keep them all in here until June!
