I like elderberry (American) flowers and berry juice for bronchitis, as well as horehound, which grows fairly well for me (it is quite bitter). I have been able to collect elderberry flowers from bushes I planted, but the birds usually eat the berries-- I purchase Sambucol syrup instead. The English elderberry tree is more poisonous, and there are several types of American ones as well which are more so, so elderberry needs to be used with caution after reading up on it a bit. I like to substitute Dandelion root for coffee, and occasionally drink Pau D'Arco tea when I start to feel paranoid about cancer. My theory is that it may not cure a full-blown cancer, but might be discouraging to a few cancerous cells floating around. I purchase both of those. During the summer I just make teas out of whatever I can find growing well in my garden. Japanese honeysuckle blossoms are supposed to have some antibacterial properties, and taste nice with various mints. Sometimes I make a tea with ground ivy (not really an ivy; a weedy little ivy-like thing with purple flowers that I think is cute) or violet leaves. Supposedly forsythia buds have some antibiotic value; the Chinese grow a special strain of forsythia that is supposed to be more effective. I haven't tried any yet to see what they taste like. I also like to mix pineapple mint and pineapple sage in a tea, as is suggested in one of my books on herbs. That has a very nice fragrance. I found an hebal salve in the local health food store with comfrey gel in it that seems to help my arthritis, so I also like that.

Aside from the medicinal remedies, you've also got the myths and legends and superstitions - not to mention culinary recipes and spells and cosmetic uses etc. Try hunting around the WWW for 'herb(al) remedies', 'folklore herbs', 'herb myths and legends' 'herb history' or 'herb supersititions' 'herbalism' or 'herbology' or any other variation on the theme, and be prepared to spend the rest of your life utterly enthralled (and doing nothing else)! Try looking at some of the Wicca or Witchcraft sites - they often have some brilliant information about all sorts of ways of using herbs, and some old stories and traditions which are fascinating to read. The ones I've encountered have a very healthy respect for herbs and give some excellent advice (though of course there are some over-the-top sites, too!). This herb is very important for use during menopause, due to its positive effects on uterine disorders, headaches, and depression. Vitex MEDICINAL: Vitex is a normalizing herb for the reproductive system. It is most commonly used in treating infertility, PMS, menopausal problems, and hormonal imbalances. To discover if a Witch is in your midst, legend has it that you should drop a walnut still in its shell into the lap of the person suspected, and if that person is truly a Witch, they will be unable to rise from a sitting position as long as the walnut is in their laps. Willow MEDICINAL: Willow works like aspirin. In fact, aspirin was derived from willow bark. It is also used to cleanse and heal eyes that are infected or inflamed. Witch Hazel MEDICINAL: Witch Hazel is used externally for insect bites, burns, bleeding wounds, hemorrhoids, and varicose veins. It is often used as a mouthwash for conditions of the mouth and throat, and for bleeding gums. MAGICKAL: The forked twigs of the Witch Hazel are used for divining. It will help heal a broken heart and cool passions when carried. Wormwood MAGICKAL: Wormwood is burned to raise your spirits to a higher level, enabling easier divination and clairvoyance. many herbal treatments have not been researched and therefore "validated" by modern medicine, but that doesnt mean they dont work. whether it is prescription or herbal medicine that gives you the results you need, I dont think it really matters. There is much that doctors do not know about substances, or even proven medical therapies, so if something works for you, then I don't think it needs to necessarily be proven, that may come in time, but we're not idiots, we know what works for each of us, and it may not have the science (yet) to back it up, and we may not know why something is working, but we know when we see the results. I am seeing a specialist at the moment who told me a story the other day. she said she went to an international conference on something (I can't remember what), and there was a particular side effect of a medication that was listed by the speaker as "unrelated" to the medication. It wasnt until another doctor put up their hand to say they had the same side effect of the drug that things got going, by the time the lecture finished, there were 25 "experts" who also reported the same "unrelated" side effect. what she was saying to me, is that it's not until a bunch of doctors concur that they start to question something, and that she basically has an open mind to these things because of that. I told her of a particular positive effect I was having, and she said she had heard of that symptom before from other patients, but I was the first person to tell her it got better because of such and such treatment. She is an expert in her field, and it was very reassuring that she keeps such an open mind. many of us I'm sure could tell of doctors telling us "that's not posssible", or "that is not listed as as side effect etc". my point is, we should never forget that science is only a small way along the process of understanding the human body and how it responds to many things, so while doctors like to make us feel silly at times, trust your own judgement as well, your own experiences may not been proven yet, but it may also be a matter of time before science accepts what many people already report, whether it be prescription or herbal medications. Just because something hasn't been proven, does not make it untrue.

In the broadest sense that no drugs is always preferable to drugs when one is discussing drugs that are not necessary to life and limb only, yes. Nowhere in either of your posts in this thread have you even mentioned the grave risks associated with these drugs. You have not mentioned weighing risks vs expected/desired benefits. Instead you suggest that there are (serious and negative) implications that follow from "declining ovarian hormone production." The intact female produces all the estrogen and testosteone required for the non-reproductive body. Progesterone, as the hormone of pregnancy, is not produced because it is no longer required unless one takes exogenous estrogen in which case it is used to counter the extreme carcinogenicity of estrogen. I have my feet sufficiently grounded in reality to know that most women are being pressured to take hormones of some kind after menopause despite the lack of evidence for benefit. They are not warned of the dangers and those who get their drugs from "compounding pharmacies" may well never even see the federally mandated warning that is supposed to be included in all estrogen drug prescriptions. Many women see the word "natural" and assume therefore safe. Compounding pharmacists/pharmacies encourage this belief because it contributes to their bottom line. In this last post you pay lip service to the notion that "absolute minimum" dose is best, but carefully avoid saying that for most women that minimum is none at all. The difference between our approaches is that I make my biases clear upfront. You disguise yours in apparently neutral but actually highly biased language - launguage that is eerily similar to that used by drug companies/compounding pharmacies/mlm scammers and the like to sell their product(s). I wonder if you would post in equally (apparently) neutral fashion, if someone came here asking about the use of street drugs or tobacco.
