Anyone designed/built a tiered lightstand/Tomato growing shelves?

I want to build a tomato growing stand that I can use in my garage to start 100-150 different tomato, pepper, and cucumber seeds under fluorescent shop lights. I do not want to purchase a growing stand as I think they are too expense for what you get and too nice to just keep in the garage.

My initial plan is to build a three shelf unit that is 24" deep, 48" wide, and 6" tall. I will grow plants on two shelves and use one shelf for storage. My propagation mat (22"x44") will fit a shelf along with four full size seed trays. I was planning on having four fluorescent shop lights per shelf. The uprights will be 2x4Âs, with 5/8" plywood shelves. I think it will be a lot heaver than I would like, but it should be sturdy and hard to knock over.

I was wondering if anyone had already designed something like this and if so, would you be willing to share your plan/design. If not, I will go with what I have drawn up. I like to hear and see otherÂs ideas, plans, and designs and not reinvent the wheel if there is something better.

My two lightstands have almost identical dimensions to yours. I am using two units of the Northern Tool chrome wire shelves. The shelves are 69 inches tall but the 5-inch wheels bring their height above the floor up to about 74 5/8". I moved my bottom shelf down to its lowest position just above the wheels.

All of the shelves are adjustable in one-inch increments. The open chrome wire design is handy for a number of reasons. The shelves are waterproof, don't hold water, and they are handy for hanging things from. I just hang my overdriven Home Depot 140-904 shoplights directly from the shelves and adjust their height with the chains. I got some 1-inch S-hooks to attach the chains with. I get four shoplights per shelf and since overdriven fixtures put out 50% more light, that is equivalent to 12 T8 bulbs per shelf. I get the bulbs in boxes of 10 for $19.99 from Home Depot, so that brings the bulb price down to $2 each.

Last year my onions got 18 inches tall, so I think the shelves could accommodate your tomatoes just fine. I also hang small electric fans on chains for air circulation on the plants. The artificial wind seems to do them good.

If you do decide to go this route, Northern Tool has free shipping on orders over $149 so you could buy something else from their wide selection to bring your order over that amount and the savings would make that extra thing essentially free.

I bought a diy greenhouse kit after much research on the web comparing structures and prices, as I had a certain budget but I wanted something that would add to the beauty and value of my home. Some friends put it together for me, set it up attaching it to my home in one weekend. It looks gorgeous! I opted for a redwood frame and tempered glass mainly for the looks. I am not an expert on greenhouses and this is my first real greenhouse, but I can say that the fact that it is a lean to helps with heating costs in the winter as one side is attached to my home. My home electric bill last winter was lower and unless the temperatures went really low I did not need to turn on the heater in the greenhouse to keep my plants warm. I bought the kit at mcgreenhouses.com, after spending weeks dissecting the web. They were very helpful and gave us all the information we needed to set up the structure properly, as none of us were experts. I am really happy with it, I can grow my veggies year round and I can sit in it soaking up the winter sun reading a good book as it spacious enough!

