Honest Opinions on Ikea Cabinets?
Comments (61)I got my estimate from Scherrs, now I'll sit down and figure the costs for Ikea. The Scherr's invoice has a price listed for the drawer fronts and doors, so I hope I can get a pretty accurate idea of what the total would be in that case. Sadly, using the tandombox from scherrs adds a LOT to the price. They suggest dovetail drawers with blum tandem glides. I know this is very backwards, but I just hate wood drawers! Hate 'em, hate 'em. Hate the wasted space, [realitve] lack of internal fittings, but really it's just an emotional response based on months of anticipating the tandembox. In this era, wood drawers seem about as wise as straw roofs. But not sure I want to pay an extra 30% for metal boxes, either-- 30% of the total, mind you, not 30% of the drawer cost. I also hate the email I got from Ikea: I asked them to fix the website so that 4 drawer stacks can be ordered [or at least priced] with different fronts-- someone simply forgot to put the 'fronts' menu on that item page. The email was your typical mealy mouthed, one size fits all 'Thanks for writing to us! We must assume you are stupid, and don't have 'cookies' enabled on your computer. Once you figure that out, everything will be fine.' [Not verbatim, but very much the gist of the thing.] Irritating, but not *quite* enough to keep me from ordering from them if the numbers end up working out. For those of you that have Ikea cabs, what kind of lead time did they need? I don't need them yesterday, but one of the 'cons' of Scherrs is the 3 month wait....See MoreCabinets: Interior Quality vs Price Point
Comments (28)Ok, I had some free time today and went by HD and Lowes to look at Kraftmaid installed kitchens and the other MasterBrand lines. Since they're everywhere, I'll compare to them. I would guess they have some of the same issues since some joints looked similar to my cabinets after I had cleaned them up. I would say that my cabinets showed it more and had more instances of it. But, once cleaned up, I don't really notice it until I look for it. The shelves cleaned up decently well. I don't think I'll notice them now that they're cleaned up, but the Kraftmaid and co. lines had much cleaner shelf ends. As for the cuts in the base bottom that I showed, I've only tried half of the rep's trick, so I can't say how that worked out. I have maybe 4 instances of it across all the cabinets. I really don't care for it, but hopefully it will clean up such that it's barely noticeable. Again, it's all a tradeoff: price, wood family, door style, finish quality, durability, interior quality. I feel that in the end I traded off a bit on interior quality as compared to Kraftmaid such that I could to better on many of the others. I do wish it had been a little better, but I would not have wanted to spend any more than I did (budget) or traded off on finish and durability. See the pantry pics at the end of this. My cabinets are Wellborn Forest. The doors are the Madison door style made of cherry. Finish is ginger with smoke highlights. LWO, you had earlier suggested a simple raised door using a warmer finish than my floors. I hope I got it right. In any event, I LOVE the look! Thank you all for looking this over. I know all of you had very different opinions of this than I. I suppose that's my engineer's mentality coming through. I don't believe in perfection and everything is a series of tradeoffs. I aimed here for the tradeoff that best suited my goals. Before: From Shared After (the angle is a bit different as is visible in the grain pattern, but this is the same joint as above): From Shared Before: From Shared After (it doesn't jump out anymore, whereas before it did): From Shared Pantry: From Shared From Shared From Shared Justin...See MoreCabinets - So much conflicting information!
Comments (11)I just did my kitchen and I went through the exact same thing. Hours of online research, going from store to store, asking questions. Getting ready to start the renovation was more time consuming than the actual renovation! However, I came out of it semi-unscathed, and learned a LOT. First of all, I would NOT recommend particleboard. IKEA cabinets are mostly particleboard and while I do love IKEA (swedish meatballs aside) the reason their products are relatively inexpensive is because most of their wood products are thin and particleboard, which is fine for a bookshelf or something but personally I didn't feel like it was necessarily fine for cabinets that are supposed to be durable and last a long time, especially with the minimal price difference between their cabinets and wood cabinets I ended up finding. Secondly, Kraftmaid is a domestic company and every quote I got from a domestic company was $10k+! Some quotes were a mind boggling $30k+! I'd rather buy a car with that money, so I knew that I couldn't go domestic on a reasonable budget. That left import cabinets and I know everyone is very skeptical about Chinese cabinets and products so I knew the bulk of my research would be on Chinese cabinets. What I basically found out was there are a TON of companies that import Chinese cabinets so the hard part was trying to pick out the differences between each one. I ended up finding the KCMA (Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association) that certifies cabinets in durability, and they have a list of manufacturers that pass their certification. This narrowed down the list of imported cabinets down a lot. So then one of my friends mentioned formaldehyde which really freaked me out. So I narrowed down to each of the manufacturers that were on the KCMA list and researched different companies that sold those cabinets. I ended up buying them online and spending about $6k on the cabinets. They were solid wood, dovetail drawers, soft closing drawers, and CARB certified. DO NOT buy a Chinese cabinet unless it's CARB certified! CARB certified means that its been tested for formaldehyde by the California EPA. There was only two import cabinet companies that were CARB certified that I found (cabinetstogo.com and kitchencabinetkings.com, I ended up going to kitchencabinetkings.com because I liked their offerings better and they had a ton of video testimonials on their Facebook page, plus their customer service people were nicer) Basically everyone's going to tell you different things but don't let it scare you into something you don't necessarily want. Sorry for the ramble but now I'm just so full of all this knowledge I don't want it to end up being useless!...See MoreReplacement cabinets are UP!!!
Comments (48)Hey gang! Wow, I was so surprised to see this thread pop up again... I was planning on an update once some more work got done. Thanks for everyone's kind comments! Avignon, the bathroom isn't finished yet as it's waiting for the kitchen to be finished as well. I will definitely post pictures once it's done. Right now I'm in paint chip hell - I think I've assembled nearly a full Benjamin Moore color deck from the individual cards! (Doesn't help that I'm picking colors for the bathroom, the kitchen, *and* the living room!) You've made some nice tile choices! I really loved Akoya Bone - very realistic looking. I think Lynn chose that tile too. And the Crossville - ah... that stuff is gorgeous. Speaking of kitchen countertops, mine is going to be Zodiaq Smokey Topaz - it's a brown quartz with flecks of white and almost a burgundy-brown. I've got pictures of it on this thread. Very gemstone-like - I love it and can't wait to see it installed - which is happening THURSDAY!!! :-) And *then* the rest of my reno should get finished fairly quickly - electrical & lighting, sink & faucet, install the appliances, do the backsplash. And finally, paint (assuming I don't drown in paint chips). Hi cat_mom! The kitties have cabin fever - I've had them locked in the bedroom for (OMG!) two months because I haven't felt it was safe in the rest of the apartment what with all the exposed electrical and all. They can't wait to come out and jump on their new countertops (whether or not I give them that stern NO!). (I feel SO GUILTY confining them for that long!!! I keep telling myself they're 10 years old and sleep all day anyway, but... sigh.) Budgeteer, I did get the replacement cabinets! And they're UP!!! (See first message in thread. :-)) Hcfl, thank you for your comments! The stiles (vertical) and rails (horizontal) are 3" wide on the cabinet doors and large drawers. The small drawers (6" high) have 3" stiles and 2" rails so that there's room for the 2" recessed panel in the middle....See Morecabinfo
