NO WAY!! Our Farmer's Market is not so cute.
It's in a parking lot across from the fire department. No caboose, no breads, no mess of anythin'.

Crowder peas are a shelled pea/bean eaten when fresh, not dried. I don't like them really, to much like a black eyed pea.

Most of the vendors are very friendly and supportive of each other. Last week we had more people selling. It varies from week to week.

Last week I had a customer who very rudely squeezed two of my loaves of bread! First time that ever happened! I was on the look-out for her today, but thankfully she didn't show up. I guess she was testing the loaf for freshness and she did buy one loaf - but really!?! We have to watch out for tiny children who are running amok with no supervision. Benny said one last week was poking holes in his wife Vonda's pies.

That was fun, looking at your pics. I went to our farm market this morning. I got half a dozen eggs for $2. seven peaches for $5.50 and (hold your breath) two ears of corn for $1.90. That's right -- 95 cents an ear. I only bought them to support the market.

I thought of you while I was there and wished I'd had my camera with me. I have to stay away from the baked goods table because that is my favorite of all and I would buy one of each. Your table is beautiful.

Dedtired, my farmer's market is much, much more reasonable than yours! Small eggplants were .75 ea. Winter squash, .75 ea. Peaches, $1.69/lb.--I bought 8 of them and it was less than $4. Eggs, $3/doz. No vendors with baked goods and that's fine--I bake myself. No watermelon(!?), and no mangoes. What's happening with this world????

I went to the farmer's market closest to me on Thursday. It's fun, wondering what goodies I'll find. This week I just got beets and green beans. Maybe I'll take my camera along one of these weeks.
There is one booth that sells those hand crocheted tulle scrubbers. She has 3 different sizes and even some with handles. I tried some last year and was glad she came back again this year. I really like them.

Tomatoes and corn are just getting ripe here. Cherries are almost done but raspberries and blueberries are going strong and plums and apricots are starting.
I bought apricots today at a local fruit farm that I'll be canning tomorrow.

Like Nancy I love farmer's markets. I left early this morning so I could visit our farmer's market before going to work.

theresa, sorry about the bread squeezers, rusty is right, that kind of behavior seems more and more prevalent. I do like the rainbow eggs and I'm afraid finn would have to compete with me for the cinnamon rolls.

Pam, those prices are amazing. Here the first sweet corn is just ready and the most expensive place around here sells it for 35 cents an ear. Most places charge between $2 and $3 a dozen. I just bought those humongous eggs for $1.75 a dozen and a box containing 15 peaches (small and early, but sweet and good) was $4.

I also love the farm markets, right now mine has blueberries, corn, beans, beets, carrots, new potatoes, sweet onions and the first tomatoes. Oh, and zucchini, eggplant and cucucmbers.

Cherries and strawberries are done, blueberries are in full swing along with raspberries and peaches will be ready any time. The first early apples are just about ripe too.

I would put up a folded piece of paper right in front of my loaves with 'NO SQUEEZING' in big, bold, red letters. Maybe I'd add 'please'. How rude.

Just to clarify: the depot is not used for train passengers but as a covered area for vendors or music groups. Trains come through Gibsonville but do not stop. There is an official train station in Burlington.

There are two town festivals, spring and fall, when vendors up and down the town main street pay a fee to sell and music groups perform all day. We don't have the regular market on those Saturdays. During the summer there are gospel groups and other musicians that play at the bandstand.

Last night PresbyOpia played under the big tree from 6-8 PM and I went to listen. This was a very casual, sing-a-long and bring-your-own-chair kind of performance. There were 2 guitars, 2 mountain dulcimers, and my friend Bill on his hammered dulcimer - all sang. They played folk tunes, hymns, novelty tunes, and standards. We all sang along on Comin' Round the Mountain, Amazing Grace, All God's Critters Got a Place in the Choir, and other favorites. We only had to stop when the trains came thru! LOL!

Pam the prices at our farmers market are similar to yours. I paid $3.00 for a broccoli and $3.00 for a cauliflower. $6.75 for six very small heirloom tomatoes. I couldn't resist the tomatoes. They were the first tomatoes of the season. $3.00 for a bag of very tiny new potoates, $3.00 for a bag of small purple potatoes (8 in the bag) and $3.50 for a one pound bag of green beans.

What fun it is to read about yours and everyone else's markets. I have to enjoy them vicariously, because I work Saturdays, when all the local farmers markets are open. The Dallas farmer's market's open every day, I think, but it's not the same. It's mostly commercial, imported veggies, with one small area that has local produce, but even they are from huge farms. There's nothing wrong with huge farms, I guess, but for some reason, the Dallas market is just not much fun.

Anyway, I loved looking at your pictures. Your breads look wonderful. I can't imagine anyone squeezing your fresh baked bread. It must be a habit of hers, from shopping at the grocery store. To give her the benefit of the doubt, maybe she didn't even realize she was doing it.

You are probably right about the "squeeze lady" not realizing she was doing it it. I think some people do this from habit, just like many of us open up the egg carton and check it for cracked eggs.

Oh man! These prices for vegetables in your areas are killing me. I should have bought the 5 lbs. of new potatoes for $2 that was available yesterday!

When tallying up my sales, I forgot about the 2 doz. dinner rolls that were a special order and the other dozen that Vonda bought. Also, I sold 5 cinnamon rolls to a co-worker at the office on Friday. So not a bad day. I may be going to the mountains to see about my dulcimer next Saturday.

The pictures were great. I'm so jealous. We have a neat farmer's market but the produce is so expensive!

All the produce, etc at Saturday's market is from local organic farms. You should see the price of poultry! Yowza.

If I go to other stands, not at this weekly market, I can get produce much more reasonably. If I drive over the bridge into New Jersey, I can buy an avalanche of produce for very low prices -- peaches, blueberries, corn, tomatoes, bean, local cantaloupe (which I don't like)and more. They don't call New Jersey the Garden State for nothing. I do have to pay $5 to get over the bridge. I can make that up by filling the gas tank in NJ where it's cheaper and illegal to pump your own -- now there's a law I can live with.

Also, Lancaster County has great produce.

I find that the farmers' market prices are about the same as the more expensive grocery stores here. But I know it is fresh, organic, and locally grown.
