I bought this used set from my local re-sale shop and have been working on it. Here's my progress so far.

That's what it looks like after I removed all the old "stuff".

One inch foam about 1/2 inch larger than seat; batting larger than that.

Nice. That fabric would look perfect with my new area rug. Where'd you get it?

sinfonian: how much land do you have? 5 acres.. Is that valley yours, yes....The top of the hill in the picture is about 1/2 way on the lot.. This is a Google Sketch-up that I did of the property using the survey as the base.. or is that what is going to be developed? - Click on picture and I have marked what he wants to develop. The lots would have a nice ocean view but you can see the buildings on the lot that would make putting in a road difficult. Is your garden close to your house? No.. I have 3 ways to go from home in Paradise to the garden... 1)4 lane divided highway it is 40 km (25 mins). 2)By pass Highway and Local = 36 km (30 mins) 3)The very scenic and slow local road = 32 km (35 mins) And a picture of some Swiss Chard in the garden yesterday! I went out to the local organic farm today and was able to buy some Latah Tomato seeds. These are being very grown successfully here with our short season. So maybe next year I will actually be able to grow red tomatoes.. We have just had 2 beautiful days of weather after the hail last week! Congratulations on a drop-dead, gorgeously done dining room! I agree with the rest here that if you lower and center the chandelier, add a one or two buffet lamps and a new centerpiece to the table, it could pass as a "Candace room". I love what you've done with the drapes! The table centerpiece is very nice, but it mimics the lines of the arrangement on your buffet too closely. That one is stunning, BTW . . . don't change it, please! But, a large, low, well-done table arrangement would be perfect. Look for something that's at least twice the diameter of the one you have now. Jan mentioned a large green bowl filled with dark pebbles and a pillar candle. I have one very similar to that on my family room coffee table that I made a few years ago. I found the bowl, the black river rocks (polished, smooth and approx 1-1.5" each), candle and faux succulent, etc. all at HL. I'm not suggesting this exact one for your table (the extra branching greenery wouldn't work for yours, I can see that already), but it may give you a jump-off point for making one that works for you. The hutch looks great in your home! I bet you will have a lot of fun filling it. That will be another way to bring color/pattern to the room. I think anele meant she'd rather not see painted saddle stools at the island, not that she'd rather not see an island in the kitchen. I agree. I'd rather see the black saddle stools at the island. It sounds like the chairs you found at a local store would be a nice addition to your dining room. I like your idea of the painted chairs, dark table and upholstered chairs at each end of the table.

Wow, thanks for all the kind words! We tried to get some sort of reaction out of our kids and the workers but no one was saying much ;-) I should have known I could count on gardenweb! linb007, the floors are common 1 and 2 random width (3-5-7) american black walnut. I fell in love with some I saw at 32 dollars a sq foot (of course) and hunted them like prey until I found them for less than a quarter of that. We got them from Blackford & Sons out of Tennessee, unfinished with hand scrapped edges. My contact there is Luke Blackford. They are sweethearts there. I can send you his email if you want. kitchenkrazed, I am going to post this seperately (cabinet issue), I need the GW advice! The firm is a very reputable firm, HOWEVER, our designer left a week before we placed the order. So we are in a sort of odd situation and they never gave us a list of exact cabinets (I wasnt liking that but that is how they said it worked), they gave us 100 drawings and elevations and the cabinet type and finish, etc. but not a detailed BOM. So we are discussing it with them right now but I dont like that I dont have my original designer to clearly state that this is not what we discussed. honorbilkit, yes, we are surprised to find out that we are doing ok without the first floor. Esp since we always say the house is too small for us (we love our neighborhood though). My 6 year old said today he doesnt want to move back into the first floor. I thought he liked the closeness of all of us. Turns out he liked being able to watch TV while eating (basement set up, not allowed in real life upstairs). Rascal. Dinalo, yes that is stenciling, or as we like to say: entertainment for the onsite crew. Its one of my "Projects" where i experiment and stress out my husband. We had rich blue walls (faux sky) before so to cover it, I laid a TON of primer and ceiling white, and I COULD STILL SEE THE BLUE! So then I lugged 50 lbs of joint compound in (this is where the workers perked up wondering what the heck I was up to) and slathered it on. Then I color washed it with acrylics. Then I did a dimensional damask stencil with some of the bottom metallic paint mixed in. Since this photo I have added metallic highlighting to match under chair rail and then started distressed it with sandpaper (not done) b/c my highlighting was too "new" looking. Its like an 18 layer wall. I think I need to be committed if I make any starts towards 19. It's been sort of fun, Ive been cranking the ipod and putting movies on for the kids, but I think most people could skip 80% of my steps and get a similar effect! Lol.

That looks great. Could you do this with an upholstered chair? I have an old one I'd love to work on but know nothing about upholstering. Could I put foam on top of the old stuffing?

Anyway, yours looks like a million dollars.

I love that chair. The last pic is so "Ta-da!" What a great job. It looks so nice. What stain did you use?

Excellent, and you did pay meticulous attention the the pattern, Well Done!
May I share for others that may want to try, There is Foam and then there is Quality Foam. I learned about this when redoing our motorhome. You can use hobby foam if comfort is not important or if you want long lasting comfort, go to a foam store and feel the difference. They will also very neatly cut it to size with professional machinery. This is so helpful if you need shart straight crisp cuts. All that I bought years ago for hard use is still supportively comfortable. It was worth every dollar to invest in great quality foam and do it right once.
What brand product did you use on your wood, your results are fabulous! Those chairs are truely ReBorn! Love the mantle tops!

That is gorgeous! Great photos. I could almost do this from following the photos alone. Did you have to refinish the wood before you started?

Great job! And I love that fabric! Is the fabric print gray or brown? I'm asking because I saw a beautiful Robert Allen fabric today in gray that would be gorgeous made up in window treatments for a dining room.

Thanks everyone for your kinds words. I bought the fabric from Jo Ann's (50 percent off). It's from Christopher Lowell's line. Here is a better picture with the colors showing more "true".

I used a minwax gel stain in dark walnut. I also had to fill some gouges first. When I was done I used Formby's tung oil to make it shine. I will show more pieces of the set when I can get my DH & son to put them in the DR. Then I'll need help with drapes & paint, if you all would be so kind.

bodica gave some good info. Foam can be purchased in different densities and thicknesses. gracie, you did a wonderful job.

Thanks Bodica for the foam info. These chairs won't be used often, but if I need foam for my LR chairs I'll check out an uphostery shop.
