New appliances terrifying me!

They were just installed today and I have no idea what to do with them. It took me 20 minutes to figure out how to set the clock on the microwave. Which also made that flashing icon go away - thank goodness, since I had no idea what it meant! The fridge just made its first ice cube - what a racket! I'm afraid to even touch the dishwasher... (never had one before, have no idea how to use it).

The fridge seems much deeper than my old one, which I'm pretty sure it isn't, but I got so used to looking at the kitchen without a fridge in place that I forgot how much space it was going to take up.

Also - it's on wheels. Which was great when I was wheeling it around my living room looking for the best temporary place for it, but it isn't so good now that I'm trying to open the fridge door and the thing keeps rolling out at me. How do I lock the wheels - anyone know??? It's a Frigidaire top freezer model, FWIW.

The plumber also didn't install the toe kick on the dishwasher (18" Miele). I hope he did the rest of it correctly. It's a black plastic toe kick - I assume it should just snap into place, or is there something else I need to do???

Relax, enjoy them. The manual for my new range is 45 pages or so. I've only looked at just enough so that I can do basic operations. Some day soon I'll explore the rest.

The toe kick should just snap into place.

if you don't know how to operate something call the manufacturer and ask to speak to the technical assistance department. they will walk you thru in baby steps how to use the item.
all your appliances have an 800 number.

miele has a great technical assstance department.

Right now your kitchen seems like the twilight zone. once you learn how to operate the appliances hopefully the feeling will go away.

BlueBirdPeony - There isn't one poster on this or any other forum who was born with the knowledge of how to garden without making mistakes. What Ken didn't say is there's an old adage that says something like you aren't really a gardener until you've killed every plant at least three times. Take a step back and accept that you're going to make mistakes along the way... we all have and do. I started gardening long ago at around age 5 and had great teachers in my parents & grandparents who were farmers. That just means I learned a lot early on--it doesn't guarantee no mistakes. It only means I avoided a few. 1) When? I've heard fall. A: For spring bloomers, it's best to divide in fall. For summer/fall bloomers it's best to divide in spring. Do your homework before you divide anything & keep in mind the plant needs time to recover. Dividing in the heat of the summer causes stress on the plants. Think about it... do YOU want to be running a marathon when the sun's broiling overhead and it's 95 degrees and humid? How do I know where to dig? How far out around the base of the plant? A. Get a book on perennials from the library and read what it says about dividing them. I have several that have pictures & drawings illustrating the best techniques. Won't I damage roots of other close plants? A: The chances of damaging the roots of other close plants is less if you use a spading fork as opposed to a shovel or spade. Chances are the roots of other close plants will survive whatever damage you inflict. Do I replant the tubers immediately in the fall? Or keep in the basement til spring? A: Perennials belong in the ground, not in the cellar. It's recommended that the new planting hole is already dug, watered & waiting before you start dividing. How do I know how many or what size to put back in the original spot? A: Depends on your goal--do you want the plant to grow back to its previous size quickly or are you willing to give it a season or two to recover? Does anyone want to come help me?!?!? Miele 4225 Classic is an excellent basic dishwasher; got mine for $899. Craftsmanship superb, wash quality superb, customer service superb (at least for me), great capacity for thin plate dish ware (Corelle). But...could have local code install issues as most countertop siphon breaks have a 5/8 inlet and 7/8 outlet; Miele dishwasher drain line is 7/8 outlet so I use the "high loop" method to prevent back flow and bypass the countertop siphon break. Also, it is not hard-wired, requires a plug outlet, ideally on its own circuit. I installed my own, except hiring in an electrician for 30 minutes to help wire in the extra outlet. It is easily the best kitchen appliance I own. As for parts availability, I could not get my GE dishwasher pump housing or shaft seal after 14 years. I wouldn't count on any service parts after 10-12 years from any manufacturers; they must figure most folks toss units rather than fix after 10 years. The days of parts for 15 to 20 years is over. Majors are now like TVs, VCRs, DVDs, microwaves, and home electronics, toss when they break because repairs are cost prohibitive if not a DIY job.

