Two tiered peninsula -depth of cabinets?

We are considering a two tiered peninsula with 24 inch cabinets facing the kitchen and 12inch cabinets facing eat in kitchen with overhang for pulling up barstools. The two tier is partly to hide the sink ( and stuff that accompanies it ) and create visual break. Does anyone have any thoughts ( or pictures) on such a design. Our kitchen is not huge but the extra 12" cabinets on the outside just sound fabulous for storage reasons. It would end up being 24" counter with 22-24 inch top tier which I am afraid might look too thick.

I have exactly what you have described except our upper tier is 30" deep. The extra storage is great, but I regret doing the two levels--wish we had done the whole thing one level. To be honest, I had wanted to hide my sink too and it really doesn't do that. I love the large one level islands.

There are lots of photos on Houzz of peninsulas with cabinets on the other side. Why do you want such a large counter on the top tier though? Is that what you mean by "thick"? I think ours was about 15" in the before photo. I agree with twosit though. If you have no other deep work surface in your kitchen, I encourage you to go one level. It will almost act like an island.

We removed our pony wall so that we could have a wider peninsula. 12" cabinets are behind the 24". Also, rethink bar stools with your eat-in kitchen being adjacent to the peninsula. We never used ours for that because the dining chairs and stools would just collide.

Also be aware that today's sinks are much deeper and do a good job of hiding your dishes.

2 considerations here. Where will you put the electrical outlets that are currently located in the backsplash area, and are you comfortable doing the needed electrical changes? You cannot eliminate them. They are code required. You may be able to relocate them onthe side of a cabinet, but there are several 'ifs'' here. Post a pic and get more specific suggestions. Second is how do you plan to support the stone overhang? Stone is much heavier than laminate and cannot extend further out than 9'' from the back of the wall or cabinet. Corbels could work, or angled bracets, or invisible pieces of steel. The how that is a combination of your aesthetics, budget, and DIY skill.

I bought the 12" wide version (they come in different widths depending on the width of your base cabinet opening) and it is sitting on the dining room floor waiting for me to get done with lighting and drywall before I install it. I also bought the 2-tier flat storage racks. I have a 240v outlet in the back of one side of the cabinet that I'm going to have to work around. I also took the time to glue down a 1/4" sheet of oak plywood and seal it with polyurathene (sp?) to re-inforce the bottom and give it a bit more strength and something for the screws to bit into. My cabs are cheap particle board. Several years ago I installed their 2-basket trash organizer and it has worked well so I was confident in the cookware products.

mommyto4boys- We entertain often, love how my new kitchen flows..I used to have one VERY large island.. and it didn't work in my old kitchen.. here most people sit/stand behind the 2nd island, or in the nearby seating area.. which gives me room to cook/clean/set up, without others in my way, but close enough to chat. For buffets, we usually use area in butlers pantry for setup. Kids grown, so didn't need/want large seating area at island. Don't want to hijack op tread- here is a link to my finished kitchen blog. Are you asking for opinions on whether to have a two-tier island or just whether to have shallow cabinets in the back of a two-tier island? Because i'm going to add my opinion that you should do a one-level island rather than two-tier. We had a two-tier island with back-facing cabinets in our previous home (before remodel) (we also had a two-tier peninsula, that I also ditched in favor of one level). I found that the top tier was simply a junk-magnet, so instead of looking at dirty dishes you were looking at piles of other junk. I couldn't wait to get rid of it. I was very happy with the one-level island and peninsula -- much more working room even if you could see some pots and pans. We had a few "back" cabinets even with the one-level -- on the back of the peninsula, backing up to the corner cabinet, we had a 4-drawer stack which opening by the door from the driveway, and we arranged the now-wide island to have a set of drawers facing the sink and dishwasher, another set of drawers facing the cooktop, and a cabinet facing the third side dedicated to a step stool.