Hello Sharon, About 15 years ago we lived in Dallas (actually Plano). My East Coast wife tells people, "We did time in Texas." We owned one of those 10,000 sf houses built on a 10,000 sf lot, with a 50,000 gallon pool, everything fenced in, had to water the foundation of our house in the summertime so that it wouldn't crack and no place to have a garden. Daily weather forecast, high temp today in the triple digits, strong damaging winds, possible hail, lightning & thunder late afternoon storms. Not one single mature tree in the entire subdivision. Streets laid out and mapped all the way from Dallas to the Oklahoma state line. I'm originally from Nebraska, so wide open spaces didn't bother me, but DW was happy to move to Virginia. About hay smell. The smell of hay depends on what type of hay it is. If it is newly cut alfalfa, then yes it will have a strong smell for quite some time, but the smell normally subsides as the hay cures. Many people like the smell of newly cut hay. You may not. Most grass hay does not smell very much at all. I cut and bale fescue with clover and various rye grasses mixed in. It has little or no smell. Spoiled hay most likely won't smell much when it is first ruined. As it decomposes it will often develop internal mold that is not harmful to people or plants. Hay mulch will sometimes develop a good mold where the mulch touches the earth. Don't fret about that mold, its good for the decomposition and the worms and good bugs love it. I think that's why I haven't had any serious bug problems with this garden. My observation is that all the bug action takes place in the lower parts of the mulch and the plants are so healthy that the bugs don't harm them. Very few bad bugs this year. The lady bugs are plentiful here and kill lots of aphids. I was surprised that there were no potato beetles on my cukes this year. After the hay mulch has been in place for a while, it will begin to develop a nice "earthy" smell that is associated with high quality compost and good dirt. My suggestion is to use plain grass hay and not use alfalfa. Some folks use straw (wheat or oat) but my view is that straw does not have the same nutrient content as hay because there is little or no green material in straw. Thus, the nutrient value to the soil isn't there. Just my $.02 worth. Some folks are afraid to use hay mulch because they think there will be too many weed seeds and they will end up with a garden full of weeds. My experience has been that while there may be weed seeds in the hay mulch, by the time it has decomposed and as thick as it is the seeds just don't germinate. Also, I intensively plant and there is little space for weeds and little sunlight for them. If a weed does pop up it is easily pulled. If a bunch of weeds try and grow, I just toss some more hay on top of them and that stops them because they get no sunlight. I've also been known to stomp on weeds now and then. Horse manure. Now that does smell when it is "fresh" or "green." You don't want to use that. Instead, buy composted horse manure which shouldn't have much or any horsey manure smell at all. If you have the space, hubby could have another "dirty" job and make your own composted horse manure. Personally, I'd probably just buy a pickup load of composted horse manure and be done with it. If you don't like the idea of working with horse manure, you might hire someone to work a load into the soil around your roses. Yeah, my teas kinda got out of hand, but I don't smoke, drink, gamble or chase women, so I had to have some kind of a vice. Yes, it was addictive, but DW always had fresh roses in the house and the house smelled great. Let me know what you learn about Ruth Stout and what you think of her ideas. She was one of a kind. Day 22 Update! Peppers and lettuce: The same peppers and lettuce from the previous shot. They're in the second-worst part of the UFO grow chamber -- far from the UFO in the center. Nonetheless, the peppers are doing beautifully. I've got a whole tray of them looking just like that. The lettuce, only so-so. They're putting out leaves at a good rate, but two of them never did stand up like I was hoping they would. Next up, the monsters: Okay, these pumpkins are getting a bit scary: The larger of the two now has three tendrils on it, and leaves the size of my outstretched hand. I don't know how much longer I'm going to be able to keep them in here before they decide to crush everything else in their path, but I'll keep them in as long as I can ;) I realized that last time I forgot to photograph my eggplants. They're doing just shiny: So, now for my crazy okra: If you'll recall, one germinated tall like a freak, but with a strong stem, and dark green leaves; one germinated short with dark green leaves; and two germinated short with pale, chlorotic yellow leaves. I credit this to using old seed. I'm pleased to report that all of them are doing great. The tall one is now working on its second true leaf, while the two chlorotic ones are starting to turn green. All three of the small ones have just started on their first true leaf; I expect they'll look like the tall one (minus the crazy height) next week. My Ronde de Nice squash that just germinated? I transplanted one, and surprisingly, the transplant is doing better than the non-transplant! Now for the one that was my biggest concern last time: my watermelon. If you'll recall, its first true leaves had turned crisp and stopped growing. Well, I'm glad to report that it has not one, but two sets of normal, healthy true leaves now! Here's a shot of some of my miscellaneous squash and melons. Not a complaint from me about a one of them; they're all growing very healthy. My cinnamon basil was looking healthy enough that I felt it time to thin it out into individual pots. The remaining plants in the original pot are below: So, what's my primary concern this time? I'm starting to suspect that I'm getting more growth in the UFO chamber (red, grow) than in the Christmas chamber (blue, veg). I'm not sure yet, though. Now, that is to be expected to some degree, since that chamber is higher wattage (~105W vs. ~85W), it may be more than that. It's really hard to tell, though, because I moved my most mature trays to the red chamber and kept the youngest trays in the veg chamber. However, I do have one good comparison point: basil. I have a basil pot in the veg chamber that's exactly the same as the basil pot in the grow chamber -- same soil, same size, same plants, and same planting time. So, next week I'm going to photograph and measure the two and see how they compare. But overall, another good week :) The plants pretty much take care of themselves (since the LEDs are pretty cool, the soil takes a long time to get dry, so I rarely even have to water). Hence, I've been busying myself readying my outdoors for the new plants, for once it gets warm enough. I'm going to be training my vining plants to strings suspended from guyed poles this year, via vine clips; should be neat to see how they do.

