Looking good. I think uppers above those corner cabinets could be nice...So could shelves or a piece of artwork...All depends on which you prefer.

I think I'd like the dw on the other side of the sink. The cabinet above will hold a lot of things and the dishes could maybe go across in the island? Although, maybe you'd get used to it and it could be handy to have the dishwasher right next to you as you cook...Not so great if someone has it open when you need to drain a pot in the sink, though. So I'm still voting to move it to the right of the sink.

This may be a dumb question, but my dh makes our cabinets and he gets nervous if I plan drawers too large or shelves too wide...Will the 36" drawer and glides be strong enough for something as heavy as stacked dishes can be? I guess a lot of people must have them that wide? My dishes are in drawers in 23" cabinets and I can feel that there is a lot of weight in them. Much more than in my 36" pots and pans drawers.

I don't mind the dishwasher where it is. It may be a bit of a PITA when you have the oven door open but everything in life is a compromise. It is not in any sight line so the two appliances together are not going to create any visual inconsistency.

You could easily move it into the island though, directly across from the sink. I would probably do that.

The bottom right corner looks like a great place to just go crazy with trim and create the most beautiful pantry ever. I agree that your base cupboards are going to look a bit orphaned there. The counters are a bit out of the work area, so I am not sure how useful they're going to be.

It would be great to create a huge pantry cupboard there with a whole room's worth of detailing plastered on to one floor to ceiling cabinet. Nothing exceeds like excess ya know ;) It is in a traffic heavy spot so it's going to get seen a lot.

I think you're going to end up with a beautiful room that people like to spend time in. :)

The problem is that the dishwasher door effectively blocks access to the cabinets in the island. The drawn aisle is still just 33" before countertops.

The other aisle width conflict will be at the range and trying to access the oven contents without getting speared in an inconvenient location. The part of the aisle in front of the range has less than 30" of clearance.

You might consider moving the island an entire foot towards the washing machine side.

Thanks for your responses. It helps to know that there isn't anything, besides the aisle conflict, that I'm missing. It also helps that this is really close to the current layout (the only change to our current layout is the size of the island) so I can literally see the space.

I am thinking the DW needs to be paneled no matter where it is b/c next to the range is too much SS, and on the other side of the sink it's the first thing you see when you walk in the kitchen.

I am back and forth about the cabinets in the corner. I love the idea of a big pantry from a storage perspective, but this is also the walk through into the FR and I'm worried the space will be too filled with cabinetry. I'm actually thinking of skipping all cabinetry and just keeping our sideboard there. It's shallower but will still give space to put out drinks when entertaining. I hate to give up the additional storage, but my 'Sweeby Test' was all about creating a warm and open kitchen. Maybe we can skip it for now and do it later if we change our minds. (Can you tell I'm having a hard time making a decision?!?)

Rhome - great point about the size of the drawers. I was so giddy about large drawers I forgot to account for the weight of the plates! (Although after this remodel we may be eating off plastic plates!) Maybe I could making the upper cabinet next to the table come down to the counter and store the plates/glasses in there, maybe with a glass front? That would be near the DW and the table.

Any thoughts on the location of the range? Should it be centered between the sink/corner, or more to the left so there is more counterspace to the right (I'm a righty)?

Any thoughts on the trim of the fridge. I haven't seen many pictures of paneled fridges with little/no trim at the end of a cabinet. Is that because it looks bad?!?

I would probably move the stove to the left, next to the corner cab/lazy susan to give more room between it and the sink.

Maybe write a post asking to see paneled fridges on ends of runs?

I don't like the DW by the stove because I like being able to store cooking stuff on both sides of the stove in upper drawers.

You may be able to skip the corner cabs and use the sideboard...and if you need more space, add the cabinets as a second job.

I second the suggestion that you move the DW to the other side of the sink. Right now, if someone is loading/unloading the DW the person at the range is trapped in the corner and cannot get to the sink, the work area b/w the sink & range, or the work area on the island (other than the one short end) w/o going all the way around the island. If there were a prep sink on the refrigerator(?) wall, it might not be a problem.

In your kitchen, with only one sink & where it's located, the primary prep areas are going to be b/w the range & sink and the island. Both will be blocked by the DW.

Ideally, I would move the DW to the other side, leaving the sink where it is, add a 12" pullout; then, move the range down toward the corner and have a 36" work area b/w the sink & range.

Just re-read the OP...you can still store your dishes in a 36" cabinet to the left of the sink or in the island.

Yes....either put in upper cabinets or use tall cabinets in the bottom right. What is it? A Message Center? Maybe something like Sweeby's "Organization Closet"?

Ugh! I just came from the KD's and he is strongly suggesting that we move the fridge to the W/D (the layout I posted last week.) He insists that it would look better because it opens up the space. I think he's right - but it doesn't WORK well. Siiigh. Am I wrong to think that the layout posted above will work and look nice?

My "gut" reaction is that the refrigerator will be too far away and that the island will be a "barrier island" for the sink.

It also violates one of the guidelines of the NKBA (not that I wouldn't consider violating a guideline for more functionality). No work triangle leg intersects an island/peninsula or other obstacle by more than 12".

Where would you then put the washer & dryer?

There are several proposed places for the W/D, but none are great, and they all cost more $$$. The options we've discussed are:
1. Stack the W/D in the corner (where the dryer is now.) That doesn't leave any room in that closet for detergents or wet/dirty clothes before/after they are washed. The detergents would need to go in the end cabinets in the kitchen.
2. Stack the W/D where the 2 small lower cabinets are with a closet built around the W/D - with a little space for storage and sorting/hanging. This is an issue as it really protrudes into the walkway into the FR, closing off the two rooms.
3. Rework the PR (behind those 2 bottom cabinets) and recess the W/D into part if the PR space. The new closet around the W/D would take up the same foot print as the two small cabinets shown on the plan above, but involves moving a load baring wall and making the PR smaller.
4. Put the W/D in a new closet in the corner of the FR, around the corner from the two small cabinets mentioned above. There is space there, but the reworked space would be oddly shaped and it seems like an odd place for a W/D.
5. Bump out the kitchen 4' which would make room for the W/D next to the PR. Ummm...$$$$$.

There is no room for a W/D upstairs. The basement is already finished and there really isn't space down there either.

The KD said they do this type of layout a lot in the houses in this area. I have several friends who have moved the W/D to the basement and put the fridge in that space and they are fine with the layout. Moving the fridge next to a stacked W/D would make the kitchen look bigger, which I love. But spending more $ to move the appliances, and potentially making it more difficult to do laundry and get to the fridge scares really makes me nervous.

I am second guessing everything at this point and feel like neither option is great and this is a huge waste of money. Maybe it will be better after a glass of wine and a good night sleep.
