What are you going to do for your spouse?

We decided to not get candy and flowers for each other but may try and spend some alone time together. I was thnking of buying some pretty stationary, scent it and then hand write a love letter or peom to him.

How about you? What are you going to do?

I wrote him a letter and stuck it in the mail... I just put a heart instead of a return address (you know, so he can wonder for a moment LOL!) Last year was a big, funny fiasco for us, so we will probably just spend the evening together AT HOME. DH and I had been dating for four years, but had never been together for Valentine's Day (he worked out of state a lot). So last year we planned on spending a nice romantic night together, going out to a nice place for dinner. Well, neither of us ever even thought about making reservations for dinner on Valentine's Day (duh!) So we drove around for like three hours trying to find any place that didn't have a line out the door... no luck. At this point I was STARVING and did not want to go all the way home and cook. We drove by a Hooter's and I said "I bet they're not full, and I want a burger NOW!" LOL, the place was empty, and I devoured the burger. I told DH he better appreciate a wife who will take him to Hooter's on V Day. LOL!

Thanks, Mausie, good idea. (Not the Hooters part! LOL) Think I'll mail DH a semi-naughty little letter to work!

I have a funny story to tell about those little heart candies. When I was still married and the ex was working in a coal mine, I made his lunches for him. I put a few of those candy hearts in the bag with the sandwich, thinking it would be cute. ROTFLAMO (still when I think about this)....he came home that night with the partly eaten sandwich asking me what the H@ll this was...showing me the sandwich with a green tinted glob of something. It looked suspiciously like rat poison apparently.

See! You could have used one of those as a stamp before you cooked it! Story: The shovel digression reminded me. I have a hammer. I'm not sure exactly where I got the hammer but I had it in college. It might have been a freebie that my father handed off to me. I got all kinds of weird things that way. I still have it. It hammers things. It has a good claw. I can lift it. All's good. But one day, my father was at my house helping me with something and asked for a hammer, so I handed him my hammer. He looked at it with great disdain and a little puzzlement. "That's not a hammer," he said. Um...it's a better hammer than those flowery girly ones, but whatev. So he went to his truck and got a "real hammer" (not bigger nor heavier, surely better balanced, separate head and wooden handle, whereas mine is all in one, probably some kind of pot metal with a chrome finish and rubbery grip, but I don't know what made it so much more real. I think you have to be better at driving nails than I to know). After he finished the job, he tried to give his hammer to me, though I wouldn't let him. It was his favorite hammer. He'd had it since long before I was born. What greater expression of love is there than a man who wants to give you his favorite hammer when you don't even know why it's better than the one you have?

Librarian-gardner - what is that plant? Not familiar with it... I went to Trader Joe's a couple -3? weeks ago and right at the front door they had these gorgeous Hellebores in pots! 10 bucks! 6" pots, 12" high plants - phenomenal! I got 3 - all different - I have a couple of kinds in the ground, but i might keep these in pots to put by my front door in prime real estate when they bloom next winter. They are very moody looking... I don't have any roses blooming at the moment - pruning them all now - but the pictures you folks are showing are gorgeous! Happy Valentine's Day!

Thanks, Randy. LV is one of my most favorite roses - it really loves our climate and our garden. When we moved in here in 1989, there was a HUGE bush of it (8 ft high, by 15 feet wide) in the front garden. It took us years to find out who it was. It turned out, years later, to be two bushes, as it had tip rooted. Those old ones are gone now, but I have 2 bushes which are rooted cuttings of the old ones, and I love, love them. Here is one when it was about 3-4 years old - only half the size it would get to eventually. Jackie

I bought a really nice card for DH and will cook him his favorite meal, beef stroganoff and scalloped potatos. Last year we tried to do the whole nice dinner thing and we ended up at McDonald's because we didn't make reservations.

I don't want dinner!!! I don't want roses or candy. I've already bought some wine, incense, wonderful smelling body oil. We're married - I'm going to get my money's worth out of this marriage license!!! Ordered some satin sheets - hope they get here on time or we'll have to do it all over again next week when they arrive!!!

With the help of some posters on the Recipe Exchange, I'm going to (try to) surprise DH with a copy of a dinner we had on vacation one year that we both really enjoyed.

i always get my wife a nice card, this seems very important to her. beyond that we dont do anything.

Rosie i love your post. I feel the same way. I think I will surprise with a candle light home cooked dinner, some roses and some sexy lingere, its on after that.