Now for my fourth year I am growing hosta seedlings in my basement. I started the first seeds the middle of November and have now 3x3 inch plants. I grow them under 24 hrs fluorescent lights on two shelves in the basement. I use 4ft common fluorescent lights like you can buy at big box stores, suspend them on chains 1 inch above domes of seed trays or plant leaves. I have the seedtrays and lights enclosed with 2 walls and old towels. The heat from fluorescent lights is enough to raise the temperature under plastic domes to close to 80 dgrs, in the area without domes to 71 dgrs in a 60 dgrs basement. This is enough for hostas, so I no longer use heat mats. I also use cardboard with aluminum foil taped on it standing around the hanging lights and plant trays to reflect any light back to the plants. So I have created grow chambers which I only open once a day to check, if I need to replenish water in the trays. Water contains half-strength Miraclegrow tomato fertilizer. A former neighbor was an engineering liason to a lighting manufacturer. He said that the benefits of special growing lights are minimal, so he himself used only basic fluorescent lights in growing seedlings. Here in upstate NY temperatures will be warm enough at the beginning of May to bring my seedlings outside. I will place them in shade and bring them into the garage should temperatures dip below 50 dgrs.

Hey, MM, thanks for the link. I just got off the phone with NT and they're kinda clueless.

I had searched their site for shelving. Picked a item number. (Turns out it was priced by the shelf, by the wire rack, etc.)

I asked about this item, and finally they came back with "that's not a shelf unit, that's a wire rack for a shelf unit".

So, I said "The picture shows an entire shelf rack. Is this the wrong picture then?"

Which is of course the answer. The picture didn't say, "this wire rack fits this shelf unit".

They didn't pick up the ball and point me to the link you provided even though I told them what I was looking for.

Maybe they should be paying you commissions !

At any rate, it looks like a good product.

I built the stand that nygardener has the link to. I modified it a bit and made it 24 inches deep so I could use 2-double shop lights and four trays on each shelf.
I love this stand. It has served me quite well for several years.

I guess I'm just lazier than most because I 'put together' a seed starting unit that has worked very well for a number of years. It is a Heavy duty angle-iron type shelf unit with particle board shelving. I put eye hooks in the underneath of one shelf to hang the shoplight chain from, giving light to the shelf below. It currently only has two shelves going because that is all I need right now but when I need the other shelf I can hang the lights in about 2 minutes. Cost of the Heavy Duty 4 shelf unit was about $40 on sale....6 shop lights at $5 each....a power strip to plug everything into and a timer that's starts and stops the lights automatically. Total cost was under $150 and that includes a heating mat. I also have velcro tabs on the shelves so I can hang plastic sheeting to make a green house effect. Since I have been using the APS self watering systems, I don't find the sheeting necessary. If I could figure a way to put a picture on here, I could show you but haven't figured that out.

I built a shelf unit from Northern Tool with MM's help and I'm very pleased with it.. I was looking to purchase a shelf unit/cart from Harris Seed Co.. The self unit/cart I built saved me more than 1/2 the price and I gained 100% more light output than the Harris stand.
I personally would trust what MM's telling you. He didn't let me down through-out the whole buying of the cart and lights and setting up process. He was there to answer any question i had with-in hours . For that i eternally thankful. However, i may have let him down by not posting the pictures of my new shelf, and for that i apologize.
MM i will get to it I promise.. I have a lot on my plate I'll be in touch, and thanks for your help.
In my opinion, you couldn't find a better mentor to help build your stand.
