Comments (62)unless you're willing to spend $4,000 and above it's very hard to get a really nice piece. most are not made well and it won't last. This is what I do I'm a designer an objective of mine is to find a used sofa buy a good manufacturer hand tied made in USA. Then I pick a fabric and have it reupholstered this way you will have a really good sofa for a long long time. Every piece of furniture I have has been reupholstered. I know this pretty gross to some people but I'm telling you it's very much worth your while. Also many manufacturers do not have good fabrics and by the time you pick the fabric you like it's going to cost you another thousand dollars or more. and their selection is pretty sparse. I bought my Fabrics online from anatol's Fabrics in Ohio online. They send you samples and you get the upholsterer to give you an estimate on how much you need....See MoreUpholstery
Comments (8)i have a pneumatic stapler and a compressor. it wasn't much more than the nicer electric stapler previously listed here and makes it so much easier and less labor intensive. i have the porter-cable Porter-Cable US58 1/4-Inch to 5/8-Inch 22-Gauge C-Crown Upholstery Stapler and a small kobalt compressor from lowes. maybe about $180 combined. i'm a terrible sewer, but family helps me out with that part when needed. if you're just looking to cover the seat part of a dining chair that screws into the frame you don't have to sew at all for that! there should be 4 screws holding the seat onto the frame. take those off and your seat comes loose. you can remove the fabric that's there, or leave it on if it's not yucky, and if your new fabric isn't lighter where the old one would show through. then you just flip the seat upside down on your fabric, cut so that you have an inch or two excess around all the edges and pull tight as you staple. it really doesn't get any easier upholstery-wise than a dining chair. i think it's a great first project. i'm just a hobbyist and still just starting out, but i've learned everything i know from the time others have taken to blog tutorials. youtube is also helpful....See MoreWhite slipcover-Need help finding fabric to cover dark upholstery
Comments (1)Where are you getting it slipcovered? When I got a quote on getting my chairs slipcovered I had the same problem but the upholsterer had many different weights and types of fabrics available to order. Does your upholsterer not have access or are you using a private person? The problem with using something underneath is that with a white cover you will likely be washing it fairly often and it will be a pain to arrange an underlayer each time. Maybe you could staple the underlayer on?...See MoreHas anybody had success washing Sunbrella cushion covers?
Comments (12)Oxy can cause fading...however if you soak in oxy using cool water for a shorter period of time it shouldn't fade.....Sunbrella is a nylon outdoor fabric isn't it?....I would soak it it a tub or other large container using coolish water and a good TOL detergent, like Tide powder and let the enzyme cocktail have a go at it awhile...change out the water a couple times a day. This fabric is the real dickins to clean. When you dry it hang it in the shade. Lizzie gives great advice about the STPP use it along with the detergent if you have it....See Morelkplatow
