can't eat because of broken tooth; what to make for dinner?

I broke a tooth this morning, and I'm not going to the dentist until Friday (unless the pain gets worse or I have other problems). I was going to tell my family they could feed themselves tonight and tomorrow, but now I'm thinking maybe it's an opportunity to be creative. Any suggestions for meals that don't require much chewing that my family would enjoy?

PASTA & SOUP.......my daughter just got braces on, and her teeth are really sore. She finds that Pasta & Soup are the only thing that she can eat right now. Diana55 Oh...and Mashed Potatoes too.

I think it also has to do with how calories are burned. When the days are longer, we try to eat before later taking a walk, which helps to burn some of the calories. I think the later you tend to eat, the less likely you are going to burn those calories. Especially if you then sit in front of the tv or go to bed soon after. I'm sorry, but this is absolutely 100% incorrect. Calories eaten and calories burned is accumulative. You don't burn the calories that you just ate. The calories you eat and the calories you burn from living and exercising happens over days & weeks. There is no scientific data available that says otherwise. Not eating late at night works for many because it is a time/calorie management control but it has absolutely nothing to do with biology.

First we start off with antipasto, and stuffed mushrooms. Then the pasta dish, it will be homemade ravioli, courtesy of my Italian MIL. Then the salad, arugula sald topped with baked stuffed gorgonzola pears. Then the main dish, grilled lamb chops with grilled veggies, and a roast leg of lamb roasted with rosemary potatoes. All served with a lovely homemade red wine. I love my in laws, but I love them more after a few glasses of red :P DH and I are hosting this year to take the burden off my MIL who hosts everything. There will be 11 adults and 6 children, and 1 infant who is still just bottle feeding, no lamb for her! For desert mini coconut cupcakes and traditional grain pie and italian cheesecake. I'm most looking forward to the egg hunt with the kiddies though. I love holidays with our huge Italian family!

Well DH took BooBoo to the vet. Sometimes we see different vets there and he said he really liked the one today so I hope he got his name. Sometimes I think some are more dog vets vs cat vets. maybe just a vibe I get, who knows. He said this one was a cat vet. :) He said his tooth is just chipped and nothing is exposed and it should be fine. He also gave him a shot for his asthma and said we might have to start giving him an inhaler once a day since I can't get him to take the pills. They are just so small I can't get them shoved in his mouth good enough and he spits them out when he thinks I won't notice. Hmmm. I wonder if he said anything about his weight. I have to ask DH about that..... Good to know I am not the only one that broke a tooth as a kid. Not really smart to play tag in socks in wet grass with a big tree as home base. My tooth literally got stuck in the tree and when I pulled away half of it stayed in the tree! OUCH. :) Thanks for your help.....

Lars reminds me of when the announcers in Montreal would “correct” Jim Lefebvre's name. He says the Americanized “Leh-FEE-ver”. It's his name. One assumes that no matter the origin, the man knows how to say his own name. Re Jaques, I'd be glad to try to repeat your family's pronunciation, but I don't get your examples. M. Pepin says his name the way I'm used to hearing it in French. While I've heard Americans and Brits say a variety of things from Jack with a hard J, like Jack Warner, to something more or less like Pepin's but with the “a” voiced longer, I don't get the vowel from Jack vs. the vowel from Jock. M. Pepin uses a reduced vowel, like an "uh”. What I here most here is an "ah” sound, like in “father”. I have heard French speakers saying what is notated as æ, which is the vowel in cat. Other French speakers say it with an ah sound. The issue then is what happens when the speaker gives extra personality to the “uh” sound. That's where accents come in. There are more than half a dozen ways of saying this kind of an “a”, and as Cloudy Christine was saying, how you interpret that depends on what sounds you can differentiate. You can teach these coloration differences to adults—that's what dialect coaches do—but close enough is all most people can manage. I wouldn't get hung up on a vowel.

Shepherd's Pie, Ratatouille, Stuffed Peppers, Hamburger Stew (with noodles and tomato sauce), Tuna Noodle Casserole, Mac and Cheese, spaghetti.

Quiche doesn't require very much chewing and is rather simple to make.

Quiche

5 eggs
2 cups evaporated milk
1/4 teaspoon salt
Dash nutmeg
Pinch sugar
Dash cayenne pepper
12 strips bacon, crisply fried
1 Â½ cups grated sharp cheddar cheese
1 unbaked pie shell

Beat the eggs, milk and seasonings together. Sprinkle crumbled bacon into the pie shell and cover with grated cheese. Pour the milk/egg mixture over all. Bake at 300 degrees for 30-35 minutes or until quiche has puffed and browned. Allow 15 minutes to cool before serving.

Ah, this one is right up my alley! As I posted last month, my DH has broken several teeth recently and won't get implants till October, so I've been cooking soft foods exclusively since early July (I'm not going to cook two separate dinners, so I've been eating soft foods as well). The main difference, aside from the omission of solid meats, is the change in the proportion of protein to carbs: I tend to add a smaller amount of ground meat to a rice or pasta dish than I would serve as hamburgers. But I think that's actually a good thing!

I've made every one of Chase's suggestions; we especially like the Shepherd's Pie. I also made a big lasagna and froze the portions separately. Another suggestion: crab cakes. Actually, almost any fish or crab dish is easy to eat, as long as you omit the crunchy additions and toppings. Canned tuna or chicken, mixed with a little mayo, can accompany a pasta dish; without the dressing, it can be added to a rice pilaf or sauteed vegetables. You might be able to manage meatloaf, too. You'll probably be able to eat most well-cooked veggies, except corn on the cob. Baked potatoes and sweet potatoes are fine, too. Avoid raw veggies, nuts, seeds, and raisins. Dairy foods and eggs are great.

It might be fun to try a few souffle recipes! Your family could put them together with you, then you [all] can practice a quiet reading or board game time while they cook! Teach the old dog[s] some new trix!
