Slow cooker use in canning
Comments (5)The oven is even easier and you can do larger batches in a roasting pan. I use this method for apple butter, tomato sauce, etc. I don't think there's any safety issues using the crockpot, but you'll end up with "stuff" stuck to the sides if you let it go all night without stirring. Mine cooks too hot even on the lowest setting to use it this way. Yours may be fine! You could do it during the day when you can keep an eye on it, stirring every so often and see how it works. You could cook down one day, then heat it back up to can the next. I know several here have used a crockpot to carmelize onions with good results. I did it once, but didn't enjoy the smell in the house for days afterward. Just me. Functionally, it worked great though! I did do it while I was awake to monitor. Comments (15)The brands we get the most complaints/returns on are the Hamilton Beach slow cookers. The customers say they don't hold a temperature and break down after a few months use. Same way with their hand mixers, poor quality. I wouldn't buy HB items. The quality isn't there. I purchased a new Cusinart programmable slow cooker a few months ago. Have used it 4 times. So far so good. Everything has come out well. It has the SS outside, Black ceramic insert with a meat rack inside. It is the 6.5 quart size. That seems to do best for our family of 4. I also have 2 Rival Crock pots that I received as wedding gifts 30 years ago. They are still going strong and don't show any signs of breaking down. They are stained on the outside and the lids are a bit scratched but I won't give them up for any amount of money. They have lasted so long they are like family! lol NancyLouise...See MoreWould you buy this used rice cooker?
Comments (38)I am Asian.. So rice gets made almost everyday. We cook a variety of different rice, basmati, brown, Thai red, indian short grain etc. I used to cook in the pressure cooker like my mom for years but I bought a zojirushi 15yrs ago and never looked back. I now have a smaller 3 cup unit and it makes perfect rice. The fuzzy logic or whatever works. The cleanup is a cinch with the non-stick. The GABA rice setting is great for Thai red rice (our current favorite). I also use it for soft biryanis, pilafs, quinoa etc. I love the timer feature on Zoji - set it up in the morning and it is ready by dinner. A side of dal in the mini slow cooker and dinner is done . The rice cooker is really good in getting the exact consistency I want- harder for stir fried rice, softer for other dishes etc....See MoreSlow cooking while you sleep
Comments (16)I've also made oatmeal overnight and a couple of breakfast casseroles without a second thought. I've had a couple of house fires and won't even use the fireplace, but I use that crockpot without fear for some reason. Right now I'm at work, but I have a pot of beans at home that's been cooking since 8 a.m., they'll be ready tonight for supper. I figure the risk is minimal or the company would have been sued so many times they'd be out of business. Sure, it might catch fire. And then again, I might get hit by a truck stepping off the curb, but I still walk to work everyday. Anything can happen but in the grand scheme of things my crockpot is one of the least of my concerns. Annie...See MoreBumblebeez SC Zone 7
