two-tiered island--show me the pics!!

We are working on remodeling our kitchen and will have a two-tiered island (counters at 36''and 15'' deep eating bar at 42'' height.) We are trying to figure out how to finish the wall for the bar to match up with the cabinets. Our cabinets will be oak in KM Autumn Blush finish. Thanks for any pics or sources you could post!

We finished the back of our island to co-ordinate with other pieces in the kitchen

We are not done yet but here you can see how we finished the bar with wood to match the cabinets

Paul, "My initial plan is to build a three shelf unit that is 24" deep, 48" wide, and 6" tall." My two lightstands have almost identical dimensions to yours. I am using two units of the Northern Tool chrome wire shelves. The shelves are 69 inches tall but the 5-inch wheels bring their height above the floor up to about 74 5/8". I moved my bottom shelf down to its lowest position just above the wheels. All of the shelves are adjustable in one-inch increments. The open chrome wire design is handy for a number of reasons. The shelves are waterproof, don't hold water, and they are handy for hanging things from. I just hang my overdriven Home Depot 140-904 shoplights directly from the shelves and adjust their height with the chains. I got some 1-inch S-hooks to attach the chains with. I get four shoplights per shelf and since overdriven fixtures put out 50% more light, that is equivalent to 12 T8 bulbs per shelf. I get the bulbs in boxes of 10 for $19.99 from Home Depot, so that brings the bulb price down to $2 each. Last year my onions got 18 inches tall, so I think the shelves could accommodate your tomatoes just fine. I also hang small electric fans on chains for air circulation on the plants. The artificial wind seems to do them good. If you do decide to go this route, Northern Tool has free shipping on orders over $149 so you could buy something else from their wide selection to bring your order over that amount and the savings would make that extra thing essentially free. @mangodog Keitt as a commercial variety is probably one of the best. older plantations that grew Tommy Atkins, Palmer, Haden in the D.R. are moving to Keitt. because of its decent taste even if picked green, & disease resistance it does well even in wet weather. and long season, I saw the first Keitts in July, and some still being sold in stores in late Nov. when i left. The tree is very productive. a grower told me the only thing he doesn't like about them is their droopy growth. Haden and Palmer are still grown, even organically in the drier regions of the Island. I heard through the grape vine that someone planted a few thousand Alphonso, but I have not confirmed this, I have been trying to find out who. as you mentioned, growing a mango in a desert or semi arid region may change the taste of the mango. Alphonso have a big rep back in India as being the best, but from what I have read from those that have tried Alphonso grown in Fla. is that "its nothing to write home about". @johnb51 I have only tried 1 Kent and it was very good. and I have never seen any negative comments about them. It seems to me that people tend to "get bored" with a particular mango, or their tastes change after a while. or maybe its just a case of "the grass being greener..." if you do a search on "best mango variety" in this forum you will notice that "favorites" have changed over the years. nothing wrong with that, variety is the spice of life I believe. but those "old" good mangoes are still good in my book.

I bought the 12" wide version (they come in different widths depending on the width of your base cabinet opening) and it is sitting on the dining room floor waiting for me to get done with lighting and drywall before I install it. I also bought the 2-tier flat storage racks. I have a 240v outlet in the back of one side of the cabinet that I'm going to have to work around. I also took the time to glue down a 1/4" sheet of oak plywood and seal it with polyurathene (sp?) to re-inforce the bottom and give it a bit more strength and something for the screws to bit into. My cabs are cheap particle board. Several years ago I installed their 2-basket trash organizer and it has worked well so I was confident in the cookware products.

Who has a big island? Show me your pics!

Wow! That island is too big, but I'd love that bathroom! My island will be 9 x 3.5" with taller, shallow cabs on the back part and no seating. It is basically going to function as one wall of a galley type work area. I have a peninsula nearby with counters for when I need to expand my work space, but the peninsula will be for show most of the time (with a glass arch on it once the budget recovers). The kitchen table will be at the other open end of the work space. I guess my future island does not qualify as big by GW standards, lol..... In our last house, I needed to walk around to properly clean the other side of my island top. I am 5'5" and it was a stretch, so it would be easier to just scoot around to the other side. I loved my big island and any inconvenience about wiping it off at the end of the day/meal was no big deal for me. Most of the time, my cooking and prep came nowhere near the other side. My kitchen table was on that side of the island, so if anybody had eaten in my kitchen and made a mess, I was headed that way for one or the other anyway!

marciab, WOW, beautiful. How does your set-up function as it looks amazing. I have one very large island & it is the gathering place now. When we entertain people are sitting, standing, visiting there. I set up buffets there on the non-seating part. Have you entertained in your space, if so...do people gather around both, does it split your pary in half with some around each space? Your "bookcases" are beautiful, though I would need more seating. Do you clean dishes at the other island or perimeter and where is your dishwasher. I would love any of your feedback. THANK YOU!

Ooohh, I love those. We decided against finishing with the panels because of cost but we're thinking about something like marciab10 did with bead board. I looked on the finished kitchens blog last night and we found some ideas. We have a straight bar thought and were having trouble deciding how to make it match. Thanks for all the ideas so far!

We entertain often, love how my new kitchen flows..I used to have one VERY large island.. and it didn't work in my old kitchen.. here most people sit/stand behind the 2nd island, or in the nearby seating area.. which gives me room to cook/clean/set up, without others in my way, but close enough to chat.

For buffets, we usually use area in butlers pantry for setup. Kids grown, so didn't need/want large seating area at island.