No front loaders on the 2nd floor? I suppose that depends on the construction. But Bosch fls are made for apartments. I had a pair in my 12th floor apartment in a closet. So much for that myth. The choice between a top-loader (Speed Queen is highly favored here if you're going that way) and front loader can be a multifaceted issue. In general, FLs take longer to wash, use less water and have a high spin rate so water is removed and clothes spend less time in the dryer. Some of the brands can produce very hot water -- mine goes to 165F -- as well. Size varies between Euro models (which I had) or jumbos like our DD has stacked, also in an apartment, which handles laundry for a family of 5. Top loaders work by agitation vs tumbling, use higher water levels and generally take less time to wash per load. They aren't able to extract as much water so there's more dryer time. No right or wrong, just what you prefer. I switched from top to front loader about 10 years ago. Love the options plus they fit under a countertop. We are a family of two. My sister has a Whirlpool fl pair in her apartment (2nd floor) and is very happy with them. Counter depth fridges are tricky. There are those that fit flush, those that have doors that stick out, and those that sort of stick out. Most brands have freestanding and built ins plus the various configurations. Some have 1 compressor and others have 2 -- 1 for the fridge and 1 for the freezer. I don't know how KA stacks up against the others pricewise. But I love, love, loved the Liebherr 30" bottom freezer model we had. It was a freestanding but it fit flush, even against a wall as the door had 0 clearance. I was able to have it look built in though it wasn't. Silent and excellent though do be sure the freezer drawers will suit. I didn't think so but ended up loving them since they could be taken out and put back in -- no bending over. Others here like the brand in general. Sub Zero is more or less the gold standard. Many like the Thermador Freedom columns very much. A friend of mine who's a recipe chef for cookbooks has an LG French door and loves hers.

When I read your post, I just had to respond. Although this has nothing to do with pregnancy, I distinctly remember that, prior to getting my period, I would often have these overwhelming feelings of imminent doom. They were horrible. Since you are at a point where your hormones are trying to get back to a normal level, this could have a great bearing. When I first brought my new baby home (many years ago) I also recall mentioning to my doctor my concern about SIDS. His response was that babies (or anyone) instinctively respond to avoid this situation. Just think about what you would do if you awoke to find yourself face down in your pillow. You'd move your head, turn over, or do whatever it takes to get out of this situation. I kept our baby in a bassinet next to my bed for the first few months. As I was always a very sound sleeper, my greatest fear was that I would not wake up. However, I soon discovered that new mothers suddenly acquire "mother's ear" and wake up instantly at the slightest stir of their little one. The fact that you acknowledge your fears is a good step toward overcoming them. However, it would still be wise to mention this to your physician, for it sounds like your hormones are wreaking havoc with you. I wish you well and hope you are feeling better soon.

Called Frigidaire today to find out how to make the fridge stop rolling. Apparently the plumber didn't level it properly - it should stop rolling once it's leveled.

Also, he doesn't seem to have attached the dishwasher properly on the sides since it tipped forward when I started loading it with dishes.

I'm so sick of these guys.

OTOH, I just ate soup I heated up on my new stove. I've been craving soup all winter - it was very nice, but I now have a warm tummy and I'm sleepy and I still have to cut up more shelf liner so I can put my clean dishes away. :-)

Are gas ranges supposed to make a popping sound when you cook on them? The manual said it's normal...but my (very very) old stove didn't.

We had our appliances installed last week. SO many issues but it is working out.

Plumber essentially didn't realize we are putting panel in front of the dishwasher and screwed the dishwasher in so that the front was even with our inset cabinets. Yeh, it should have been installed 3/4 inch back. Well, two unecessary screw holes later, I will take care of it myself.

Counter top guys made the opening for our 36 inch electrolux induction cooktop just big enough to fit it but nto really pursuant to the instructions. I am sure this type of thing happens but I have been really involved and did a lot of work myself so I have noticed all of this stuff.

Besides all of that, we love the appliances are agree it will take time to get used to it, especially the induction cooktop. We love our double convection Electrolux pro oven.

Ooh, you sound like you're handy, Brown! Wish I was.

All these new appliances - it's like too many new toys all at once. Every time the fridge drops an ice cube into the tray, I jump. Still figuring out how the dishwasher works...and how to load dishes into it optimally. The stove still scares me (and I think I accidentally removed one of those "don't remove me" tags that I thought the plumber had mistakenly left behind), and I haven't tried the microwave yet. Maybe tomorrow night.

I think I'm finally starting to like the undercabinet lighting. I'm used to having very little light in the kitchen, so all this bright light is weird to me.

It's all a toy. If I could trade in my fridge for a counterdepth model (and if I could trade in my carpenter for a competent one), I'd be a totally happy camper.

Not so unhappy at the moment though. :-)
