urinary tract infections updates
Comments (6)Glad you found something that works! I'm going to CVS tomorrow & will see if they have them & get mom some. She hasn't had a problem since she left rehab but she still has to go often so it might help that! Maybe it is irritation & can heal it up. Hope you have a great checkup at Mayo! Mom has been cancer free for several years now except CLL which isn't causing a problem but has to be checked every 3 mos. Thanks for the update! Jan...See MoreUrinary Tract Infection ?
Comments (23)cheerful1: I am not a medical professional, but have been involved with multiple UTIs that a family member has had. As others have mentioned, don't mess with a UTI. You need to leave a urine sample and allow the lab to culture it for a couple of days. Also, specific antibiotics are prescribed for specific culture bacteria, so your doctor should (note, should) await the test results before prescribing an antibiotic, although he might start you on a more "common" antibiotic while awaiting the test results. After the antibiotics are finished (some are taken for 3 days, others two weeks, etc.), the surest thing is for a follow-up urine test. That's the only way to know for sure that it has cleared up. Just because one feels better is no guarantee. Our family member did not have a follow-up test last year. Sure enough, the antibiotic did not completely deal with the bacteria and urosepsis developed. Basically, the bacteria got into her blood stream and then got circulated throughout her body and through all organs. If urosepsis is left untreated, the patient can die. Our family member was hospitalized for two weeks, followed by another month in a rehab center. This is not to scare you or anyone, but what might be a "simple UTI" can mushroom into something deadly if not treated properly and thoroughly. I'd like to say "good luck", but somehow "luck" is just not appropriate for this discussion....See MoreUrinary Tract Infections
Comments (13)Laurie, Thanks for your suggestions, but I will not switch to canned food. I've seen what it does to teeth. I do brush my dog's teeth frequently, and I give her hard bones to chew on...but I am just not into canned food. I will find other ways to prevent the UTI's. Also, she drinks tons of water as it is. Thanks for your input though. Cynthia, Yes, same dog. That's what my vet said...he said it may be from the neuro issues. I couldn't see why, but the truth is that it's gotten worse since she had the spinal meningioma. She does see a neurologist, and had an MRI 6 weeks ago which showed scar tissue in the area where the tumor was removed (and also radiation was done). Her current neurologist (and also a top neurologist in my state that did the initial surgery) both say that surgery to free up the scar tissue is way too dangerous and probably won't fix the situation, since scar tissue is WAY too difficult to remove...and the surgery could likely end up in paralysis. She also has bad reactions to steroid treatment. So there is nothing I can do "medically". However, she goes to a chiropractor weekly (I know, I thought it was crazy too...in the beginning - but I had to find other ways to help her), and since she has started going she is able to JUMP into my SUV (couldn't do that for 3 years...which was when this all started) and she also immediately stopped having BM accidents (which was a result of the decline in anal tone). So the chiropractor visits are helping. She's also taking a holistic anti-inflammatory pill daily. I started putting water in her food last night as per Laurie's suggestion, and I will continue to do that indefinitely (I hear what you are saying about not letting it soak...I also don't want to do that because that will defeat the purpose of giving dry food for her teeth). And I will go get some cranberry capsules today. Thank you so much for your suggestions - I really appreciate it. Gabi...See MoreUrinary blockage...so frustrated
Comments (40)My kitty has had obstruction problems as well. First doctor recommended the prescriptions diet as well as the be-all, end-all, as in "noting else will work." Cat didn't like the (crappy) food; he was back to the practice within 2 mos. Happily, there was a "relief" vet there covering for the bully who owned the place. He recommended extra fluids with his regular food (raw), SPRING water (distilled pulls needed minerals from the body; the minerals in spring water are NOT what cause the blockage) AND, prophylactic use of sub-q fluids, tapering down to prn. It had been more than 18 mos now and all has been well until my prescription for sub-q fluids rand out. Can't seem to find another vet who uses that philosophy and can't find the "relief" vet. I am getting worried. We're going to 6+ weeks since his last sub-q fluid administration (125ml/day for 8 days at beg of each month). Anybody know how to track down a "relief" vet in the central Florida area? Thx....See Moreoztrade_pacific
